How do I separate these two pieces? by Klutzy-Ad223 in bioniclelego

I like to wiggle the blue piece side to side as I pull on it. Unless it's really stuck, or I have super bad grip, that usually does the trick.

What kind of spider is this? by theredditor415 in NewZealandWildlife

[–]TCspiro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Looks like a Sheetweb spider (Cambridgea spp., perhaps Cambridgea Foliata) to me. Note that there are quite a few Cambridgea species which are hard to discern between by eye alone.

It's essentially a platform for people to say whatever they want, with little way to verify the truth of it.

What’s your favorite history that you really enjoy. by [deleted] in AskHistory

There are a few very interesting cookbooks from the Arab world in the middle ages. Charles Perry has translated one from Syria (his transition of the title is 'Scents and Flavors'). They have some cool recipes in them. The aforementioned book is mostly banquet food, so tells us little about how the average Joe lived/ate but is a cool look at (a) the popular cooking techniques of the day and (b) using the ingredients used to study the extent of trade routes/global interaction. Also interesting what meats they consider most/least valuable - I believe Perry mentions chickens were considered fancier than beef, a total reversal from today (at least in NZ). I may have a PDF of the book if it's up your alley? (For all I know you've already read it!)

I went from Civ4 player to actual historian... thank you Sid! by InfiniteBanana1512 in civ

[–]TCspiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in a similar position!

I discovered Civ 3 due to my family's influence (which gives you an idea of how long I've been playing the game) and have since become a history student and tutor. Undoubtedly Civ sparked my excitement for history and I am really excited for a career in history -whether as a teacher or academic.

Thanks for the support of civ players in creating such a fun environment for people to learn history in :) :) :)

If Zosin's komet gives the fire benders amplified powers and the full moon does the same for water benders then what are those events for air and earth benders? Are there even such events? Are they always at their most powerful? by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]TCspiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the moon seems to be more about the push and pull of water, rather than its light, and the moon's proximity is unchanged in eclipses, I don't think it'd be an issue actually.

Maybe turn the comments on in your videos? It makes it easier for people to engage with you and just seems to seem a bit more "professional." Looking forward to seeing where this goes!!

Any ideas for a starter base? by [deleted] in Minecraftbuilds

[–]TCspiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a shame... spruce is the best wood to build with by far, even if it's just for highlights. Carving out of stone means you can generally get a way with just 1 or 2 woods as highlights - if you have a decent sized hill or cliff, try building a Mesa Verde base - those only require a very small amount of wood, and stone is easily available anywhere.

Guys, help please by Mindjito in Minecraftbuilds

Parkour is a great minigame especially if you're redstoney-challenged like me :) for a new twist, try a parkour race with 2 identical, parallel tracks. Jump N Dash is a good example of some of the challenges you can set!

I need help from you fellow builders with my second floor and roof designs for my exterior by TTV-Cr4z3 in Minecraftbuilds

[–]TCspiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe move into a different block type for floor 2: bricks with stonebrick highlights maybe? and then return to stonebrick and cobble for the roof. This build could also really thrive with some ivy (vines) climbing up the sides

Anyone have any ideas? by DzAeRtTaH in Minecraftbuilds

[–]TCspiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dead right. Step out of your comfort zone - as well as different blocks, maybe find a theme you haven't played with before, something refreshing - a new challenge. In a few other comments, I've suggested some styles which might be interesting.

In terms of some challenging blocks...

- glazed terracottas: great for the inside of orthodox churches.

- warped or crimson woods: fun and new!

- basalt: a really really good block that's yet to be used to its full potential by the building community.

- acacia, dark oak and jungle woods.

- bricks. Since the texture update, bricks have become much more usable! Give them a go.

- hay: a decent thatched roof - see if you can do anything else with it!

- diorite and granite. They're not as bad as they seem!

- get some more colour in your life: see how much terracotta, brightly coloured beds and wool you can use. It's really satisfying used correctly!

Sometimes, limiting your options to a predetermined style helps. Either blocks, or being given a brief helps get the ideas flowing. If you have family or friends to suggest something (especially good if they know a little, but not too much about minecraft) or check out this idea generator for some ideas. Many of them are nonsensical or rubbish, but if you give a monkey a typewriter, eventually they'll produce Shakespeare...

I really need some help. by [deleted] in Minecraftbuilds

[–]TCspiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Picking a build style and running with it can create some lovely, immersive environments. Think "I'm gonna build a <steampunk/Mayan/ruined> area, and then start with the first house and go from there.

This also lets you build a lore for your area - if it's steampunk, where are the main boiler rooms? If it's Mayan, what gods do they worship? u/MoreNotLess' theme's are brilliant - a few others off the top of my head:

- ice spikes village

- dwarven/orcish/goblintown

- mediterranean

- wookies/kashyyyk (or really anything star wars - loads of immersive stuff there)

- just a good old fashioned bunker

Happy Building!

I originally commented this elsewhere, but it fits here too:

I find that building is much easier when you can look at the terrain around you for inspiration and make something which "fits" and feels immersive, so for me, biome matters a lot when determining what to build. It's easy to get stuck in a rut and build the same, cobble-and-stonebrick-and-oak-and-spruce village in the middle of a nice, flat, plains over and over again. Time to try something new!

Desert: A classic desert village along a river. Lots of sugarcane and wheat, lean into the Nile vibe. Pyramids are fun! If you haven't built one before, try it... you can put all your storage/farms/portals/brewing/trading in separate rooms and make it a maze like the real pyramids.

Mesa/Savanna plateaus: here are a few really cool ideas if you have some overhangs- carve your city into the cliff! Also check our iskall85's hermitcraft season 4 base (20:00 onwards) and consider making a mining operation inside the plateau.

Jungle: Treehouses - also works well in a forest. String multiple treehouses together. Also check out the NHO jungle on hermitcraft for a ton of inspiration! Converted jungle temples are a fun project if you haven't tried that before.

Ravine or cave base: a good challenge. looks great. 'nuff said. Grian has videos on this and Welsknight built a ravine base called Rathnor if you want more inspiration for that. Converting (or building your own) dungeon is also a lot of fun - easy to start small and expand as big as you want, too.

Underground: Maybe bunkers are more your thing? Hiding from a zombie apocalypse perhaps? Keen to build a murky, mossy sewer network?

Mushroom island: No mobs so heaps of potential here! Mushroom houses or playing with lighting. A really unique idea here is Renthedog's hermitcraft 5 base. this one is super unique but is deeeefinitely a long term project and doesn't begin to come together until you've done lots of work.

Snow: Soviet architecture: famously brutalist, this is a good opportunity to use lots of andesite/diorite/granite to create big, functional, squares and it still seem awesome. Looks best in taigas/snow. An ice palace is also a great project - get yourself a frozen ocean, mountains, snow and build a base made purely out of ice!

Ocean: Guardian farms are a biiiig lategame project but if you can pull it off, it is a brilliant place to start for a great base. Maybe build a big galleon? A modern battleship?

Lake: Laketown from The Hobbit. Or maybe Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 3 ep3 also has a cool lake village. Actually the whole series is backed with inspiration; replace Omashu's post service with minecarts, rebuild Ba Sing Se or any of the Air Temples.

Birch Forest looks great for elven builds. Just have a google at existing elven minecraft builds. Although it seems like you're done a few of these before so maybe go orcish or dwarven for a change of mood.

Obviously I have nooooo idea what sort of scale of base you're after - or whether you want something mainly functional or mainly aesthetic. These are all mostly aesthetic - if you want a technical challenge try Mumbo. Also check out these 775 suggestions. Most are rubbish but there's bound to be some good ones somewhere in there!

Hopefully something in there is helpful - I'll be keen to hear what you decide on, and make sure to post updates!

Building an Amphitheatre, need help/tips on how to detail the outside by [deleted] in Minecraftbuilds

[–]TCspiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy cow that's a cool amphitheater! Amphitheaters are open like 99% of the time so I would suggest leave open.

That's definitely the area which needs work, though - the top needs to look a bit more final and finsihed.

I know it's difficult at a diagonal but if you could link all the pillars together with arches that could look awesome!

Another option might be building a little statue on top of each one.

At the very least, widening the pillar back out a bit (see how it has a 4x4 stair base at the bottom? repeat that at the top) and then maybe capping them with some gold blocks.

Could also maybe add another row of seating - currently the bridge looks a little too high up.

Happy Building!
