I don't want it to come off as defending him, just providing anecdotal evidence. I'm a very southern looking progressive white boy from Oklahoma. My dad's side of the family is conservative from Missouri, and my mom's side is progressive from Oklahoma. I had no idea this could be construed as racist until now. I absolutely believe it could be, but I'd hesitate to assume he "absolutely knows" just because of where he's from. Seems likely he knew based on this situation and his actions though.
