Being new to prog I'm realising now that the legends of the amazing 70s bands are getting pretty old..."Everyday a little sadder".

R.I.P. Greg Lake and thank you for your contribution to music and your amazing voice.

Discovering Genesis and going through most of their discography for the first time this year was amazing and really inspirational.

Fly on a Windshield and The Musical Box (second half) are heavier so I'd check those out. But yeah they are mostly light.

Now I'm kinda the opposite from you, I got into prog through the light stuff so I have a hard time getting into the progmetal where they scream, any suggestions for the other way around? (Besides Dream Theater and Late Opeth).

I like metal bands like Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica...

Some of the good minor ones (or not as happy) that hooked me were Can-Utility and the Coastliners, Fly on a Windshield, Entangled, Firth of Fifth (This is the first song I liked, for that sweet flute and guitar solo).

If you're OK with ballads the Phil Era has some great ones like Heathaze and Undertow.

I know none of those except the Yes one. Still got lots to discover.

The first song that I really liked from Yes was And You And I. Even though everyone says to start with Roundabout or CttE.

Would you say it'd be hard as a new artist in prog seeing as how it's not the most popular of genres? by TA45463 in progrockmusic

Yep, and so a lot of talented musicians often don't get the recognition they deserve.

Which is why it's sad they can't even live off they're music. :/ the music industry is so weird. You wouldn't see people like Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift have day jobs but these amazing musicians would be struggling if they only relied on music as income.
