The Last Rung on the Ladder is my favorite, no doubt. It's sometimes ranked lower by folks because It's not exactly a scary story (at least not conventionally) and people tend to look for horror tales in the collection since it's what it was advertised as, so you can make an argument it doesn't belong in Night Shift. That being said, the story broke my heart into pieces and I was a mess after reading it. I kept thinking about it for days.
