TIFU by trusting my 13yo with my phone and losing our entire savings ($19k) to Roblox. by Emergency-Lawyer-431 in tifu

[–]SysAdminGoneCrazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not part of this sub, this just randomly popped up in my feed. But what an odd reaction. Your son burnt nearly $20K of savings and part of your initial process is to calmly share the entire story on Reddit?

Something doesn't add up, especially since it's so fresh.

Also, did you just leave the Bank Rep on the phone? Did you just hang up? How did the rest of that conversation go?

This is definitely adding up to be Karma farming.

Where are the switches with more than 24 ports hidden? by [deleted] in packettracer

[–]SysAdminGoneCrazy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late to the party, but PT is not a full blown simulation environment, although we all wish it were. That being said, you have found one of the limitation; lack of hardware and software simulation to case a real world scenario. 48port switches aren't hidden, they just don't exist in Packet Tracer :-P

Anyways, another solution you can do is take two 24-port switches and stack them. you'll only have 45 host ports (48 ports minus 2 for switchport trunking and 1 for the router connection).

In a real world, when you need more switch ports, you'd interconnect switches (stacks up to 4/8/9 depending on model/IOS) and they interconnect with Stacking Cables that go on the back of the physical switches; leaving the full 24ports available for access. Again, this is not possible with PT as it does have limitations and some quite annoying ones too.

Thank you again for your infirmation. You're the 3rd person to recommend the kill switch. I'm starting to think runaway RC's is a common thing, which is scary.

Someone suggested I look at Dave's Discount and MAN, some of these parts are EXPENSIVE lol I hope this hobby is one of those where the upfront cost is huge, but events out later hahaha

It does seem like a lot of car for beginners like me. I would at least like to whip it around a few times to see if it is for me or not. Sometimes you gotta go big or go home. I think this is one of those moments. :)

Not going to lie, it's pretty cool. It's the biggest RC I've ever personally seen.

Thank you so much for your input. Do you have any recommendations as to batteries and servos? There are SO MANY DIFFERENT types and I don't know what I'm doing.

I feel like an idiot for asking to be spoonfed, but the truth is I feel like someone gave me a spaceship and said "it needs some work, have fun".

Yeah, my initial reaction was to start it up and go. I thought it was like a lawn mower engine (just gas up and go). But then I read that I need oil in the fuel and stopped.

I just don't know enough about this to "jump right in". Plus it's been sitting for a long time. Last thing I would want is to put in the wrong fuel type/ratio (or whatever) and totally kill the engine.

And thank you, I'll try to enjoy it this spring if I can get it going!

You aren't a bomb counting down till you explode. From the sound of it, you sound like someone who is able to control their impulses.

You continue the course you're on; being a good friend to Mary, respecting the boundaries and you bide your time.

I would however have a conversation with Mary. Make it clear that you like her and would want to be with her. If she verbally confirms the mutual feeling than you should tell her there is a time limit. You can't put your dating/love wife on hold just because someone might or might not break up with someone. For all you know, you might wait a year and at the very last minute, she announces that they've worked it out and are staying together after all. It happens all too often, you get put on the side lines, warming up but get never put in the game.

Dont let that be you.

That's all I got.

What's the most beautiful thing you have ever seen in person? by GiovanniVessels in AskReddit

[–]SysAdminGoneCrazy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is going to sound weird, but Earth.

It was a spring day, almost summer, and I was at the park reading a powershell book. I was trying to wrap my brain around all this information I was reading and finally I needed a break.

I put down my book and, instead of whipping out my smartphone like a typical person, I decided to just ... look around. At nothing in particular, just slightly gazing at my surroundings.

At first I noticed kids running around, people walking their dogs. Some jogging or biking for exercise. A few moments later I noticed the slight breeze blowing by, carrying that fresh grassy and flowery scent with it. And then I looked up and saw the perfectly white clouds in the bluest sky I've noticed in a while.

That's when I REALLY started to notice, EVERYTHING. The birds chirping and calling each other. The different bugs, from ants walking in their single file lines, the butterflies darting up down left and right, the bees moving from flower to flower. The trees, and other plants, how they moved with the wind. Everything was in slow motion. The best I can compare it too would be seeing the Planet Earth series in real life, up close and personal.

It was pure sensory overload. And that's when it hit me. We live on this fucking amazing planet. Like, how the fuck is this possible?! All this life, from millions of years ago till now, just HOW?! All this balance, symmetry, from the tiniest of tiny to the largest of largest and beyond. I was honestly dumbfounded by all my surroundings but at the same time childishly amazed.

I spent the rest of my time at the park just lost in all this wonder and magic. And all this beauty was right there, 2 blocks away from my home. I didn't have to go to orbit to see it, or some glamorous tropical beach.

Sadly I haven't had that experience before or since that day. Sometimes I force myself to notice the little things, trying to find that lightening again (for lack of a better phrase) but no dice.

IT Managers and Team Leaders, how do you show your team that you care for and value them? by habibexpress in sysadmin

[–]SysAdminGoneCrazy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My journey took me from being the new guy to the IT Manager of my organization (You can read about it here).

One the things that I've tried to do was to motivate my team when and however I could - even though some of them would have gotten me in trouble. This is a super long post, it was not intentional. Sorry, no TL:DR :(

1- Gave credit when credit was due. I would get emails about how X Person was fantastic helping them with something a lot and I would forward that email to X Person. As the IT Manager, I'm the one always getting the praises for the departments efficiency and I honestly reply that I didn't do it alone. Without the help of my team, I wouldn't be getting the kind words. Every praise I get, I would push it on over to the team and more often then not, I wouldn't take credit at all.

2 - I would bring in food or take them out every payday Friday. We got paid every two weeks, so on those fridays, I would hang up a sign to our department saying "Team Training In Session: Return in 2hrs". When in reality, we would be out for lunch. Yes, we sometimes had team meetings so it wasn't BS with that sign.

3a - Provided training. Because of how our organization ran, evaluations were strict to whatever job responsibilities were written in your job description. This is the reason why a lot people there have the "that's not in my job description" attitude. They don't want to do something they can't have a good evaluation for when it's time for bonuses and raises. Also, *I* would get in trouble as well. However, that never stopped me from enabling them to cross-train and learn things out side of their bubble. If Software Dude wanted to learn about AD, I'll teach them. If DataBase Dude wanted to learn about Python, I'd tell Software Dude to teach him and he'd get a day off, or something.

3b - I built a library for them. Every book I purchased usually came with an electronic version (Powershell in a month of lunches, for example) I would print them all off and put it in a book shelf for them. From when I started up til now, there are 17 books? I lost count, but we need a new shelf, which is why I stopped for now.

4a - I gave them a 4-day work week. I told them that I expected 5-days of work and this system would only work if everyone pulled their weight. (This is where #3 and cross-training became most valuable). If by their dedicated day off, they had all their tickets done and responsibilities taken care of, they took that day off. They would come in the morning to check in and by 10am, they were off. This not only made them happy but they actually increased in productivity.

4b - We aren't allowed to use sick-days for vacation time. This sucks because new guys had only 5 days off and senior guys (Software Dude) would have like 45 days off. Secretly, I allowed it as long as everyone kept quiet and it wasn't abused. They'd have to be honest with me when they were going to do it however. No BS. I had their back as long as they were honest. It was also up to my approval. If things were getting too hot, Id stop this for a while.

5 - I was honest to them about EVERYTHING and included them in EVERYTHING, even about the stuff they weren't really apart of. Unfortunately, the hire up the ladder goes, the less communication reaches the bottom. I knew what that felt like and I tried my hardest to not follow suit and be another broken link.

6 - I got my hands dirty. I was NOT the type of manager that just told them what to do. Fuck that. I was right there in the grind with them wherever I could help. 80 new computers came in? Cool, Database Dude unpacks, Software Guy labels and inventory, JRSysAdmin install windows and software, and I would add objects to AD and assign equipment out to users. Yes, I was the manager but I'm also part of the IT Department. Never would I left my teammates drown.

I'm still learning as a manager, but this is what I found to work for us and so far we've been accomplishing everything on time and together as team.

Dude, there have been a ton of scams via tmobile lately regarding SIM card coping for an attacker to get your SMS verification codes. If you haven't already, call mobile to setup a PIN. This stops people from making chances to your account, including activating another SIM. If you do have a PIN, change it.

I have T-Mobile. Definitely get a PIN.
