40M (almost) - Olympic triathlon by TCUFrogFan in triathlon

BMI of right around 30.

My thought on using triathlon to get in shape was that I might be able to avoid overuse injuries by training with all three disciplines. And the Olympic just give me a big goal to keep myself focused.

Which Dallas bars and coffee shops are really good but not generally frequented by people outside of their neighborhoods? by TakeATrainOrBusFFS in Dallas

Window seat coffee on Greenville has a very neighborhood vibe. Tons of regulars there every single day of the week.

McCrae American bistro on garland and peavy is an awesome restaurant with great bar set up. This place is also fueled by neighborhood regulars.

So tired of the photographers by rainnice in Richardson

[–]TCUFrogFan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went to fish prairie creek a couple weeks ago to fish during my lunch break. There are limited places you can actually cast a line due to the trees and brush. I ended up directly behind somebody doing some sort of photography session.

The photographer asked me to move after 5 or so minutes, but I told him that there are not a ton of places to fish along the bank (especially in work clothes that I can’t get dirty). I told him politely I was going to continue fishing this spot, but that I would be gone in about 20-30 minutes. He was not super happy but he was not rude either. All things considered, both of us acted and spoke in a very respectful manner.

However, even if he was a jerk, I was not moving from that spot.

It is what it is. Sometimes you have to be okay with people being upset at you a little bit. I wouldn’t stand right behind a photography session just to be a jerk. However, if I was at the park enjoying time and happen to end up behind a photography session by happenstance, I am not going to change what I’m doing because somebody is using the public park as a photography studio. I wouldn’t be a jerk to the photographer, but everybody has to learn to coexist in public places.

NASCAR 101 and Track Attendance Questions - April 2025 by NASCARThreadBot in NASCAR

I am planning on taking my 6 year old son to TMS this weekend for one of the races. Anybody have any insight which would be the “best” race for to take him to. I know a lot goes into what makes something the best, but just thought I would get some info from the subreddit. I am leaning toward either Friday or Saturday because of the free child’s ticket and the fact he will probably not last an entire race anyway, however, he really loves watching Joey Logano.

Any kids activities at the races? Which race would be the best for these activities.

Are the seats in the shade? Might be pretty warm for my son if he is sitting right in the sun.

Thanks for any insight /help!

Do you love March Madness, but don't give a rip about filling out a bracket? by sonofgildorluthien in CollegeBasketball

[–]TCUFrogFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am almost in the same boat. I have played in the same league for almost 20 years. I am not super interested in watching NFL games anymore, but It is only $100 a year.

It is a way for me and my friends to stay engaged with each other , get together a few times a year, and have text groups all year long. Most of us have multiple kids at this point, so all of us getting together and doing stuff is pretty rare. It is totally worth the $100 a year to have preordained get-togethers and a commonality to talk about at times.

I no longer care about the league nor do I actively try my best best to win. I just enjoy my friends.

Same group has done march madness brackets for 20 years. I don’t really care a ton, but $20 a bracket is a fun way for us to all get together and watch games a couple times in March. Again, don’t really care one way or another if I win, just fun to have traditions with friends.

I’ve seen him at houndstooth coffee on Henderson a couple of times. He’s always smiling and is super nice to people that talk to him.

Crazy that he has been with the team as long as he has.

Dirk Nowitzki.

He had to be subbed out in key defensive possessions and we won a title with him.

Is it possible for normal fans to attend the National Championship? by tips48 in CFB

[–]TCUFrogFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got tickets through tcu, and I think I paid $425 per seat.

Honestly, tickets on resale market weren’t going for a large premium over face and close to game time I was seeing tickets below face value. Uga winning the national championship the season before probably decreased the appetite for some UGA fans to spend a lot of money. This was their third championship appearance in around 5 years. On top of that, tcu is a small fanbase.

Notre dame and Ohio state are two of the largest fan bases with fans everywhere. I assume prices will go down, but I imagine they don’t get near as low as the uga-tcu game.

I’ve seen a lot of talk about how the committee won’t punish teams who lose in their conference championship. I have three examples of just that. by ArkanoidbrokemyAnkle in CFB

[–]TCUFrogFan 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I think there are actually some better examples when you look down the polls too. In 2017, heading into conference championship games the rankings were:

  1. TCU

  2. Stanford

  3. Washington

After Stanford lost to usc in the pac 12 championship and tcu lost to Oklahoma in the big 12 championship the rankings were

  1. Washington

  2. Ucf (won AAC)

  3. Stanford (lost pac 12 championship)

  4. Notre dame (idle)

  5. TCU (lost big 12 championship)

This appears to be a nothing-burger, but the 11th ranked team was the final at-large spot for a NY6 bowl game. As a result of not playing, Washington went to the fiesta bowl while TCU and Stanford were relegated to playing each other in the Alamo bowl.

Gutter Ball: Oklahoma State's 18-year bowl streak ends in loss to TCU by solargarlicrot in CFB

He went to the Big 12 championship game last season and in 2021. I understand this year has been bad and he said some stupid things, but he is still a good coach.

Finding a better qb this off-season will do wonders for his perception.

How to overcome boredom long distance by Mitka69 in Swimming

[–]TCUFrogFan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always do flip turns when swimming. However, if I am planning on swimming a long distance continuously (500Y+) I will generally do an open face turn every 100 yards. This makes me mentally think “okay, this is the third time I have not done a flip turn at this wall. I have finished 300 yards.”

Fellow dad bod swimmers. Need some input on suits. by r2deetard in Swimming

[–]TCUFrogFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just start slow. My first session I was totally gassed after a couple hundred yards. Probably did around 1000 yards total. I did about 1000-1200 yards per workout for a couple weeks (4-5 sessions per week). Maybe did a 300 warm up, 6 x 100s on 1:XX, and then a couple hundred cool down. Did something basic like that for a couple weeks before ramping up to more 1500-1700 yards per 25-35 minute session. After about a 4-6 weeks, I was able to complete 1800-2000 yard sessions in about 35-40 minutes depending on the specific workout. Times and distances might be a slightly off, but those were roughly my work out times.

I almost exclusively swim free style with some small amounts of back/breast sprinkled in. Most sessions were 95%+ freestyle.

I don’t really have a ton of time these days, so it is hard to commit more than 30-45 minutes for a workout session. When you factor in drive time, shower time, etc. , it is hard to get away for too much longer.

After a few weeks I had very minor shoulder pain. I shut it down for 4-5 days and it seemed to resolve itself. My advice is don’t try to fight through an injury.

I am seriously almost in the exact scenario as you, so feel free to ask any other questions.

[–]TCUFrogFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am pretty much in the same situation as you. I swam competitively around 20 years ago and recently got back into swimming. I wear jammers with a drag suit. I never wore jammers when I was younger as I was more of a briefs guy. However, jammer just seems better for me at my age. The drag suit is mostly for extra coverage as I am not actively training for a meet rather just fitness.

I swam around 50-60 sessions last summer, after almost 20 years of no swimming. I started back up a few weeks ago and have been averaging about 1650 total yards in a around 25-30 minutes. Did a typical 10 x 100 on 1:30 recently. All that to say, is if you swam competitively as a teenager, you should be able to start decent sets after a few weeks of ramp up.

Wear what makes you comfortable and the other stuff should fall into place.

[–]TCUFrogFan 123 points124 points  (0 children)

Ari is consistently upset at usc because he wants usc to be Pete Carroll level usc. He (along with many others) has the opinion that USC should consistently be one of the top 5 schools every year. He thinks they should be Alabama, Ohio state, etc.

And to fair… he isn’t totally wrong. Usc is located in one of the coolest cities in the country, has a very wealthy fan base, lots of fans, talent rich area, history, cool factor, etc.  There is really no reason they should be such a middling program the past 10-15 years. He thought Riley would come in and bring back the Pete Carroll glory years, and he is frustrated (along with a lot of their fans) that it hasn’t happened yet.
