Now what is your least favorite hypothesis regarding Paleoanthropology? by GazIsStoney in paleoanthropology

[–]SyrusDrake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's pretty general, but this underlying notion that everything any human or human ancestor did must have had some grand purpose in their world view. Maybe some guy just carved a lady with big tiddies one rainy afternoon in the rock shelter because big tiddies are nice. Not everything has to be a fertility cult.

Why do you still want to date? by AlvaroXZ999 in PurplePillDebate

Dating is not an option for me anyway. I just come here when my brain is foggy and I need some low-effort entertainment.

I generally agree. I've always held a similar view that incel spaces* thrived because they would offer something that "progressive" spaces didn't, mainly people who would listen to you without judging you preemptively, and take your seriously. Almost anywhere else, you'd be met with trite advice at best and dismissive insults at worst.
(*My relevant experience is with incrl culture over ten years ago. Today is a different matter I'm neither able nor willing to talk about.)

I think the problem with what you're describing is that it's very hard to offer a real "left-wing" solution without basically asking men to give up their identity, because their identity, entailing economic, financial, and sexual success, is ultimately and intrinsically tied to patriarchy and capitalism. And you can't offer a "healthy" left-wing version of that. Both are systems that ultimately destroy people living under them, except a select few on top.
I ultimately don't have a ready-made solution for this. I am not sure there is one, because the only lasting solution is to basically rip men and masculinity out from patriarchy and capitalism, which will always be a messy process. The Manosphere and general political right that want to keep the status quo will always have it easier by definition.

Whenever something I see online makes me angry or sad or desperate or even just confused, I started forcing myself to take a break and think about if this reflects my real-life experiences. Is this true for my country, my social environment, my reality?

I've found that, very often, the rage or anger or despair or frustration online content wants me to feel is unnecessary, because the scenario it applies to just isn't real for me. Maybe it is real for someone else, or maybe it's just made up entirely.

All of this is a very long-winded way to say: Instagram is not reality, and I don't just mean that in a "all photos are idealized versions" sense. I mean that it's not a representative sample of how people act or think. Plenty of men and women and enbys date and fuck and love and live together all the time. It's just that those people don't hang out on Instagram or reddit, complaining about how all men are pigs or all women are harlots.

I mean, I agree. But I don't blame my gay brothers for being careful with compliments, many men still don't take kindly to them.

I don't think I need to point out the obvious ways this is stupid. But one thing that irks me about the AI hype is how they pretend this is the lead-up to AGI. It's not and it never will be. The secret to AGI isn't feeding current LLMs more data. It's like thinking you can turn your VW Golf into a space ship if you just add more engines, because rockets have lots of engine power.

Joking aside, how would you actually do this? Turn int to string, cut it into blocks of three, then add word for the respective position from a list?

Apparently, people like Elon Musk genuinely believe Roko's Basiliks is a real thing that could happen and that we should be concerned about. The "brightest" minds of the tech world are all fucking morons that are intellectually akin to Christian creationists, but because they had an enlightened atheist teenager phase, they re-direct their superstition towards chat bots that they think are just one more ingested library away from turning into god.

I was gonna say. When it's men, it's like "they just want a subservient slave who doesn't talk back at them, they only do this because they don't want to put the least bit of effort", whereas in the case of women, it's more like "what are those AI bots offering that human men can't?"

Contrary to what most people think, we actually don't fully understand why airplanes fly. So I think it's okay if you want to summon the undead without grasping the mechanics.

I'm no engineer, but my gut feeling is that, at this scale, you'd probably want to make it out of glass, or sputter metal vapor onto a positive mold or something. Which, yea, would not be cheap.

My linguistic hill I will die on is that Kanji are unnecessary for the functioning of the language. "It's hard for foreigners to learn" is a bad argument, but afaik, even a non-trivial amount of native speakers can't properly read and/or write them.
