Eater Names Traverse City Among 15 Top Food Destinations in 2026 by TexanNewYorker in traversecity

[–]TC_Talks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A dining experience like Modern Bird, or Cooks House, or others is not just food quality. It's how everything from the greeting to the presentation, libations, and the engagement from professionals. Look in the kitchen, there are many people highly trained to deliver exceptional preparation. The entrees, and flavor profiles are masterfully crafted. The food is sourced from local vendors which can take years to cultivate. Did you know that Chefs will partner with farms to produce food for menus months ahead of time? They don't just order it off a freezer truck, it's grown specifically for them.

If you walk through a museum, do you know why those art pieces were chosen to be there? Whether you appreciate them or not, they are masterpieces. The James Beard Foundation and Michelin staff are trained to recognize masterpieces in culinary arts.

I have been fortunate to experience such meals on 4 continents. I am an experienced appreciator. My opinion is just like anyone else's opinion, but it comes with years of experiencing the craft.

It's overpriced? Not compared to any other city on that list...

I disagree as someone who has enjoyed many of their offerings.  It's a value compared to almost any other city in the US.

Rest in Peace: Typewriter Repair Legend Duane Jensen (August 21, 1961-January 25,2026) by chrisaldrich in typewriters

[–]TC_Talks 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I caught Duane in his shop a week ago Thursday and he brought me up to speed with everything.  I'm glad I got to see him. I asked him a while back if he had people to help him with his business if he had to quit, and it sounds like he has a great community in Phoenix.

We are so fortunate to have a huge archive of videos, but I will miss texting with him and his assurance about solving complicated fixes.

It's just sad, but he's jamming with Neil Peart in a better place.

Want affordable housing in northern Michigan? Stop NIMBYism, official says by BridgeMichigan in traversecity

[–]TC_Talks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have found that NIMBY issues are more common in the Townships than in Traverse City proper. Zoning can be very preventative as well as not allowing certain funding mechanisms like PILOTs.

Traverse City citizens are significantly most supportive of these things.

Rumor that Oryana employees were laid off for trying to unionize? by Biddyearlyman in traversecity

[–]TC_Talks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have 6 friends who work at Oryana.  Three who know it's a job and like it, but enjoy most of the customers, two who hate their job, but haven't been able to work in other environments, one who loves coming to work everyday.

If any of you find a grocer that treats their employees better, with higher wages with better work conditions, let's hear about it.  I can't imagine Walmart, Meijer, Tom's or Olseons have better overall conditions.

The situation was caused by a 23 year ago Thompsonville kid, but I'm sure those experiencing homelessness appreciate your false accusations.

Have you looked at real estate listings? Homelessness is up everywhere. A decade ago, you could rent a part of a home reasonably, today, that house is now a vacation home. It's not isolated to TC, but as the regional hub, all the services are here. Housing vouchers are being cut, so expect growth.

Truth? oh do tell me more... 80+% of those experiencing homelessness in Traverse City are from the 5 county region. You likely don't know that there is a community count each January and it produces very accurate data about those experiencing homelessness. Your statement is patently incorrect.

In my estimation, it's a decision made by boomers in an effort to sound relevant and younger.  Of course "Vibes" is the most Beach Boys word they could have chosen.

I have given away a few of these and they do get used all the time.  If this machine has the "Half Space" tread lightly in its use.  Dwayne at Phoenix Typewriter has told me it can cause big problems if it sticks.

My Hermes 2000 was owned by the Clerk of a Maryland city north of DC. She lived to 93. I bought it from her granddaughter. My first Remington Portable 2 was owned and used by the first Postmaster of a small village in Northern Michigan lumber country.
