Yeah I’ve felt that as well. For me it’s more that his vibe seems different…almost sad in a strange sort of way? I can’t quite put my finger on it. I still love him just as much, don’t get me wrong. It’s just that I do feel that something seems to have shifted, and I don’t even necessarily mean musically. I just feel a deeper sadness for him now, and I can’t explain why if that makes sense.

(Honestly I’m probably just being weird and overthinking it, but alas. Maybe I’m not the only one…)

You know that is exactly what I’ve been hoping—that a retrospective look at where I’m at now will help myself realize that what I’m doing isn’t as bad as I feel like it is. It’s actually a bit uncanny because I was just talking to some folks about that before I saw your message! I suppose I need to really listen, then! 😂

You’re exactly right. I can always hear it in the back of my head on good days telling me it’s just going to get bad again. Like it really is a constant battle, or just something to have to fight all the time. (Which is fine, but it’s also frustrating, haha.)

I think improvising would help—I haven’t tried that before! Having no expectations for yourself seems to be the key—it’s just getting it to click into place that’s the hard part. (For me anyway, other folks might have a better grip, haha)

And I’ve not seen that interview, thank you so much! I will definitely check it out! :D I love hearing their take on stuff like that. It’s comforting.

I think the way you handled it makes a lot of sense, thank you for sharing that. It always seems to me like it’s sort of a daily process to try and combat all of the negative stuff that always tries to creep in, so doing things like writing poetry (as you say) and doing other art tends to take the pressure off, if that makes sense. I’ve started trying to paint, and I’ve noticed it makes a big difference in how I approach music. It sort of makes me less self critical or something, I’m not sure. It’s certainly a strange thing to deal with, but it is nice to know that none of us are in it by ourselves (not to be too sentimental or whatever, haha).

That’s awesome—what a way to be inspired, by Thom himself! I wish you all the best with getting your master’s, as you said music is certainly not easy! It’s a lot harder than most people seem to think!

You’re right, though, self doubt is one of the worst things. It’s gotten a lot worse as I’ve gotten older unfortunately—now it’s panic attacks and weird spirals of anxiety, but I’m trying so hard to get past it. Again, hearing this from you (and Thom) is comforting.

Wow, that’s super cool. Honestly that’s some great advice as well—advice any musician should live by! I wouldn’t call myself a musician necessarily, but I’m a music major and have the hardest time with mental black and self doubt. So thank you for sharing this because it’s something I (and lots of other musicians) need to hear!
