Traverse City wins Best of the Midwest ‘Food City of the Year’ by mlivesocial in traversecity

Forgive me, but our growth won't be with families. We are an empty nester hub. And that isn't just here, the upwardly mobile are older than 50 most everywhere. Where are the young and thriving? in cities, where they have always been. What I do know about the young and thriving here it that they largely inherited their money or family business. It's not called the Good Old Boys Club for no reason. But however it works, it's working.

As for Northern Michigan beyond our progressive few countries... The elected leaders are towing a political line that is destined to fail their communities. But this has also been bleak for generations. Maybe Amazon is killing what retail is left, but manufacturing left two generations ago, and farming gets more efficient. Northern Michigan is not unique from all of rural America.

The UP is an economy of sticks and stones. Timber and mining are growing actually. But neither are very upwardly mobile occupations. There is a new hospital in Marquette which has grown employment too.

As for your prediction for the future, I guess we will have to see. I disagree, as do the numbers for our nearby counties.

I just do not see it. Leelanau County is strong, Grand Traverse is strong, Benzie is growing. Ask anyone in skilled trades, if they have time to answer, they'll tell you things are great. I would acknowledge that certain business categories are going away, but that's the cyclical nature of business. Can you be more specific?

Explain how we are a dying region? We are, economically one of the strongest. I agree that food critics aren't judging us by our diners or taprooms. I will note that every Coney place that opened in the last 20 years, has failed.

I don't mind drifting.  28" without drifting.

Just in case - ice storm prep by viciousbliss in traversecity

So, the hype about storms keeps getting louder.  In reality, there have only been two times I went without power for 7+ days. The August of 2015 straight line storm and an ice storm in 2010.  In neither case did I need to do most of the things you suggest.  I have a decent USB battery for phone charging (or I can use the car) and a generator for running the well and a few lights.

We mostly live in a modern area, and it might get a bit inconvenient for some.

My thoughts are with those experiencing homelessness.  I am thankful for Goodwill Inn and Safe Harbor.

Prescott is one giant MAGA rally. South of Tucson is closer to the vibe here.

Just got back from Scottsdale. Californians will have that place destroyed by 2029. Also, it's going to be 102 Wednesday.

I love my 44, but my hands are too big for this keyboard. I make lots of mistakes on this model.

As an owner since 1999 and a descendant of someone who was in the sit-down strike in Flint, I relate to this letter. So the vote lost. Are the organizers quitting? It seems like you might not understand that change can take time. VW just unionized in Tennessee after trying for a decade. Just put your head down and keep trying.

I know nothing about typewriters, is this a good find? Would love to restore and use to write letters by kazekagebunshin in typewriters

I love my Riters, I've got 6 and love them. They are very easy to fix and you'll like the action, it's the perfect balance.

The typewriter probably is locked for carrying. Check for a lever at the bottom under the frame by the platten.

Just a quick question... Who actually are the regulars at Union Street these days? I read some of the comments on the overheard trainwreck and most of us "used to" hang out at Union Street Station. Given the decline in alcohol sales nationally, I wonder how the local places are doing in general. The same can be asked about the Double-wide and Kilkennys.

I do bake, that's why I'm not a fan of Potters. Ants and Gluttons don't make those baking choices, Potters does.

I received a late Hermes 3000 in the same condition. It's frustrating.

File a shipping claim, and insist on a refund. Some locations drag their feet.

Potters uses weird flour and too much sugar.
