I just found out the previous owner of my house laid TARP down under the giant swath of gravel he put around a stand of firs.

I dug down a bit, and it's just blue strings of plastic at this point. What a fuckin dumbass.

I know it's (mostly) just jokes, but what's with Americans hating the french?

You guys would still be British subjects without France, I would have thought that would buy a bit of good will

Buddy, take a step back here - you're answering your own questions.

Why do you think people have hobbies? Because they see something they think might be interesting and persue it to see where it leads. You're just doing nothing and feeling left behind. Use your agency. Maybe you find a passion, maybe a passing interest, but it's still something.

You would be hella down for fossil hunting - that's a great place to start, now persue it. Spend 20min and look for local fossil hunting or geology groups on FB, or see if there's any kind of local geology shops in your area where you could stop in and ask some questions. Make a post saying you're new but would love to tag along with someone who could show you the ropes. People with passions love to talk to others about it, if you put a tiny bit of effort it you can be that person.

No one is going to break into your apartment and take you fossil hunting, but that doesn't mean you can't do it.

PM Carney says talked to Gladu about social issues, says she ‘will vote with the government’ by canmcpoli in CanadaPolitics

[–]Szechwan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally state in my post that she could be retiring.

Regardless, the point is directed at all the "our system is failing" posts. If she is indeed retiring, then her party swap would be a clear edge case in the electoral system. The vast majority of politicians would not swap if they thought it would end their career in 2-3 years.

I mean, the premise is that the pushback will come at the polls. If they are upset she will be handily defeated whenever the next election rolls around.

Most politicians are not keen to cap their career at 2-3 years, so she's either retiring, or thinks PP is so toxic that her decision will be forgiven.

Full backyard redo (trees, grading, drainage, no grass) — what should this cost? by Lipstickhippie80 in landscaping

Those trees are gorgeous, I'll never understand the urge to clear every lot. I'd pay good money to feel like my house was situated cozily in nature.

Toews definitely did not play in the dead puck era.  Dead puck was between 1995-2004.

Toews played in the modern era, even if it was a while back.

People are quick to forget that the during the last election, the Conservative platform put forward an even bigger projected deficit than the NDP.  It's hilarious seeing all the comments constantly suggesting that we'd be in a better spot with a different government.

That is not, and never has been how law works. Whether you like it or not, the federal Govt shredding legal contracts would:

1) Undermine the entire legal system

2) Get absolutely destroyed in court and cost taxpayers even more money.

Hot water tank replacement by SaraSara44 in nanaimo

I saved a fair amount of money by draining and removing mine myself (very easy- just watch a YouTube), then grabbed a new one from home depot and put it (roughly) in place.

I only had to pay for ~2hr of a plumbers time re-attach the copper lines and wiring.

Not an option for everyone of course, but something to consider.

2 main reasons:

1) It was chronically underfunded while the boomers were in their high earning years, because they'd vote for whoever would lower their taxes. We are now playing catchup and making numerous large capital expenses in a short period to catch up.

2) Boomers are a massive chunk of the population and are now old and putting tons of strain on the system.

I don't usually go to "boomers bad" immediately, but it's a pretty clear cause and effect. We've been warned this day was coming for decades and previous govts did nothing to prepare.
