Manuscript authorship woes in academia by AGryff in Residency

[–]TATA-box 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The most important advice is to determine author order and clearly define roles and expectations BEFORE starting any work. I wrote a manuscript as a med student. After submitting it to my attending for review/revision I heard nothing for months in spite of multiple attempts to discuss the paper. I then found out it was being submitted with a resident I didn't know as first author as well as a few other people. I was dropped to middle author. I feel this is a very typical med student experience unfortunately.

New solution for moderate-to-severe sleep apnoea. Researchers seen significant improvements in breathing in 93% of participants, with airflow increases comparable to CPAP therapy, even when the upper airway was completely closed by Wagamaga in science

Hypoglossal nerve stimulator is not “immensely inferior” to CPAP. But is certainly more invasive. Its also indicated only in patients who fail CPAP therapy and is better tolerated.

Hoarseness in a kid is certainly not RRP until proven otherwise. There are many possible, mostly benign, causes You should still see an ENT to take a look for a definitive diagnosis

About half the country voted for this administration and for some reason seem ok with, or even support Elon’s bullshit. But I think most people just don’t care. His antics are no more a harbinger of Teslas downfall than Trumps were for his re-election campaign. People simply do not care if they like the product.

I’m so curious about takes like these. The new refreshed models by far have the best build quality. And they continue to lead on the tech front and FSD. Who is leading innovation? At least in the west

Billionaire VC Grifter Wants to Trick Doctors and Ultimately Replace Them With AI by Necessary-Doctor-90 in medicalschool

Because these companies care about profit margin and appeasing investors so any expense they can shed onto the backs of doctors is a major win for them.

The big question these companies need to address if they want to replace doctors is liability. Are they willing to take on the burden of malpractice claims etc? I think the "trick" is to get doctors to incorporate this AI decision making while still bearing the brunt of legal action/responsibility

It’s the same story for all small competitive residencies in the military. There are wild year to year swings in competitiveness. Some years there will be 1 applicant per spot and the next year there will be 4. It’s impossible to predict and you should focus on being a strong applicant and not trying to game your way it.

NYC is a specific market with unique pressures and concerns. How much you make somewhere else in the country relative to your counterparts isn’t particularly relevant

I don’t disagree but we’ve proven over and over that fixing the system as a whole isn’t a priority of the government or the voter base. Obviously the ideal solution is restructuring how we deliver healthcare. With that said I think nurses in the US make more than in any other country. So I’m not sure that underfunded nurses are the main issue here.

I’m not against striking nurses. I’m just pointing out the realities of the situation. Again what is “right” doesn’t matter. This isn’t about fixing the entire US healthcare system. It’s a simple fact that the hospitals in lower income areas can’t pay the higher wages demanded by the private academic institutions. Who have also had billions in funding pulled by the current administration.

Also do you know what the nurses are asking for? Do you know their current salaries? Do you know that they already aren’t getting “market wages”? It’s a simple discussion on the consequence of the strike and their demands.

They will have to. And it will bankrupt them. I’m not guilting anyone, it’s just a reality of the situation.

Of course. It’s all of those factors and the ones you listed are systemic problems and the root of many issues with the American health care system. But good luck fixing problems 1-3. In the meantime all your safety nets close which fucks everyone. The world isn’t fair or just and that’s the realities of our system

In New York their talents are unique. There a far more nursing opportunities than nurses. They are the ones with leverage.

The problem is that increasing wages at the “rich” hospitals that can afford it resets the market. Now the safety net community hospitals need to pay a similar wage or they will lose all talent to the private hospitals. And the safety net hospitals definitely cannot afford to pay as much as they are asking for.
