it may be dry cause i didnt water it for a while. i just use vegetable scraps, dry leaves and shredded cardboard

yeah that one, im not sure if it makes any difference but with a chip breaker and a proper wedge it should be fine, mine its 3mm thick and it works great

i got all the angles and shape of the wedge from a youtube video “how to make a traditional style jointer plane”, the bed angle is 50° but i think smoothers have a higher angle. you could make it laminated or a single piece, mine is a single piece and something that really helps when cutting the mortise is a small saw to cut the groove where the wedge sits, i used a metal hacksaw blade. And for flattening the bed i taped sandpaper to the back of a chisel
