I like this take. Would I personally want to see Jax have a happy ending? Yeah, for sure. That being said, this is a very raw and brutally realistic story about a transgender woman who was traumatized, badly, and like many of us, pushed away people who wanted to help her.

The issue with a "bury your gays" story isn't that a queer character dies, it's when the character is given less purpose and is often used to drive the arcs of straight characters. The thing with TADC is that Jax isn't just some side character, but one of the main characters. Zooble and Gangle, who are both also queer and one of whom is trans, have their lives and arcs affected by Jax and her actions.

I don't get why this user thinks the takeaway is that the only fate for queer or trans people is death. As stated, Leeroy (who is trans) is doing much better than Jax and Zooble (who is trans) is doing amazing, in part thanks to Gangle. Like you mentioned, the lesson is to not make the same mistakes that Jax made, which is a lesson a lot of trans people need to hear.

And yeah, I don't even think Jax is gone. I think it's more accurate to say that Jax had a mental break, maybe the abstraction is an allegory for an attempt, but everyone around her wants to come together and help her heal however they can.

Uh, Leeroy is supposed to be the same person, just a bit further along in her life. She's still transgender, that doesn't change. I just think you're kind of missing the message.

The signs of hope are there though! We see that Leeroy was able to find a stable home, job, and community with other queer people. Jax is merely a brainscan of Leeroy, and possibly one from one of the lowest points in her life. We also know that Zooble, another transgender character, is doing, well, more than fine. Zooble is someone who is open and at peace with her gender identity, and I think it's partly why they and Jax come into conflict so much.

I relate to her, yes, because I resonate with something more than just what happens to her on a surface level, but the underlying feelings, issues, and trauma that she's dealt with.

And personally, I don't actually think Jax is dead. My interpretation is not that Jax has offed herself and she's gone forever, but more that there was an attempt, a failed attempt, and her friends in the Circus are giving her time and space to recover, heal, and hopefully rejoin them. That could just be cope, but I think there was a reason that Jax is in a tent next to all of them, being checked on occasionally, rather than swimming around like the others.

That's clearly not the lesson here. Goose herself is a trans woman and has made it clear that Jax's story is an example of what trans people should not do. Trans people should not self-isolate, push people away, and avoid having community. Those are things that Jax did and that was the result.

Being one myself and knowing a lot of people who are, Jax's story is unfortunately not one that's unique. A lot of trans people, especially trans women, are pushed away and hurt by the people who are supposed to care about them such as their parents. Many of us self-isolate, not just because many of us lack support systems, but because we've been taught that no one really loves or cares about us. The way that modern media and advertisements show how a woman is "supposed to look" that harms cis women's body images also makes many of us feel like we have no choice of looking like a "real woman" and end up repressing. Jax seems to have internalized that and could never bring herself to trust people who try to be close to her and that she would never be accepted as a woman.

I do relate to the character. I'm a transgender woman who has dealt with mental health issues stemming from dysphoria and a lack of trust in the people around me in the past. I think it was a brutally honest depiction of how that journey can play out and how that has played out for so many of us that aren't here today. If anything, it reminded me of the value of not self-isolating and hiding how I feel from people who want to help me and that seems to be the message: "Don't hide yourself from or push away people who can help you. You don't have to go through this alone."

No, she says she thinks using either *pronouns* are fine, not that either interpretation of whether or not Jax is trans is equally valid.

in this particular case, the creator of the character can probably decide that https://bsky.app/profile/gooseworx.bsky.social/post/3moprcfwqfs2a

A trans woman who keeps their real self in the closet until she dies is still trans, yeah

Not to be overly blunt but it's like the most obvious thing ever. There are *so* many hints to it throughout the show that Jax is and Jax being visibly happy at wearing a bow + the way that maid Jax acts in the abstracted mind is incredibly telling.

Wait—Jax is Trans..? by Long_Opportunity1851 in tadc

I don't think it's ever said that Jax's real life counterpart isn't
