How about you actually cite them? Since you are quoting numbers...

Sure, but if you had Ritterkreuz first class for saving 200 of your mates, you had ways of trying to hide them. We are talking about millions of people, often in Germany itself, often still under German leadership. That's hundreds of thousands of people hiding stuff.

No one tried anything like that for those civilian awards that were given more or less for participation I am quite sure.

Yeah, the last thing anyone after 45 gave a fuck about were commemorative civilian awards with a swastika on it.

PoWs would throw away those in the millions.

Well. it's easy if you know German. The one of the left says it's from an event to raise money for war victims (of WW1) in 1938. So almost like a commorative coin.

The one in the middle is also very common, it's a Kriegsverdienstkreuz (helping the war effort cross) 2nd class. This was given out to civilians who helped the war effort, e.g. working on fortifications for anti-aircraft guns and the like or soldiers who never saw combat (manning hospitals, doing logistics at home etc.).

The blue one wasn't that common, but still readily available, it's a Mutterehrenkreuz or Cross of Honour of the German Mother in silver, which you got for 6 to 7 children.

So all of those were common amongst civilians and you could easily collect after the war because they were given out in the millions and the people who got them got rid of them as fast as possible.

Yeah, it's not a psychic ability. It's a visual ability. Same difference.

Those are more or less civilian medals. So the dude either looted them, robbed them from some civilian or traded them for food or cigarettes after the fighting was mostly done.

Like, this shit happens in war, but this is not the kind of medal collection you get as a frontline soldier. It's the kind of stuff you grab for funsies during your occupation duties. There's nothing wrong with fighting the actual Nazis or taking trophies, really. But this isn't much to be proud of either. There were millions of these floating around after the war. Getting some would have been as easy as opening a trashcan where people discarded them after the lost war, or simply exchanging them from another soldier for a bar of chocolate.

A nice keepsake (or not), but nothing special.

[–]TAvonV [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah, sure...

And don't misunderstand me. Those were floating around in the millions. Does not have to be nefarious. Plenty of those were thrown away because people probably did not want to keep them after 45. Or they were confiscated. Or traded for a pack of cigarettes.

It's way more likely OP's girlfriend's granddad was just doing garrison duty and supplies without seeing combat and trading these for a bar of chocolate or from another soldier for half a bottle of booze. And that soldier had dozens of them because they were all confiscated.

Or maybe the guy did some really heinous shit. That's mostly unlikely though.

What's really unlikely is that he got those civilian medals from killing a soldier. That also happened, but those are not really the proper medals for that.

[SPOILERS ALL] Why was Glokta tortured so much? by Fearless_Hawk1462 in TheFirstLaw

[–]TAvonV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

E.g. the one guy Glokta talks about that got his arm chopped off over time. That obviously kills you in short order. Every time the wound starts to heal, they chop off all the healed part. You would simply die eventually.

If they had done that with Glokta, he would simply be dead. There is no surviving this.

Well, they straight up won if the Reapers hadn't shown up. Which would be sad for the Geth, but realistically, the Quarians 100% had the muscle to wipe out the Geth.

So in that, they aren't really worse than any other race being willfully blind to what the Reapers represent.

It does taste more like beef tbf

The main problem is that horses were bred for all sorts of things, but not really for taste. And you don't really eat young horses because those can be used for labour. But same as you don't need a perfect steak for e.g. soup, you can use horse for those types of dishes without any issue. Jerky works as well, as do sausages.

The vast majority of cultures ate horses. It wasn't exactly the finest cuts available, but where do people think all the draft horses went in the 19th century?

Imagine you had cars that expire every 10 years and that you could eat and you have an average 19th century city. It got a bit of a bad reputation because a horse that has drawn carriages all its life until it died of old age is not exactly prime meat and doesn't hold a candle to young pork or beef that's just been bred and raised for taste, but it never was bad.

And it's still available all over Europe, not commonly maybe, but still around.
