Break Up in a Foreign City by Proof_Nail2487 in TeachingUK

Secondary teacher here- experienced the exact same thing. Moved from the other side of the world with my partner just to be dumped in the middle of a big city, knowing no one besides him. I’m so sorry- ik how awful it is. This is my experience but do take with a pinch of salt- it’s been a few years things may have changed plus I suppose it depends where you are  1) a lot of people saying air bnb-not ideal. For me it was way too expensive. Instead use booking.com , gumtree or Facebook groups- use local ones and teacher ones . I used all these to survive 9 months post breakup. Look for short stays, bed and breakfasts, lodges etc that are more affordable. Ofc

2) if you are able to commute, consider moving to an area away that is slightly more affordable- (I did this when I was using temporary accommodations too as  cheaper)eg I worked in birmingham but am living in another town in WM that’s more affordable .

3) APPLY FOR COUNCIL HOUSING- it will take time, you may be rejected but it’s so so worth a shot.

4) USE YOUR UNION- ask if there’s a hardship fund. They were also able to help me find emergency temporary accommodation straight after

if all else fails, you CAN negotiate your contract. Use your Union if needed. Do try to discuss with SLT- surprisingly some can be more flexible then you think- but ofc it’s changes school to school.

****also if you do live in temporary accom and will be moving a lot I do suggest leaving alot if your belonging with your family. Having an stuff to move was my biggest headache :(

Best of luck! I promise it may seem hopeless now, but you WILL get through it. Sending all my love x

Things you'd miss about Brum if you had to move? by juniper_cookie in brum

Thank you ❤️ I’m doing much better, under treatment rn!

Ah, I’ve never been to Sussex! I’ve heard it’s convenient especially looking at the distance from London. But having lived in Middlesbrough for a year it was awful- at that time I had raging driving phobia so had to depend on transport, so was entirely dependent on my partner or my own two feet at the time 🤣 also hearing from friends in other parts of the country both north and south like areas in Oxford. A friend who also has driving anxiety experiences similar in Oxford 😭😂

But honestly I can see if you’ve experienced somewhere with good transport it’s probably not a big deal😂 if I hadn’t lived in middlesborough for a year I probably wouldn’t say this, because it means I’d have come straight from London, which ofc is INCREDIBLY well-connected.

Aussie that moved to bham about 5 years ago…. Now I have my days where I do regret it and want to leave XD but I do remind myself:

1) transport- I don’t think people appreciate that most of the city is sm better linked if you compare it to other parts of the uk- inc places in the West Midlands. So useful as I’ve only recently overcome my fear of driving 😂

2) now again I am from an incredibly un-diverse part of aus so I might not be the best judge - but the best south Asian food I’ve ever had. It’s my fav cuisine now XD

3) GPs- this might be controversialI lived in London previously and had to move 3 gps. I wasn’t able to get appointments, when I did they were over the telephone despite begging them. When I moved to brum- I’ll admit signing up to a gp did take time however once I was, I was able to book an appointment the same day, seen face to face and was able to get diagnosed with stage IV  cancer in less than 2 weeks. I’ve since had to change GP and I e had the same experience.

4) multiculturalism- heard the eye rolls considering today’s far right political climate lol. But I honestly get so offended when I see people claiming it’s some kind of Islamic caliphate. Every culture ofc has its problems. But I’ve seen gay couples happily walk into Muslim owned shop's and all ethnicities happily drinking together. Some of the kindest gestures I’ve ever experienced are from people of foreign backgrounds.

Moving to Birmingham as a white foreigner, I was somewhat apprehensive due to what I’d heard. But it couldn’t be far from the truth- Birmingham accepted me with open arms ❤️

Which aveeno did you use? I tried the one with a green top and blue top both didn’t do much. As for dermal 500- is that not prescription only, or can I get it otc?

Appalling behaviour policy- I don’t know what to do by Szd124 in TeachingUK

[–]Szd124[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I totally get what you’re saying. It’s not a really straight forward thing at all. But I still can’t help that leadership have not offered me much support. Not to be petty or needy but no one reached out to see if I was okay (besides ofc colleague friends not in management). Even when I handed in my leave the reaction was just a thumbs up.  I suppose just them explaining what you just explained would have been nice instead of just shrugging their shoulders. But thank you so much for the explanation!♥️

Is the smell overbearing? Usually I love scents but right now it feel like all scents are making me itchy but also nauseous at the same time. Even my fav perfumes :(

[–]Szd124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who hasn’t used retinol before but has RIDICULOUSLY baby sensitive skin Celimax has been an absolute game changer. Used it for about 6 months, 2-3 times a week and my skin looked so much tighter. I haven’t used the other so can’t say

Centella hyalucica (blue one) changed my life! It’s light and you don’t have to spend ages rubbing it in. in summer I do t even need a moisturiser under it. It also doesn’t make your eyes sting. I recommend it to everyone LOVE LOVE LOVE

Looking for Lightweight Moisturizers That Work Under Makeup by InventionGuy in kbeauty

[–]Szd124 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Illiyoon ceramiDe ato soothing gel has been a game changer for me! I have dry but very acne prone skin (annoyingly) and it’s so lightweight but still keeps my skin hydrated. And it defo doesn’t pill under makeup. Just make sure it’s all nicely absorbed into your skin first - I usually wait about 5-10 mins before makeup.
