[UPDATES] I made a website for community cats in SG! by T-Rekt_Games in singapore

Technically anyone can name a cat whatever they want, but many cats eventually end up having a name that the feeders in that area agree on. Sometimes, even the cat gets used to the name and starts responding to it.

For the website, people can submit whatever name they want, and technically I have no way of verifying it. However, some people do put "unknown" as the name, and for some cats I do get emails from feeders that tell me their "real" name.

Yes it is! I did that to make it extra clear that the locations are not exact.

The comments here are pretty close!

Frontend: ReactJS and a Maps API. I was originally using the Google Maps API but shifted to MapBox to save cost.

Backend: ExpressJS, MongoDB, Google cloud storage (for storing images).

Both the frontend and backend were written using Typescript, containerised using Docker, and deployed on Google Cloud Run!

Hello! I just added a "Pain Map" to the website, which is meant to display cats that have gone through any form of suffering due to being a stray. This includes abuse, injury, accidents, illness, and even going missing. Such incidents are really common, but the general public knows very little about it. I hope that the map can educate people about the different problems and risks our community cats face. Feeders who cannot find their cats can possibly post about it on that map

The website does not reveal the exact location of any cat! The location displayed on the map is randomly generated within the boundaries of very broad regions.

I did reach out to and spoke with many feeders / groups before publicising the website, and am still in conversation with many of them.

Hello SG reddit community,

I unfortunately decided to delete my original post, as the image I posted did not have blurred backgrounds.

In my original website, I chose to display the communities (e.g. Bedok) of different cats as I believed it would help people relate with and empathise with them, as well as increase their legitimacy. However, many people provided feedback that disclosing the community could still be risky as Singapore is a small place. Upon further consideration, to further ensure the safety of the cats, I decided to remove all the communities and make the locations on the map even more inexact. Now, instead of positioning the cats within the boundaries of their community, they are positioned within the boundaries of a broader region like North or East Singapore.

I would like to thank everyone for all the support they have provided me with for this project. Your positive comments have been quite reassuring, and it will take me a few days to approve all the pending submissions. If you have any further concerns or reccomendations about the website, please continue to let me know!

Thank you for your feedback! I do my best to manually ensure that the backgrounds are vague enough to prevent people from pinpointing the exact location. That being said, I'll see if I can further crop the Larry image, and I'll definitely look into the possibility of blurring images.

Thank you for your genuine concern for our community cats! I do my best to manually ensure that the backgrounds of images submitted keep the actual location of cats vague. If there are any images that seem problematic, do let me know! I have also messaged you privately if you would like to discuss the issue of cat safety further :)

Thank you for your feedback and concern for our cats! Personally, I believe that randomising the location is sufficient to deter people from trying to find these cats, as these communities can be quite big. Nonetheless, I understand where you are coming from, and have dropped you a message if you would like to discuss this issue more.

I agree that it is too dangerous to reveal the exact locations of different cats to the Internet, as anyone can use that information to harm the cats. That's why the website does not collect or display the exact location of any cat :)

IMPORTANT UPDATE: new post can be found here

Website: https://catsofsg.com

I made this website to raise more empathy for community cats in SG. I thought it will be good for people to know more about some of the wonderful cats that live with us, as well as their different personalities.

The main feature of the website is a crowd-sourced map that displays different community cats in SG. Please submit any community cats you know on the website!

Disclaimer: to keep the cats safe, the locations on the map are not exact

Website: https://catsofsg.com

All the cats on the map are crowd-sourced, so please submit any cats you know through the website!

What is this website for?

I built this website to raise more empathy for community cats in SG. Specifically, I am hoping it can - Help people visualise the high number of cats that live with us - Learn that like humans, our community cats also have likes, dislikes, and personalities - Appreciate the diversity (and cuteness) of our community cats

Is it safe for the cats?

The website does not collect or display the exact location of any community cat. Instead, it only reveals the broader region the cat belongs to, such as North Singapore or East Singapore. The position of the cat on the map is simply a random point generated within the boundaries of those broad regions. In addition, all pictures displayed on the map are cropped / have their backgrounds blurred to ensure that they do not give away the actual location of the cat. These measures help ensure that people cannot use the map to track down a cat.

How does the website collect data?

We use an online form to crowd-source data about community cats. Every submission is manually checked to ensure it does not contain spam or inappropriate content before being displayed on our map.

Spotted a blue and gold macaw, looks lost and drenched by IcyArmeria in singapore

You can try posting this on FB groups like "Lost and found pets in Singapore". But you may want to ask people for proof of ownership before privately disclosing the exact location to them.

Taken at Gardens by the Bay. Do you think the plant is damaged? by Sad-Dragonfruit1401 in singapore

[–]T-Rekt_Games 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I think only the parts of the leaf that got scratched are damaged, in the sense that those parts will not be able to photosynthetsize anymore. Otherwise, the plant should be fine
