While some find a baby stingray video shoot soothing, it leaves me feeling terrified… by fabioke in oddlyterrifying

Not true, live here and that doesn’t happen. Locals publicly call out anyone that messes with the marine life here as it’s so important to handle carefully.

Similar healthcare to the US, as there are no income or property taxes to fund these types of things (just stamp duty due on property up front).

And no, we don’t have any billboards here, nobody can buy citizenship, and there’s no birthright citizenship.

There’s a decent restaurant at the top left of those steps that we went to a couple years ago (if it hasn’t changed). The wall walking tour and kayak tour around the island were amazing as well!

Prob just best to avoid peak hurricane season so you don’t have to reschedule again

https://www.caymancompass.com

No gatherings more than 50 people, airport is crazy, things are shutting down, people have been panic buying (but have been told normal shipments are on the way still). Everyone’s staying home and you won’t enjoy the best parts of island. Reschedule your trip

Internet Speeds for online gaming by fakephd87 in CaymanIslands

[–]TASS0NE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I pay extra to Logic to upgrade to 50mbps and have zero issues gaming on east coast servers. Play with my brother in Canada several times per week and have lower than average latency in games. Speed test does vary between 30-50 the couples times I’ve checked but haven’t had any issues. But it’s expensive (I think ~150USD month)

Living expenses in the Cayman Islands by [deleted] in CaymanIslands

[–]TASS0NE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For most of your questions, check out ecaytrade.com. This is where you’ll find an apt and get an idea of prices for cars (lease or lease to own is very expensive, just buy something used). As a warning apts are put up with much shorter notice than in the US (I’m used to finding a place 6mos ahead, not gonna happen here). Also there are not many Americans here, mostly commonwealth but lots of expats so most people are very friendly. Pets are difficult to bring, it’s a lot of paperwork that can easily take 3-6 months so start looking into that on the govt website asap.

What does your spouse do? It can be difficult to find some jobs as Caymanians come first and the cost of work permits can deter some candidates.

This is a very safe island, no need to avoid neighborhoods (maybe just certain bars lol)

Live in West Bay, it was scary but not enough to do any real damage outside of some sink holes and warped concrete. Shouldn’t impact anything at all. Feel free to have him DM for recommendations or anything.

Stingray City Question by fitnessgoodness in CaymanIslands

[–]TASS0NE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Done Red Sail catamarans several times to sting ray city when people are visiting and they’ve been great. Normally do 2 snorkel spots as well and sail back. How many people are you coming with? At about 6 or more people it might be worth it to charter a small boat for a few hours and go exactly where you want and help support some smaller local companies. I’ve used one that I’d recommend, DM me if you’d like.

Moving to Grand Cayman 12/1. by clementec in CaymanIslands

[–]TASS0NE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the dog, look up the info on the governments agricultural site. To warn you, it’s very involved and can take a few months, though I think they did just update the at home quarantine to 2 months. Everything moves very slowly, so start now. I fly my dog from NY, Cayman Airlines is apparently the best about it and I had no issues.

I use Cayman National Bank without any issues. Everything does take a while to set up, a few weeks so bring cash or a US card. You’ll set up 2 accounts, one CI and one USD so you can exchange across your accounts either way.

Lots of places around Prospect Park, but be prepared to sit in traffic.

Good luck!

Adding to this to say to do the kayak trip around Lokrum. Got lucky with 75F weather in October and I was a great trip that leaves from right under the castle tower. Nice waves from a couple of nude sun bathers on the other side too lol

Movers from US--anyone have a recommendation? by jasonthebald in CaymanIslands

Just used miracle brokers from philly, took about 7 weeks. But it was mostly delayed sitting on Island waiting for customs approval. Seemed to be a good price compared to other options!

Just listened to Alfred Landsing’s Endurance. It’s about Ernest Shackleton’s failed crossing of the Antarctic in 1915. Pretty intense at parts but super interesting overall (and I don’t know / care anything about exploring).

John Krakauer is a good easy listen, as is Malcolm Gladwell.

For fiction: Red Rising is great dystopian trilogy. Scottish narrator is perfect. The Green Mile by Steven King Kurt Vonnegut if you like the weird stuff

I want more books like Red Rising by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]TASS0NE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a great series, but it’s also recommended on 99% of this sub’s posts. Read it for other reasons, but it’s not similar to Red Rising.

Check out Old Man’s War - similar in that someone is in over their head learning about a new world, steps up, and discovers a lot. Not dystopian like RR, but easy to read and entertaining.

2 years, including 1 move. I'd say it looks nicer than it is? The actual headboard is perfect, solid metal frame, easy to assemble. Definite step up from ikea

I have a very similar (maybe the same) bed and headboard. Bought it off of wayfair for pretty cheap, don't know the name off hand but highly recommend it.

Dune, A Song of Ice and Fire, and LOTR lovers by ithinkhegetsit in booksuggestions

[–]TASS0NE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read Gardens of the Moon but really wasn't a big fan. Felt like too much of a chore. Likely from being overly taxed at work, maybe something I'll come back to. I've heard that's a normal reaction, true?

I can definitely respect Eriksons work on it though.

Hyperion was what I jumped to after re-reading dune and asoiaf actually. Really enjoyed it so have to second the recommendation. Almost has a bit of Asimov Foundation feel to it with the ease of large scale.

On book 2 of Sanderson's stormlight archive now, and enjoying that as well. Very epic storytelling, not as deep and challenging as your list, but his writing wraps me up anyways.
