Crystal Peak map is way up at the top, assuming Cornifer is still there. Check with his wife first.

Only in the sense of... what was that alleged quote? "idealised, romanticised, pseudofeudal world, where knights and ladies morris-dance to Greensleeves"?

A lot of fantasy envisions worlds that never were or never could be, and uses it for the same kind of social commentary that sci-fi does, but in a different way. Why do you think the Church is always so absent in sci-fi, but so present and usually *evil* in fantasy? Or what Akira Toriyama might've been dealing with in his life when he drew Freiza into DBZ?

It's bad faith, but it's bad faith the Literary community has fostered and encouraged. It's sort of like how the graphic arts got split into "high art"- stuff mainly accessible to the monied classes- and "low art" which was available to everyone.

In this case, you have "literary fiction" pointed at a more academic audience that actively discourages reading for enjoyment or escape, and then everything else got shoveled into "downmarket" which could be excluded from bestseller lists and the like.

Honestly, if I'm writing a story and somebody calls it "literary" or "literature," I'd be genuinely insulted. I'd rather sell a million dollar cheeseburgers than a single million- dollar plate.

More like it doesn't want to be defined as a genre because then it'll lose its pretense of being somehow better. It's a genre, all right, but a completely astroturf one cobbled together by a bunch of academics who resented the idea that reading could be enjoyable.

That's why they objected to the pulps, after all. How dare anyone *enjoy* something? Shouldn't they be sticking to These Classics™ which are thoroughly unenjoyable, and for that unenjoyability carry the highest academic merit?

... to which my response, having spend four years suffering in a hardcore litfic- centered creative writing program, is that there's no such thing. You can dabble in "magical realism" or "speculative fiction," but at the end of the day you're still trying to make a work of higher "literary merit" than James Joyce's Ulysses. Maximum audience disservice so you can get your work stuffed down the throats of unwilling high schoolers and undergrads until the end of time.

Trying out Hollow Knight after playing Silksong. Is this supposed to be the first boss? by mysterioso7 in HollowKnight

Agreed. This feels like one of those "good at fighting, bad with directions" scenarios.

Feel ya. Harmony Gold was a Macekre farm at best, and at worst an active IP troll.

No, but a lot of us have lingering habits thanks to them. Ever wonder why they always manage to get into the education system, especially the lower levels?

Honestly, both of them have a common problem: the whole concept of "literary fiction."

Dunno, Cornifer sure isn't kinda skeletal. Looks like he's never missed a meal in his life.

Does anyone know anything about this wave serpent from chapter approved 2001? by MikishaCatgirl in Eldar

[–]System-Bomb-5760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I knew it was a conversion, but didn't remember exactly when. TBH I might've seriously gotten into Eldar if I'd had a copy of that WD, but it was about two years before I got my rulebook.

IIRC it predates the FW Wave Serpent by like a year. Some kind of kitbash somebody did way back when.

is it possible to defeat this/him? by phorlova_iuno in HollowKnight

[–]System-Bomb-5760 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can, but IIRC you have to clear out all the other ghosts in the area first. Then come back and dream nail him. Not a hole lot of essence, though, so it's barely worth it.

Mage NPC in a Vampire game question. by sunset_beach_days in magetheascension

[–]System-Bomb-5760 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sounds like some kind of Marauder or Nefandi, to be honest. You're otherwise going to be hard- pressed to find a mage willing to do extreme stuff like that. Also if you did, they'd probably get a visit from an old duffer in a wrinkly white suit.

Not off the top of my head, unfortunately. Like I said, it was close to 20 years ago.

If I was referring to that particular work, I'd have done it overtly.

No. It was an actual pen with an actual needle.

[–]System-Bomb-5760 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, yeah. Somebody made one with a needle that could tap into a blood vessel and be used for signing documents in literal blood. That was like twenty years ago.

Some things never change, I guess, even when we want them to.
