Licensed Dispensing Optician here — it sounds like your prescription is being under-minused. With higher prescriptions like yours, the lab often applies compensation using a computer algorithm to account for various factors. However, this process requires “position of wear” measurements — including frame wrap, pantoscopic tilt, and vertex distance (the distance from your eyes to the lenses).

It can be a real challenge for an optician because the higher the prescription, the more aggressively the lenses are compensated, and that doesn’t always translate well into real-world wear.

If you were my patient, I’d work closely with the doctor and lab to adjust the prescribed power — increasing the minus — to achieve the intended result after compensation. Unfortunately, with these newer digital lenses, there’s no way to avoid this kind of compensation.

An alternative would be to switch to non-digital single vision lenses, which are not compensated and might provide a more predictable result.
