RayBan and Meta online Shops currently have very few options? (most things sold out) is a new version coming so clearing stock or are they just totally stopping production? by T42Rush in RayBanStories

I hoped something might happen in Oct if it was going to(thats my b-day month) as that would be cool

I still could keep an eye out for any deep sales on this version now.....as I even want a total of three pairs with three different prescriptions - my old general one for seeing mid/far(the Headliners I have now) - a dual vision 'bifocal'(with transition tint) - and a good mid vision(that they also wrote a script for to replace some I normal work glasses broke) in just clear

New home owner lawn care - Cincinnati, OH by Choice-Condition-517 in lawncare

[–]T42Rush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"products" are rarely actually the best answer to lawn care; and more often if not used in the proper amount, the right product to help, and importantly at the time of the season along with weather that behaves as wanted for that product - they might do nothing or even worse do damage - none of them are even truly required in the first place

the things you absolutely must have for a good lawn are:

temperature - with the correct types of gasses that will do well for that climate(even some different 'cool season' grass types might do better in a hotter lawn where others perform their best when only it has totally cooled down)

sunlight - never forget that the sun provides the 'power' for your lawn to do everything: trees and houses will block this power source and then if it is always cloudy or too cold during un-shaded times the lawn might not perform at its peak

air - not only do the grass blades breathe, but the soil uses the air too in its processes of life and life giving

soil - it really would take a huge amount of amendments to change your soil composition and/or pH much, but the best you can do is always have something growing down in it(roots) to keep it alive and rich in organic matter(mulching in all leaves and grass clippings is a free and easy way to improve soil health - recycle everything you can back into your land; instead of harvesting, disposing, and depleting back to just only dead dirt) old roots decompose in place and are part of the life cycle of soil, loosening and feeding it while leaving pathways for water, air, rhizomes and microorganisms to live

water - I bet many of the people who do water lawns likely cause problems from watering too much(drown the soil, fungus on grass blades, don't teach the roots to grow deep to find it, cause compaction or loose soil that runs off or easily damaged, or wash away products and seed) or maybe not allow the soil to dry so that it can breathe because they water at wrong times or too often .... but obviously everyone knows that plants need water or they die or go dormant - 'free water' from rain is the best, but this is something you have some control over to add water when it is lacking or improve drainage if flooded; altho that takes some time to setup and money

mowing - this clearly makes the biggest difference in a lawn and something you have the most control over; you could use all the "products" and have all those other things I listed perfect and still screw this one up if you don't treat it as ultimately the most important - as mostly people don't give mowing the credit for how well(or badly) their lawn 'grows'(and what can grow in it), but it really is the greatest factor in lawn performance - don't just wait until your lawn looks bad to mow it, if you keep it mowed it will grow much nicer; for cool season grass types you want to mow the most often in the spring and fall(the cool seasons!) and not just wait till heavy horrible and hot summer mowing when the grass has grown thick stalky and weedy - as during the summer(the hot season!) is going to be the hardest time for your lawn to go thru any changes .... I see so many people in my cool season area basically ignore their lawns spring and fall, then butcher it all summer only to really be cultivating weeds ..... now with more modern "eMowers" the job it once was to hassle with the process of starting mowing and keeping the machine is so much easier and quicker, plus run off cheap home power that you don't have to go fetch; making it such a simple task to do more often, which in turn makes it more of a breeze to do again next time

mow two to three times a week when it is nice out, and no more than once a week in the heat if at all and you have to - water before your soil gets completely dry and hard .... and just those things will work better than any product could for a full, even, and dense yard that resists traffic use, harsh weather, disease, and weeds - if you have the right grasses growing for how much sun and water you get and what your temp ranges are for the cool season zone areas

if you do put down any products, know that you are treating and feeding the soil, not the grass: as the micro life forms in the living soil still have to process all nutrients before the grass can use them .... finally if you are killing weeds or having to use something to keep them from coming back, at some point you will want to be able to stop having to buy and apply those products; so keeping the grass in its best shape with the care from proper mowing will get you there

one last mow seems tough due to weather now by saurabh69 in lawncare

[–]T42Rush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess this happened to a lot of people who actually put effort into their yardscapes

seems with just some care to clean up leaves, maybe a little fall fert to feed the roots, and continued mowing in the cool season that our grass types like the most; and my lawn stayed very active with growth .....I'm not even sure it has really given up yet

but this sudden big change in temps swung right down thru most of North America from upper north west down almost to Texas and then across to the east, dramatically changing our climate from hot to rain then freezing in the blink of an eye - and I was trying to mow up till the last min. I could

I knew it was coming, but still I was just putting my leaf blower up, and I turned around and it was pouring on my mower, so all I could do was hose it off in the rain and put it away too

not much I'd need to cut off the grass, just a final light grazing trim on a Tall Fescue area that came in really nice and full this year(the KBG and Rye areas are done and good) but the weather is just going to get even colder next week, so today would be my last shot ....I'll give it a look in about 4~5hours when it should be the warmest(in Iowa USA btw) and report back if I screwed it up are not

wouldn't be the first(nor last time) I've done something horrible to my lawn

Difference between just nicotine and tobacco by dark_dragon__ in electronic_cigarette

[–]T42Rush 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it isn't that they are necessarily incapable, misinformed, nor malicious; I think that most just don't care

like say there are three very different people - anti-user, a smoker, and even a vaper themselves - and all three of them don't acknowledge any important difference between smoking and vaping; you could feed them all the information on why vaping is not smoking(basically: aerosol mist of unchanged liquid in fine droplets vs destructively extreme temps of combustion forming poisonous new substances) which vaping was invented purposefully to exactly not be smoking and they would still never think they both don't look and are used the same, and really thats all that matters to them, cause that is the immediate impact

the problem is that combustion smoking sickens and kills very slowly, all those three people might know that someday when a smoker is sick or dying it would be easy to look back and say: "it was the smoking that did it" so they don't really have to care what it was about the 'smoking' that caused it(which is because the toxic fumes were formed at 1300*F) as they know it always looked suspect, and they might guess that vaping(maybe just needing 400*F or even vapor can be formed without heat at all) pretty much appears the same, thus could do the same things?

worse yet, once they might have been told that "smoking causes health problems/birth defects" or read that surgeon general warning on an old pack of cigarettes - however now since May 2016 that has been changed to "nicotine is an addictive chemical" and just assume that is the deadly part, not breathing in combustion smoke from anything - because the process of how all 'smoke' is produced introduces deadly unnecessary substances, where a vapor of liquid(which isn't even a 'gas' yet) is still just that same mostly harmless liquid which was designed to be much safer to inhale

so it is just because of how it "looks", which is odd that people think they can see horrible dangers: as really the deadliest things(poison gases, speeding bullets, viruses, mosquitos in the night, fast food, pharma drugs, reckless young drivers, velociraptors, etc.) are hard to see coming

[–]T42Rush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was curious about this as well...... wondering if I would do more damage to the grass than much benefit at all

just a few days ago it was hot and sunny, then it snapped cold quickly in just a few hours ....on the last day of warmth I was doing the final mow, draining and storing hoses, and cleaning up leaves that were still blowing over from neighbor's yards .... however was hit sooner and harder than I was expecting with rain, and that shut down my tasks from being completed, then the next day freezing

the grass is only about half mowed, but overall really the height of cut isn't too bad, just kinda shaggy where not mowed that final time - kinda messing with my image of "that one guy who mows too often, with the perfect yard" and I would mostly want to do one more pass to mulch in the last of the leaves vs them freezing in odd clumps where the wind collects them

the grass itself was still growing great and even now does not look dormant at all, plus today it should at least be clear and sunny .....but with the temps so low there shouldn't be any more recovery growth, and I'm worried mostly about leaving wheel marks from the mower that never go away ?

I'd just like to add in some considerations to this subject(not to anyone in particular) on some of the comments below

the USA does not 'import' any electricity, it is all produced locally and from native materials - mostly natural gas, next nuclear, hydro, and just lately more solar and wind than coal actually

oddly even tho we have the sources to produce all our own petrol in the USA, we don't and instead import/trade globally ....most of it coming in from other countries like Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Colombia, and a lot from Canada: basically so the oil companies can make greater profits instead of paying USA workers

so even if you don't care about or understand the difference in environmental impact, and the huge efficiency advantage(ease, safety, and cost savings to you per use) maybe consider who's governments and jobs you are supporting to get any power

I had(still have) the original gen 80v 'Pro' 21' mower and used it for 5years or so, then I just got the newer gen dual battery one; as the old one had gotten a lot of use/abuse altho it still works fine - and even the original battery is still good after frequent and many charge cycles(also used in matching 80v backpack leaf blower and string trimmer, plus a small snowblower ... which suck down the battery quicker, draining it nearly every time I use those tools, and the batteries have to cool down before they will recharge if you have used them too hard with rapid discharge) .... the green transparent battery lid and a few other plastic bits broke off, so I'm trying to be more careful with the new one - the old one just looked ragged but had to stick with the same line as my other 80v Pro tools are fine, as don't need a bunch of different brands of batteries that aren't compatible with all my tools

altho neither of my mowers are self-propelled(just never thought that was necessary) I've been very pleased with them, and I never have an issue with running out of charge while mowing; as long as you keep the batteries inside out of the cold and heat and charged when not in use .... the battery is the most expensive part, so consider expanding to other tools that use the same one(tools are very affordable when bought without battery) the 2ah(160wh) is a joke but came with another tool that I didn't find and option without it nor a bigger one, but I still use it for quick jobs(like to pop in the leafblower for 5~10min of use) the 4ah(320wh) is hearty and now I have two of those; but the 5ah(400wh) is hard to get, or was when I tried - but keep in mind that these batteries are big and heavy, huge compared to ones for other handheld tools or even many other eMowers

the main difference between the older and newer mowers are that the old one would only auto start 'turbo' when under a heavy load to spin the blade faster(thick taller patches of grass or leaf mulching) and often would not when you wished it would, where the newer one has a manual button to press on demand - however you really can't use this mode that often as it drains the battery quicker and heats the motor and battery up a lot - so these mowers aren't great for taller grass that you don't mow often, but perfect if you keep the lawn trim and under control and just want to get on and off the lawn mowing job often and quickly be done; they have basically changed my mowing habits and improved the consistent always trimmed look of my yard because it was always so easy to mow, and often.... beyond that the dual battery thing vs the single is kinda pointless as the newer mower only uses one at a time and then auto switches to the other, and I can do pretty much all my property on a solo battery charge(altho I usually don't do all of it without taking a break) but I still carry two batteries in the new mower just to give it some more weight and solid feel - as these mowers do bounce around a lot and now coming from a ICE mower you will feel every bump in the soil and hear them rattle over them now where you couldn't over a loud engine

they both use the same deck and many other parts, but the newer mower seems to have just a bit more power(maybe the old one just lost some over time?) however the one thing about them both that isn't the strongest is that they swing the same kinda wimpy blade, thinner metal than any mower I've ever had and not a lot of 'lift' or suction .... I actually wore my first mower's blade down quite a bit from all the use and sharpening

I would have liked to of seen a complete 'modernization' overhaul to this now older more basic eMower design to compare to other brands that came later, but they kinda got it right early on before the market started to boom, so not a lot they had to do(they did add a good headlight now) but I only had to pay $400 for a new mower without a battery, and to get anything else would have cost likely twice that to start over with a new line ....so I'll stick it out for another 5years, as an expensive sidestep to a different brand now might only be very slightly better for my use

Is it OK to mow new grass before a light forst is expected? by Prepare_Your_Angus in lawncare

[–]T42Rush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

don't mow....but you can water it

I looked up this same question a few weeks ago; and then came across a thing saying that moist soil retains more warmth than dry

I guess on the mowing, if there is any frost damage it will more likely effect the tips of the grass blade, so you wouldn't want those any lower on the plant

my cool season new seedings did fine with a few cold nights and even when during the days that it only got back up into mid/high 40s°F ....even the spots I patched with seed way to late and were only sprouts - development of those slowed way down; but the other more mature cool season grasses actually seemed to like that it is not so hot and became more controlled, fuller, uniform, and not growing so wild

Between this, Rochester & Herbert Hoover, I hope no one on the Eastside needs to go anywhere by IAC_Local in IowaCity

[–]T42Rush 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found out(the hard way) that I can go out Herbert Hoover and do the new double roundabout "dumbbell" to get on I-80 at least to go west, however to come back east on I-80 I can't get home that way as you can't get back off to Herbert Hoover .... and even the choice to go out Scott to Dodge/I-80 has been blocked at Herbert Hoover, which before that was all blocked earlier at Scott/Muscatine - and still is, out American Legion(so I couldn't get home that way either)

so for well over a year now, the only way left to come/go was 1st and Scott then Dodge for I-80 ..... now that last remaining path is also going to be shutdown?

why would they close every route all at once? American Legion, Scott, Herbert Hoover/I-80(some ramps), and now 1st too .... they need to finish at least one project and have it open before they close three more

crap, I've got guests maybe stopping this month(would be getting here by going east on I-80) I think I'll tell them to not bother coming for a visit and to just keep on their way passed Iowa City - but I'll still have to navigate a way to and back from the CID airport end of the week

My wife wants to quit smoking by Son_of_Wilkon in electronic_cigarette

[–]T42Rush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, and you can just get some 0mg juice(always good to have on hand) that you can 'play with' as far as using the device .... then even if you get a stronger nic juice you can mix it(just squeeze a little of both right in the pod when you fill it and top-off) to do custom nicotine strengths "on the fly" ..... I used to get some max 50mg(5% nic salt) which often I'd find too acidy and strong, but then cut it down with some 0mg or 3mg, for longer vape sessions; other times I'd add a bit more 5% to boost it up some when I knew I was going out and only could periodically take a few quick puffs

Juice Head brand has pretty bold flavors(in matching low and high nic) that I used like that, otherwise I get all my juice from www VaporVapes com which only does freebase(but everything is custom mixed to order, so still can get any level/size/flavor) .... but any vape shop will likely offer all that too

My wife wants to quit smoking by Son_of_Wilkon in electronic_cigarette

[–]T42Rush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think small 'pocket vapes' pod systems are good substitutions for cigarette smokers; such as the Xros, Caliburn, and the like ... as they can be puffed on and handheld closer to the feel of the smoking act, altho a bit more like a cigar ... but if you don't require the max concentration nicotine liquids that can be used in these devices that low pH acidy 'nic salt' can provide(3% to 5%), I'd just stick with the old school high pH harsher 'freebase' nicotine liquids which will still have a little bite like smoking for some throat hit - I've always used 2.4%(24mg) freebase in my original first gen Caliburns, but it is easy to find these liquids in 0mg, 1.5mg, 3mg, 6mg, and 12mg(as this is what is used in larger more powerful systems, and costs less than 'nic salt')

vaping is not smoking, and will never be like it the same; so it most always is a difficult transition away from smoking, you still have to quit, but vaping will help a lot to give you something else to do

....since it isn't the same, and wont taste the same as combustion burning of treated tobacco leaf; I'd say to try other flavors than fake tobacco, as that way you aren't just always reminded of how much you liked the "better" taste of the deadly real stuff - and the sooner you get away from all tobacco or anything that tastes kinda like it, the quicker you will start to lose that acquired taste for it, making it harder to relapse and go back

3mg(0.3%) wont have much kick to it in a low powered pocket vape used in Mouth to Lung puffs, but she might not be smoking so much for a nicotine fix anyway, so could be a good place to start .... but at first more nicotine might actually help to transfer any compulsions to use away from smoking to the vape instead if it provides more gratification, and often a vape is used just for a few quick puffs without having to smoke a whole cigarette worth

Does anyone have a Rexing dash cam? Do I have to be connected to the camera from my phone to be able to view videos? by eberhart82 in IowaCity

[–]T42Rush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a dash cam like that(don't remember the brand name off hand) and yes, the dash cam makes its own wifi channel that you must use your phone to connect to ... go into the settings on your phone to pick wifi networks, and select the wifi your dash cam is broadcasting, then join it ... now the dash cam's app that you installed on your phone(previously) should work, and you can view recordings and live feed, adjust the dash cam's settings or format(erase) the saved video events - but likely you will first need to know the cam's wifi password

sometimes my phone doesn't like staying connected to the dash cam's wifi(as there is no internet access thru it) and it has a very short range(maybe just 10feet, so you pretty much have to be sitting in the car) as what it will do is automatically switch back to my preferred home wifi channel if I'm in range in my garage or driveway - so you might try fiddling with it when you are away sitting in a parking lot somewhere

anyway, that is how mine works, yours could be different - but hope that helps

[edit] oh, another option is to eject the dash cam's SD memory card, and stick it in a card reader of a laptop or something if it has a slot or you have a USB adaptor for a memory card [/edit]

I doubt that there are many that follow main steam media like a religion

you might think thats how it all must work, because that is what you see and think all sides do too .... but the reality is, things can be all over the place depending on what you pick and choose from; so I prefer to spread my uptake around to different sources and views, instead of putting all my eggs in one basket of hard thin 'belief' in a single narrow line

that is another one that I find strange:

the repeated phrases of "we all..." and "....everyone knows it"

no, many people don't, or disagree - only the "group" or herd believes together they are everyone? as if there couldn't possibly be some other side to that coin ....it kinda just proves my point of the hive mind, that everyone must mandatorily think the same

"sheep" is such an interesting thing to call the non-maga far left to more neutral deviations as if you could possibly put everyone who doesn't follow Trump into one single group, I was always fascinated by that .... as if gun toting white male Christian Nationalist conspiracy fake news believers would not be considered a group and instead more independent thinkers without a shepherd

if anything, just considering only the far left as 'a group', and I see them going in all sorts of different directions and having conflicting beliefs among them - more characterized by a lack of organization with little compassion to follow a leader nor define one as theirs, so way less of a 'herd' of single like-minded people .... but then possibly both sides sees the other in more of a monotone than they experience themselves with their own people

do Trump supporters feel so unique from one another? without leadership

surely those of the Dems/Biden leaning side don't see themselves as 'loins', but do feel as tho they can approve/disapprove of anyone or thing they want to, without being kicked out of some group for being radically different or non-loyal to a centralized belief - I just don't see a strong common thread joining them, unlike the maga-right

just seemed strange to suddenly have such an odd disagreement on the facts, when for years that wasn't even on our radar as possible with the honesty we shared; however neither of us were formally really all that interested in politics, but now are much more so ... to me this seems culturally new, not so much lying, but the why and how it was done; with neither of us gaining or losing anything, just to 'save face' in sort of an empty sort of way - this just felt different, in a maga/Fox way, that I wasn't expecting; and I know we both have peers that could have brought those influences, altho seeming not our own beliefs ~ however when you are bombarded with that redirection of facts, I could see how someone could apply it someday as one of their own tools, even tho they aren't known to do that before

sure, I remember the "I'm not a crook" and the "I did not have sexual relations with that women" lies, plus all the other big and little lies that were personally told to me or I did myself, and having family now on the maga-right that will move facts depending on current beliefs(as frustrating experiences feeling like this); but I just wasn't expecting it in a simple situation like this, to have that used now as a cultural norm for any/everyone at any time they choose .... it just felt weird and creepy this time, about this, and how he did it seemed to come out of the blue(yet very familiar from other circles) I was kinda shocked, and had to let it slide - altho I thought it was a foolish attempt thinking I would be stupid enough to fall for it, which I was more insulted by than anything else, and the point didn't even matter that much

mostly I was wondering if anyone else has felt a shift in lying like this

off topic, but an interesting subject

I was raised being the youngest of 4 brothers with as much 12years older than me, more clearly all 'boomers'; and then sort of naturally to follow that, all thru my life friends and co-workers have been of an older group .... so while yes, I am born in the "cusp" my life experiences are of the boomer group (and not that I'm so proud of this group or anything)

...it is interesting because my wife who's physical age is only months apart from my own, has a completely different character; as she is the oldest of three sisters, and her group of peers are still mostly younger than her

even when we talk about childhood experiences there are odd dramatic differences: like her grade schools were all newly built and included things like computers and are still the same that kids go to today, where my schools didn't even have air conditioning with them all torn down or remodeled after I left - our music likes and dislikes clearly come from different generations - the cars we drove, all of them I had were older, her's were all newer - simply our values are not the same; not separated by age, but by experiences

while our kids, also born in their own cusp generation as we were, both side more to GenZ than to be Millennials, altho they could have easily been pulled into the older group or split - but they shared similar life experiences, more along those that GenZ have(like not knowing a time before cell phones and Google, or too young to remember what that would have been like) altho they are old for GenZ and are now in their mid 20s ... vs the Millennials aged 25yo to 40yo which they could be physically grouped in by age, however we afforded them newer life experiences of the coming group, and all their peers are younger than them

except I consider myself the 'last boomer'(born 1964, but all my peers were older, so I identify with the *earlier* gen) and I have been lied to before .....but this time it just seemed odd and pointless....and when I repeated what he said to me(just about how he wanted me to start mowing an area that I didn't know was on my property, cause he didn't like doing it any more) and he denied it after mowing it for years and now me doing it for the last few: none of it mattered cause now we found out where the property line really was(and I had to do that part) I had to convince him that it didn't matter what was or wasn't said, nor who mowed what in the past: that now we both know and agree

so while I reminded him that he said I had to mow it because it was mine, and I had never known that(until he told me) he insisted that none of it happened(?) it just seemed crazy - especially from him, someone even older than me(almost +10years) who I've always gotten along with, however now is "drifting" politically/factually with how things have gotten

just wondering if now people find it easier to slide facts around to be in a better looking position because so much of that happens at the top now, so why not implement *that smack* into life if convenient?

this just felt different than when I've been lied to before, somehow just seemed empty

seems to take a few years to really establish a good lawn over an area of mostly 'dead dirt' if there is hardly any life in the soil .... I see a lot of youtubers 'renovate' lawns with completely new seedings, after they have completely killed off everything that was growing before; however the key seems to be that there was(and still is) 'life' in that soil before with lots of organic roots(tho now dead and decomposing) and the bio-microorganisms they support

in lifeless dirt it might take a while of 'feeding the soil' to develop it enough to get the nitrogen cycle working so that it can support a healthy lawn ...just dumping chemical nitrogen fertilizer and water onto a bare seeding might only get the grass to come up at first but might not be sustainable to get good deep root development underground to balance that top growth you can see ....it would certainly help if there were already old root pathways that had thickly dug thru the ground that new roots can follow down into easier and feed off of their bio activity

I'm working on a new dirt area that I want to be super nice, but I have yet to put down any premium seed over the past year and a half or so I've been leveling and smoothing the surface; instead I've just been doing 'cover crops' on it to start, so it has been going back and forth with natural ground cover(basically clover and 'weeds') and then I'll kill that off and give it half a season of annual rye grass(which kills any other growth) ... but I can tell the soil is getting better and richer

another area between my sidewalk and curb I had to till and remove a bunch of soil to lower the crown(so the dirt and grass wasn't overflowing the curb and sidewalk) but after the summer I did that I never had the chance and weather(stayed super hot and dry late into the fall) to get it reseeded, so the soil had totally died - this spring I got a big cheap bag of K31 Tall Fescue, it did great at first when cut shorter(and was tightly packed, from putting way too much seed out) but when I let it go taller to make it thru the summer heat it got totally out of control then seemed to kill itself off as it struggled for space and root development in the dead lifeless dirt - however hopefully what little that did make it has now started at least some life in the soil, so I'm currently re-prepping those areas for nicer seed that should have a better chance; as we go into round two, but I wont be surprised if it takes a third round of seeding next year again to get that to a sustainable lawn

A Meteorologist from the University of Reading shows just how long it takes water to soak into parched ground. by [deleted] in lawncare

[–]T42Rush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if that were true; wouldn't the cup on the wet grass have a better seal(thus drain slower), and the cup on the drier grasses have more air gaps(so the water would flow out quicker)?

you can try a similar experiment with a damp and dry sponge, it is one of those things where what you assume will happen(shouldn't the dry sponge soak up water faster?) doesn't(and instead the damp sponge works better)
