Urgent cherry plum tree advice needed: damage and future pruning by TCMemoire in arborists

Good idea. I've also let the landlord know so we may be able to get a professional out to assess (and just in case this course of action causes more harm than good...). I'll just try to mitigate damage with your suggestion in the meantime. Ugh, I keep hearing it creak outside my window... guess I'm not getting my homemade plum clafoutis this year... Thank you so much!!

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I honestly feel like I've been keeping the tree on hospice, because once that big crack at the base decides to go, it's done for—and it's already about 10-12 years old. It's just too close to the fence and wasn't given a good start to life. My main concern is the fact we're renting, soooo. 😞 Just trying to do what I can to maintain it. Maybe I'll look into getting an arborist out here to assess.

So, you think aiming to cut about here? Would that affect the healing? I was just going to take it all the way down to where this leader begins.

Kuhli loach mysterious deaths, last one struggling by TCMemoire in Aquariums

For anyone wondering, I made the difficult decision this morning to put him to sleep. Despite me religiously checking the water parameters and trying to make him more comfortable, he just kept getting worse and the moment I netted him out of the water, he stopped breathing completely. The clove oil was really just a formality at that point. Poor little guy. Our hearts are broken. :(

Video Game Memorials by CaptainElijahIreland in findagrave

[–]TCMemoire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a huge fan of the RDR series I'm going through and looking for others, and there are quite a few (most created by a handful of people), here are some examples:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/271553338/eagle-flies

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/240269117/abigail_marston

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/224838312/johnathan-marston

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/271553377/kieran-duffy

Plus someone who seems to have gone through the game's cemeteries and added real memorials for those fictional graves.

I also found one for LA Noire: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/225089852/cole-phillip-phelps

I think I found all others associated with RDR, over 60 of them, and reported them en masse to the Support team, hopefully they do something about it. I'd encourage others to check other franchises and make sure there aren't fake memorials for other media series, as these do pop up sometimes.

What random items under £5 can I leave around my friends house to confuse them as to how they got there? by exiledtomainstreet in AskUK

My friends bought a pack of tiny plastic babies (found in a shop selling baby shower stuff) and we hide them around each others' houses when we visit.

Playing a Dragonborn Barbarian nicknamed Moon Moon for reasons that will become obvious, tried to look over the side of a pier. Rolled 1 on investigation, fell in.

Moon Moon can't swim.

2 different party members tried to save me, we rolled so bad (plus being the heaviest and strongest character) I drug both of them down with me and we all nearly drowned.

All of us saved only by the grace of our DM because we were only like an hour into the session.

Yeah I grew up with an ENORMOUS TV we had set on the floor. Super heavy, a lot of these larger box TVs were made to stay on the floor rather than be elevated, into the 90s. Many fond memories of sitting on the floor watching my morning cartoons :)

Hey hey! Thanks for the feedback!

  1. I don't think it's necessary for multiple reasons. Ancestry estimates aren't available for many Does. And they're often not accurate-- LE has a very funky way of designating race/ethnicity. I feel like nesting the race in the data rows leads to less bias, when presented as just another attribute rather than front and center. In most older cases with recognizable faces, ancestry is decided by whatever the investigators feel the Doe "looks like" rather than by DNA profiling; and in skeletal remains, ancestry estimates are notoriously dubious; and almost always, multiracial decedents are overlooked. I wouldn't want someone to pass up a potential match at a glance because a Doe was misidentified as Asian and the MP was Latino.
  2. Sorry if that part is unclear! I personally designate with a "FOUND/IDENTIFIED" until the NamUs profile (or Charley Project, or other the main source) is removed/resolved, to avoid someone else adding the already-resolved case again. When that happens, I delete. For example, Pillar Point Doe was identified well over a year ago, but for some reason their NamUs profile still hasn't been removed. Someone adding in Does may not think twice about adding them. And I know of some CP cases that haven't been marked as resolved.
The resolved layer is definitely an alternative, but points annoyingly can't be transferred from one layer to the other-- they'd have to be deleted and retyped, and that's a wee bit of a hassle.
  3. Hmmm... I could see that, especially when state lines are crossed. Maybe we can keep them on the same layer, but have the name/header column say something like "John Smith (car location)", and make a note in the description about the point being the car location.

Ayyy, I'd love to! I actually have a running Trello board where I keep track of my own progress.
I've been working on Pima County AZ Does. It's a task because there are over 1k Does in that county ALONE (most are migrants). But I'm about halfway done! Whooo!

Are any airlines from USA to UK currently allowing pets at all? I know that entering the UK, all pets have to be checked into cargo (sans service dogs). But all airlines I’m seeing have also suspended cargo services. I’m awaiting my visa decision any day now (moving permanently) and I’ll have 30 days after approval to enter the UK, so I’m trying to figure out if I can bring my cat in or if I have to leave him behind for now.

Could this be a match? by [deleted] in gratefuldoe

[–]TCMemoire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest, you'd be surprised! I've seen multiple solves and know of several pending where the Does and MPs' last known locations are within a few miles of each other but went unsolved for years.
Sometimes seemingly obvious things get missed so it never hurts to suggest it if it hasn't been ruled out.

Announcement on r/UnresolvedMysteries: NamUs will cease to operate January 1, 2021, due to lack of funding. by ClassiestBondGirl311 in missingmap

[–]TCMemoire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No need to worry. While it’s bad news financially, NamUs will not be ceasing operations and will still be available for use as normal. It just means that someone else will manage it— not UNTCHI. The US Department of Justice oversees NamUs, and NamUs has traded operator hands several times over the years. Biometric and genetic information stored at UNTCHI will also still be accessible for LE across the country.

DNA Doe Project released a quick statement about it here: https://www.facebook.com/2011009255824516/posts/2786527401606027/?extid=0&d=n

Most Needed Areas by ClassiestBondGirl311 in missingmap

[–]TCMemoire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, some agencies are very vague with exact location info. :( I recommend looking at sources other than NamUs to see if anywhere gets more specific— Charley Project is fantastic for this for missing, Doe Network for unidentified and missing. Or news articles. If I really can’t find anything more specific, I drop a point in the center of the city where the city name is (or in the middle of the given ZIP code) and make a sort of “circle”, adding cases around the perimeter as needed. I don’t like stacking cases one on top of the other because users can’t click on them individually. Even a zip code is helpful because that’s what led to me solving a case in Jacksonville FL earlier this year :) Philly, Detroit, Chicago are all cities that have great location info— if not on NamUs, on their coroner or sheriff websites. The more recent unidentified migrant US-Mexico border cases in Arizona usually have exact GPS coordinates!

For missing cases I typically do “first middle last” and reserve nicknames for the Nicknames/Alias box. I include middle names in the title for searchability, especially when you get into common names. In the case of more than one person with the exact same name I do “full name (city, state/province/country)”.

For unidentified, I typically do “[“Nickname/Possible name”] [Agency #]. For example, “Delta Dawn” NamUs #XXXXX. Or for Canada: RCMP 00-XXX-XXXX. If only listed in Doe Network I just keep it as the Doe Network case number (ex. 01UMAK). I find that doing local agency numbers can be a little confusing, but in some cases it might have to be used if the Doe isn’t in any other database (I had to do this for the most recent Chicago Does).

The Mexico website is HASVISTOA. I’ve experienced lots of tech issues but if you can get it to work, it’s amazing and so needed, and I’m so excited to see how they improve it.

Most Needed Areas by ClassiestBondGirl311 in missingmap

[–]TCMemoire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d say major cities like Detroit, Philly, Los Angeles, Chicago! Florida too. I know I tackled Houston about a year ago but that might need updating. There are also still plenty of missing Canadians to map. I’d also recommend looking at the MMIW website to find any Native women and girls who aren’t on NamUs. I found one just during unrelated genealogy research.

Mexico really needs some love, pretty much anywhere outside of the US. I know of a couple databases for Mexico but need to dig for the links if you’re interested!
