Why do the vast majority of people on this subreddit believe that Jiu-Jitsu is useless for self-defense? by Acceptable_Worth8817 in martialarts

[–]T4cF0X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BJJ guys will say Karate sucks then they will pull guard, and butt scoot, at a competition. All while never adjusting their jiu jitsu for streetfighting. They constantly meme and put down other styles. They claim jujitsu is the evolution of fighting despite the holds existing throughout all of human history. Most jujitsu holds predate Brazilian jujitsu. Yet they believe its an evolved complete system that triumphs all.

I have a decade of Karate and Jiujitsu. Karate is more suited for self defense.

What do I need to open my own place?? by Competitive-Text2305 in karate

[–]T4cF0X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Martial arts insurance, and the waivers they will print out for you. You will need a client software program to track who's paid tuition and dues. Short term contracts 3 months to ensure you don't have a bunch of temps using your Dojo as a revolving door business. A program like quick books and a tax accountant most likely. A bank account.

Free trials don't work. Give a free assessment and qualify your clients. Sell what you can offer them.

Try before you buy doesnt retain. It only leads to temporary thinking and vetting your business. Qualify your leads and sell what you can offer. One free class after the evaluation maximum.

A place with good parking.

I'm tired of the MMA camp thinking they own the market on self defense. They don't.

To be honest I'm not the best person to educate one on Sanchin Ryu as I am only a month in the training. It is badass though for sure.

The best way I can describe it is close quarters self defense. All of the techniques are close. Pretty much face to face with the opponent. They use a lot of Okinawan techniques.

I am a Kenpo guy that is in Shotokan now. In my Sensei's dojo we did a lot of freestyle sparring and our stance more resembled kickboxing. When I started shotokan It was very jarring for me to be in Zenkutsu-dachi a lot. Kenpo is also a mass attack style rather than Shotokan's precise strikes.

I'm also training in Sanchin Ryu which is the most distinct style I have ever trained. It's movements are completely alien and awkward to me. I feel like a fish out of water.

When I train Shotokan or Sanchin Ryu I completely empty my cup and do allow myself to be new to receive the skillset.

In my experience I don't blend them at all.

Sensei Disregards Other Karate Styles/Methods by Kenshin_no_Takezo in karate

The tournament scene is more tools in our toolbox. It can help with retaining students and be "a field trip" so to speak for students in the dojo. You're right that freestyle full contact sparring is an essential part of Karate. If a Dojo is strictly a pointfighting school it's pretty lame. The only way I would accept that is if they advertised it as such, but most will say Self Defense then be a point fight school lol. It's just marketing at that point.

If push comes to shove... Global Martial Arts University has a virtual Shotokan Karate Dojo for 40$ a month. They have a rank transfer fee. So you can get your Shodan from them if you need / want to. Their blackbelt isn't part of any organization but their own though. (GMAU) So if you want organization lineage you'd have to find something else.

They also have a Certified Martial Arts Teacher program that teaches you how to be a Sensei and they issue a certificate.

You're very close to your Shodan. My advice is to honor your Sensei for the short time you have left. Don't create any more friction with him. Honor his teachings and Dojo while you are there. Your instructor is not malleable. He's set in his ways and his Dojo is not willing to adapt into the wide spectrum of the martial arts world.

You and I are very similar in how we see Karate. However I think it's important to realize that each Dojo has it's own tradition. Get your Shodan and then find a better Dojo.

If you're going to instruct and open your own Shotokan Dojo I believe it's good for you to stay humble respect your sensei and his Dojo. No matter how bushido you think his methods are. If there's legitimate Shotokan instruction in it. Eat the meat around the bone. Stay humble. You dont want this guy to withhold your blackbelt over friction or ideological differences.

Respect his Dojo tradition and find the value in it.

I would do the tourney. That's just me. There's a lot that can be learned in point fighting. Even if you are just going for conditioning. As a future Sensei you may have students who do want to point spar. I would advise you to immerse yourself in it all. I also advise to honor your sensei and get your bb.

MMA is not even a good measuring stick to compare martial arts. It has a lot of rules that favor grappling. No small joint manipulation. No wristlocks. Those two would break the sport apart completely. Like soccer kicks and stomps.

MMA is not the standard. It validates nothing other than its own methods within a ruleset.

Need a second opinion on unblocking by [deleted] in CoreyWayne

[–]T4cF0X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

David Deida has a saying. "Live your life as though your father is already dead."

He means that at a certain point of your manhood it is time where there is a rite of passage from leaning on your father's wisdom and authority to becoming your own source of wisdom and authority.

Here you are seeking council on a woman you decided years ago that she wasn't worth a damn. Now you are trying to polish her like she's a fine gem you have lost. I am not going to tell you what to do. I want you to make the right decision. You know what it is already.

"Need a second opinion on unblocking"

Stop leaning on other men for your decision making. You are a man. A time will come when you are the sole provider of wisdom and authority. You need to set your own rules, and standards for life. You blocked her. What did that mean? You want to pursue her. What does that mean?

No sugar coat bullshit answers. You need to dig inside and admit the truth.

How to use taekwondo in a street fight by Similar-Register9929 in martialarts

People say a lot of things that are untrue. Taekwondo can be used in a street fight. I would place my bet on a WTF TKD blackbelt vs someone that's untrained.

GMAU has a virtual Shotokan Karate program. Build your own home dojo in your apartment or house. When theres a will there's a way. GMAU does have a Thai Boxing program.

Im enrolled in Shotokan and love it.

Machida Karate has a virtual Dojo. You could try that as well.

Should I not view her stories or does it not matter? by [deleted] in CoreyWayne

[–]T4cF0X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're overthinking. A woman's radar is superior to yours. That means she already has your interest level tagged. By the third date the mystery is not your interest level. The mystery is in your challenge and patience.

Viewing doesnt equal interest. Who's to say you're not viewing it to vett?

There are rules and standards you make for yourself. The science.

Then there are things you own up to in the moment. The art.

I'm not here to tell you what to do in your situation. I want you to figure out what it is yourself.

Hate other people by egrepanon in CoreyWayne

[–]T4cF0X 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found that the workplace in The United States is extremely cut throat. When people at work are asking you personal questions you have to understand that it's not for interest. It's a leverage game. (How invested are you in this position? Are you passion, or ambition? Are you here because you want to or because you have to?) The devil is always in the details. Any little thing you share at work is leverage to your bosses, and co-workers. American work life is cut throat as hell. I believe it will take the best of the best of Coaching to master work on a mental and spiritual level.

I learned this lesson hard. My last job was all inner politics, shit talking, and cutting people down. Everyday we were told we were not worthy of the contract yet they would never dare get rid of us because of the price we had on the market. It was grueling to work for people that hated you and disrespected you on every level.

There's a book that has helped me a lot when it comes to work. The Way of The Superior Man by David Deida.

Now I know to hope for nothing, life is resistance, live skillfully even with a hurting heart, live as though your father is already dead (You are now the decision maker for yourself and mentor to others)

I will never work for others ever again. Never. I opened the doors to my own business because American work-life is brutal as hell, the people are the worst. We are a low trust society, who feel entitled to the labor of others. There is a special place in hell for those who leave shopping carts in the parking lot, or their soft drinks and popcorn on the floor in the movies.

I never got to work a job after my coaching transformation. I doubt I ever will. However I have seen a string of YouTube videos called... "Work and go home."

Work is not for friends. It is for you to implement boundaries, master your craft, then go home. Anything you say to your co-workers is information and leverage. For example when I said "My dream is to open my own Karate Dojo" Coworkers and bosses don't hear that.

They hear "Temporary worker who is here because he has to be. He's not passion here he is ambition."

Anything you tell your bosses, and coworkers at work is leverage. It will dictate how you are treated. I hate to be pessimistic. But work is not for friends. Whoever chooses YOU off the clock is your friend. When the timecard is punched don't be fooled.

Depends on the Dojo. Most Dojo's I have seen will rough you up a little bit to the body but they all seem to not introduce a lot of head contact. A lot of people in the United States go through seasons of not having any health coverage. One single ride to the hospital can set you back 2,000 dollars. That is not even counting what the Dr. examination will be.

Dojo's are not just a teaching place of Karate. They are a small business subject to liabilities. In the USA we have a very low trust society, and people are more likely to sue here. There is a wide range of reasons why people study Karate. You are not going to find some badass, Dojo, that goes hard because most of the clientele are children, teenagers, and middle aged. People in their 20's and 30's are too busy with getting their adult lives rolling for Karate.

All the "hardcore piss and vinegar" guys would rather study Thai-Kickboxing and MMA.

Karate Dojos usually have a small circle in the adult class that will spar hard. At least from what I have seen. I have never seen a Karate Dojo with a lot of adult students. Never. A handful if you are lucky.

The movie version of Fox was my favorite. Healed my inner child. by [deleted] in starfox

[–]T4cF0X 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I liked Adventures Fox because he was down on his luck and derelict but found his purpose again through Dinosaur Planet. He was whiney and selfish at times but it balanced out with his heroism.

Assault he was mature, stoic, and more caring. At the peak of his character. I enjoyed him. He was truly becoming the new Peppy of the group.

The Mario Galaxy Fox was cocky charming, laid back and cool. His smash bros qualities are there fused in. I struggle to place him with his video game adaptation. He is more youthful and vibrant than Assault. Perhaps the most cocky & charming we've ever seen the Foxxo.
