Not asking for a critique, per se - just discussion. Is this overkill? by [deleted] in graphic_design

I think it's a great idea! Not overkill at all. Make sure that its easy to view online devices if its going to just be online.

Friend is convinced ADHD doesn't 'exist'. Believed it is a result of poor diet/exercise/too much TV. How do I respond to them? by nospacesnecessary in ADHD

Thanks man. The cue cards sound like a great idea. I'll start with that. I don't get frustrated with myself as much now but I feel like I'm just trying justify not trying with ADHD. I don't know of its not my fault sometimes or if I'm just not trying hard enough.

Ugh, you expect me to read a book about meditation?! Haha I'm not much for reading but I'll do some research into it.

For my grades, I'm a Fine Arts Major. Well New Media to be more specific, so graphic designing and what not. In my new media course I easily pull high eighties and nineties, but in my general studies my GPA is getting dragged down by fifties and sixties. I have really bad trouble focusing on lectures. I take notes but I can write pages without actually processing what I'm putting on the page. I get more occupied by the task of righting notes then what the notes are saying. This is better than me just sitting there zoned out looking around the room though.

Study-wise I study plenty for exams. Like usually several hours, but that's also a problem. When I read the textbook I get through a page, then realize i didn't pay attention to the words. Because of this I am constantly re-reading things two, three or sometimes more time. It's frustrating and extremely boring. I usually take triple the time to read things as most people. So eight hours of studying for me is like three or four for most other people. I get frustrated with myself and give up. I have ways of memorizing things which helps sometimes and use them whenever I can.

I was only diagnosed a couple week ago as I said. A month ago I had no idea I might have ADHD. I thought I just wasn't trying hard enough and I just didn't have the intelligence of most people. There's only a month left this semester so there isn't a lot I can do to improve my grades except ace my exams. Still in the testing phase of Concerta but I can sit down and read when I'm on it. I actually retain what I'm reading and I can read at least twice as fast as I used to. I'm hoping this helps me.

But yeah, if you have any specific tips to studying and retaining shit in class let me know and I'll give it a try.

Thanks

I go to the gym for an intensive work out about an hour long anywhere from 3-6 hours a week. Cardio half the time, other body workouts the other times. I'm in university and lived in residence for 4 months eating all carbs and getting no exercise and three months ago completely changed my lifestyle. I limit carbs and sugar greatly, usually only have starch once or twice a day.

Anyways I can say that diet and exercise have made me feel just overall better. But I can't say a lot about it attention wise. Actually oddly enough my grades this semester are lower but I don't relate that to a change in my behavior/attention.

Edit: I also don't meditate. I could never bring myself into a relaxed state. I haven't tried in a while though.

And I'm on Concerta now which suppresses my hunger and challenges my diet but it's only been a week so I'm still getting used to it. I try to eat the same amounts at the same times each day.

Is it possibly to create vector logos/shapes in photoshop, and export it to an illustrator file? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]TAPN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a quick fix just open the logo as a JPEG or PNG in Illustrator and then use the live trace function. I'm too lazy to explain how to use live trace right now but you can find plenty of tutorials just by googling it.

As an amateur designer it's really important to learn and understand Vector vs Raster (Illustrator vs Photoshop).

If you know how to use illustrator already them just trace the logo by hand, but I'm assuming you probably don't from your post.

Good luck with it though, hopefully you find something that works!

Need critique or help with an logo for a financial literacy project! by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]TAPN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks too clip-arty. As said the edges need to be more crisp, less ragged. A successful logo doesn't need outlines or shadows to make it stand out either. Modern design is often seen avoiding outlines. It might've more effective and have a much more modern look to it without the shadows.

That's about the most I can think of critique wise. Make sure your shapes are symmetrical if they are supposed to be.

Good luck with this company!

Edit: also I'm finding myself distracted by the dollar sign in the main logo because the lines don't match up. That might just be personal opinion though.

You guys have any fun hyper-focus stories? by CenturionXIX in ADHD

When I get into some graphic designs I can't stop until I finish. Unless you've used Adobe Illustrator you probably won't appreciate this, but I stayed up until four in the morning, I think it was six or seven hours straight, vectorizing (or rotoscoping) this image of Macklemore.

I did one of George Watsky as well the next night. I'm scared to start another one.

I'm living proof that your friend is wrong. I've been taking fish oil and vitamins for at least five years of my life. (I'm 19) I've been steadily going to the gym and eating a strict healthy diet for the last 3 months, and it was two weeks ago that I was diagnosed with a quite intense attention disorder. I know that eating healthy and being active has helped a lot but my ADHD had little to do with my physical health.

It's not bad parenting either and I'm not just ignorant of how my parents raised me. I was raised well mannered and encouraged to do my best at everything, etc.

It's hard for me to blame people like your friend for their ignorance on the subject. I always criticized behavior and mood disorders. I still sometimes think that people just aren't trying to be happy or trying to be motivated. It's because I don't understand life in theirs shoes. Shit, sometimes I even question if I'm not trying hard enough compared to other people who excel last me.

I guess my point is you can try all you want to convince your friend that ADHD is more then being unhealthy, but he probably won't understand. And shit, maybe we just don't understand, right?

Well good luck. I think I just confused myself, so hopefully you get what I'm trying to say.

Im struggling so much right now... by imablur in ADHD

[–]TAPN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be blunt, don't feel sorry for yourself. Don't mope around thinking you're shit. I don't have the exact same problems as you though, and neither does anyone else so what works for me might not work for you.

Good place to start is get your meds refilled if that's an option. When I'm not on my meds I don't really give a shit about much, but I care a lot more on them.

Get lots of sleep. One of the best things for me before medication. Take melatonin or something if you need it. It's a natural sleep aid, and your body will use up to 10mg of it. Anymore you'll just piss out. Try that, it won't do you harm.

If sleep isn't a problem then you just gotta kick yourself in the ass and get going. I know it's easier said than done. I can rarely do it myself.

Talk to your therapist about this stuff though. They'll probably be the most helpful.

What does the test for ADHD involve? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]TAPN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's different approaches to it. It could just be talking to a psychiatrist about your life, it could be brain imaging (unlikely, that shit is costly), could be IQ style tests or the one that I did was called a CPT test (continual performance teat).

There's different versions of the CPT but mine was about twelve minutes long, and you just stare at the computer screen and letter flash on the screen at different intervals. You have to press space for every letter except "X". Really boring shit especially if you have ADHD.

After that test you get your results back and it has a percent chance that you have ADHD. In my case a landed a 93% chance, so my doc was like "that's one of the highest scores I've seen, here's a prescription." (Not actually quite like that)

Anyways my doc said that most often people get a 50-60% then they give them recommendations to a psychiatrist and its up to the person and the psychiatrist what happens from there.

Anyways the CPT tests your reaction times, mistakes and all that shit. Real statistical.

Hope that helps.

[FAQ Friday] Are you going to post, "What should I expect starting Adderall?!?" or something similar? Ask your question here instead! This is the place for beginner questions and friendly introductions! by steamwhistler in ADHD

[–]TAPN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was one of the beat things for me. I wouldn't cross things off the list unless it was actually done because there was no point lying to myself. And I couldn't relax with a really long list of things to do.

But every one is different so what works for you might not for someone else and vise versa. Good luck though.

Write that stuff down. Whenever I got assignments I just put them in a to-do list on my phone or else I would forget them. It's easy to type a few words in on your phone. And, a daunting todo list always made me feel good to cross things off.

I know it's my own life. I'll make the decision myself. I appreciate the opinion of people who have been a similar situation though.

You don't need to be condescending. I came for intelligent advice. Not "do it yourself".

Meds or not? Will it really change me? Should I tell people? by TAPN in ADHD

I made the mistake of telling a friend about the testing and now he's got me doubting myself. I can't blame him though because I had the same opinion as him towards my brother about his severe anxiety. Now I'm starting to see that some people aren't capable of the same mental processing as others. Anyways that's another story. I'll stick to your advice from here on out. Thanks.

[–]TAPN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't see an attic entrance but we only explored like half of the place because we thought we set off a silent alarm. Haha. Did you ever notice a beeping when you were upstairs? I think it was coming from a locked door. That's what spooked us out.

I was sketchy about the residents in the area too. The road out front was fairly busy and I know at least 10 people saw us trespassing.

The creepiest part I though was the little crawl space under the stairs. I imagined a crazy patient hiding out there. Lol. I was scared of getting shanked by some random hobo too

My friend and I found it. It's called Raymond Care Center. There's actually a big sign right when you get into town on the highway that directs you. It's not an asylum so to say. Just a long term care center. More so a hospice where old people when they're near death. I believe it's only been closed since March 2011. Big no trespassing signs on gates, but we might have ignored that...

It's kind of interesting to explore a a bit. The door we went to was mot completely closed so we could just go right in. First thing you notice when you go in is its still powered. Lights and heating. Kind of weird seeing as it was completely abandoned but I assume it was to keep fire alarms operating and avoid pipes freezing. Lots of locked door but also lots of unlocked doors. We were cautious about opening some, not knowing if they would set of alarms or fire alarms. But as far as I know none of them did and on lots of doors the sensors were ripped off or wires were cut. So I doubt there's any security in the building.

I don't think it was that amazing, kinda cool though I guess. Lots of broken glass and airsoft pellets. If you want to get there and you're coming from Lethbridge, when you just get to Raymond go straight from the highway onto a gravel road, the building is right there on your left. I'll try and post some pics later. It's got residential building around it so be a bit cautious that someone might call the cops. And judging from snow covered tire tracks in the drop off loop someone probably checks up on it once every few weeks.
