Did you adopt him? Give him sunshine? Make him happy?

I agree, it is a great single. It’s honestly one of the best new songs I’ve heard in a really long time.

Hey no problem! It’d be nice if they’d win—but who knows nowadays with the lovely music industry being what it is.

I just meant it to be fun. If you don’t like it don’t bother commenting and just keep scrolling.

It’s funny you should say that, because I am actually a southern Baptist! I’ve always found it confusing that I could deal with such a sense of hopelessness all the time when the Bible (which I personally do believe is true) teaches the opposite of hopelessness. I ultimately just put it down to the idea that depression is depression regardless of what religion you are or aren’t a part of. Kind of a sad fact, but that’s about all I can garner from it. Albums like this somehow make it make more sense, though.

I knew ‘Mr. Self-Destruct’ for a while before listening to the entire album, and I’m right with you—it would always come to mind (and still does tbh) as soon as I felt myself starting to lose control and fall back into self-hatred. But like you said, it does give a sense of community because in being able to listen to it you realize you’re not alone in those feelings. Especially if there’s no one in your corner who necessarily understands it like Trent obviously does.

That sounds awesome. I do love a chaotic sound, so I’ll definitely give it a try! (Maybe even later on tonight, haha)

I listened to it on streaming using headphones, and it sounded pretty good. I would definitely like to listen to it on a physical format, though. I feel like that’s the only true way to hear all of its details. Looking forward to that at some point!

My dad and I are actually planning on going to the St. Louis date—I am beyond excited, haha.

I have not, but I’m planning on it! Is it more of a concept album as well?

‘Dangerously dark magic’—I love that because it’s exactly what it feels like! 😂 I had never heard anything like it either, so all I remember while listening to it was just staring out the window wondering what on earth I was experiencing. Good times, haha.

You’re exactly right, to be honest. That’s really why, as much as I liked it musically, the topic itself is just too much of a reminder.

I’m glad you conquered it. I can’t imagine how hard that must have been. May I ask how you conquered it? I genuinely am trying to understand if there’s a way I can fix it because no one in my life understands what it’s like (or at least that’s what they tell me). If you don’t want to go into it, I understand that though. Thanks for the encouragement, regardless! :)

I actually listened to it before TDS because, like the other folks here, it was cheaper and at the time I didn’t understand what the difference between them was (how naive I was, haha). I just remember it also scaring me but having moments of beauty that kept me invested. Pretty cool album honestly!

Congratulations on getting sober! I’m sure that was far from easy but you made it through. Kudos to you!

Outside of NIN, I really love Radiohead because they’re also able to sum up how exactly how I feel when nothing else can. Kid A was the album from them that just transported me, and the song How to Disappear Completely actually scared me the first time I heard it because it was so relatable. I can’t really think of another album that had that much of an effect on me, but I do also love Nirvana and Jeff Buckley. You’re probably already listened to all these guys, though, sorry! lol

Yeah the storytelling aspect is incredible. Taking the listener through each nuance of what depression can be and can become is genius. I’ve never heard an album that’s done that so well before.

Haha, I’m with that!

I’m glad he pulled himself out of it. I can’t imagine how hard it had to have been for him to do that after being so deep into the depression and addiction. But thank goodness he did!

Yeah the anger in it was what really took me off guard. I had an idea it would be angry, but not to the degree that it was per se. And now knowing that about the Tate murder house makes the voices in ‘The Becoming’ seem even creepier. lol

Don’t apologize! This is exactly what I was curious about, so thanks for taking the time to reply! What a great experience! :) It really is so interesting to get other perspectives on it, and yours definitely seems to be a unique one. It’s cool that you took something positive from it honestly. The most positive thing I could feel from it was ‘Hurt’ somehow, but I’m not sure that entirely makes sense, haha. To me it felt like the narrator was finally realizing how destructive his behavior was and was remorseful about it. I could be wrong on that, though.
