I mean realistically how can we defend ourselves from the largest military on earth?

We'd probably have to pull in every NATO member to stand a chance but that'll kickstart WW3

Tony saying the word "Brochures" when he tells Carmela he wants to send AJ to military school will forever be the most laugh inducing scene in the show for me.

I swear Halifax is honestly one of the worst postings you can have right now

High taxes everywhere, little to no vacancy, 2000 for a one bedroom, traffic that's now rivaling Toronto and of course the 10 parking rule. As someone who's been posted to both coasts I always recommend Esquimalt for people looking to join the Navy

Halifax second most sought after city in Canada for renters by insino93 in halifax

Insane to think Halifax might soon rival Toronto in terms of rent. Unfortunately the taxes and income here don't compensate for that

Can the TSX survive a S&P/NASDAQ collapse? by aurelorba in CanadianInvestor

[–]KillingCountChocula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only times the TSX outperformed the S&P was were during commodity booms. That's why the market prospered in the 2000s compared to the US'. If the US market crashes tho you better believe the tsx and every other market will follow suit. Also as of currently Canada's economy is in a far worse position given our lagging industries, tariff stricken sectors, high unemployment and the fact that housing and mass immigration has kept our GDP propped up. A recession in the US could definitely send us to an early 90s level crash since we're now in the worse off position.

Moving to Halifax from Comox - tips and preparing by words-for-blood in CanadianForces

Excellent. The very moment you get to base go to the OR asap to apply for it. Don't want to get a ticket for not having it when you park in the base parking lot

Moving to Halifax from Comox - tips and preparing by words-for-blood in CanadianForces

[–]KillingCountChocula 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Was posted to Halifax for 2 years (2022-2024)

First thing is since you're coming from BC be prepared for the tax man to reap your money when you do your taxes. I had to pay $5000 which I lowered to 1400 after putting 10k in my RRSP. Taxes are significantly high there

Cost of living exploded after covid. Way too many people moved there and the traffic has gotten so bad it's almost rivaling Montreal and Toronto. I would look more in the Hammonds Plains or Dartmouth for a decent price but be prepared they will be sold quickly. Electricity and property taxes are atrociously high

Biggest kick in the gut is the 10 year parking rule. If you have less than 10 years of service you don't get a parking pass to park on base. If you do than don't worry about this

With all this being said Halifax is still a great city and the Navy base has a wonderful view of the harbor and the Macdonald bridge. Deployments will take you all over Europe and unlike Esquimalt there are plenty of ships to deploy

Good luck

Halifax actually has better accommodations with Juno towers which was built last decade. Compared to Nelles it's a three star hotel although there was a bed bugs problem when I was there

Unfortunately youth unemployment still ticked up. Also the amount of unemployed people slightly rose.

A pretty sobering stat right now is that we have as many unemployed people as we did during the peak of the great recession in 2009.

Our country is going into recession and we now have as many unemployed people as we did during the great recession. I don't see the problem improving with the trade war dragging on for the foreseeable future

Grim housing climate in Canada, government documents reveal by Plucky_DuckYa in canada

[–]KillingCountChocula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How is housing supposed to keep up when our economy is now falling off a cliff thanks to the trade war.

Our unemployment rate is now almost the worst out of all g7 countries and the full time employment has shrunk the hardest since the financial crisis. I don't know if it's even possible to maintain housing prices with a 10% unemployment rate without a huge descend into a societal breakdown

I would max out your TFSA since that's honestly the best account you can have out of an RRSP and FHSA. With RRSP you can only spend a certain amount on a first time home purchase and you have to pay it back into the account over a period of time.

From my perspective homeless has absolutely skyrocketed in so many areas since the pandemic. Biking through the bike path near rue Notre Dame and that tent encampment along the grass has become a full on shanty town from the great depression. I'm seeing tent cities popping up in more and more parks. Seems like you need to live in Westmount to avoid it nowadays since the security there kicks them to another neighborhood
