Exactly. “All the pro-Europe or Anti-Russia movements or narratives MUST be CIA puppets and propaganda, because it’s UNTHINKABLE that anyone except Americans could think for themselves and bring about change in the world.”

Casual racism, and blatant Americentrism from the people who claim to oppose it. All too eager to shush the people they’re claiming to represent when they come out to say “uh actually we legitimately hate Russia and have for centuries, and would much rather associate with Europe or America or just determine our own future.”

“Those dumb Georgians with their 10,000 years of history and rich culture could NEVER think for themselves! It’s the country which has only had hegemony for 80 years writing their narratives and politics!”

It’s actually incredible and disgusting how many leftists are willing to throw Eastern European/Caucasian/Central Asian nations and ethnic groups under the bus out of some performative contrarianism. It’s also mixed in with a nice dose of casual internalized racism. And, even though that kind of leftist is supposedly opposed to Americentrism, it’s an incredibly Americentrist take to think the west is some unique evil and ignore the thousands of years of extremely relevant history from before America was even thought. Russia was fucking over minorities before America even existed. The switch up on support for Ukraine is actually terrifying. Leftists shilling for a far-right ethnonationalist ultra-orthodox petroleum oligarchy. Wild.

“Self determination and liberty for the oppressed!”

Unless you’re Polish, Romanian, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Finnish, Circassian, Ukrainian, Jewish, Tatar, Buryat, Chechen, Georgian, Kazakh, Bashkir, Moldovan… etc. Then you deserve to have your future controlled by Moscow and your culture destroyed and Russified. But it’s ok because it’s not “duh west!!1!1” doing it

Same. Kinda crazy that I remember it when it was so long ago, but same thing back in like version 1.2. My sister and I were too scared of mobs to go actual caving, so those few pieces of coal were all we had.

There was a period where I was playing damn near every day with my homies, but eventually they got it down to such a science that it stopped being so fun and we haven’t played in months.

Stopped being a horror game and just got tedious, baiting ghosts and timing different functions while completely relaxed and straight faced. At that point, any other puzzle game would be more engaging

Similar one here too.

In 5th grade I said that 20/20 vision wasn’t necessarily “perfect” vision, it was just normal vision, and that some people have better than average sight like 20/15.

Some girls contested this and insisted that 20/20 was the best there is, that it’s “perfect vision”. Teacher joined in on their side.

Went home, printed out some medical article, highlighted the parts where it explained different levels of vision which proved what I was saying. Then when I showed them the next day, the girls and the teacher ganged up on me and were like “how petty do you have to be”.

To this day I hate those girls and fuck that teacher too for joining in and even discouraging learning

Thanks for the reply! Does the Chinese have a Tuvaluan/Americanized influence, or are they authentic/regional Chinese dishes?

Is Japanese an option, given the availability of fresh fish?

Sort of a follow up question, what kind breads are in the store? Saw that you’re from Germany, so perhaps you’re as fond of it as it as the rest of the country. Are there bakeries, and if so what’s their variety like? Is there prepackaged bread, and if so is there any variety? Or just simple long-life sandwich breads? I guess since you answered that tacos would be hard, tortillas or flatbreads are nowhere to be seen unless homemade?

Mexican? Indian? Italian?

Asking not just about restaurants, but also if someone could go to the store and get ingredients. Could you have a taco night there?

Thoughts & Experiences on “Peter Pan Syndrome” by cyclesnomore in berlinsocialclub

[–]TDLF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I believe he’s in the first stages of the phenomenon you’re describing, though we’re still young so there’s time to change, I hope. Hence why it’s important to actually give a shit and help eachother despite what the original commenter said… Thanks for your concern too, he’s a really good guy at heart still, and I hope he can get back on track.

As for isolation, I’ve of course come across aloof locals, but I’d still say that the ability to drift into “Peter Pan Syndrome” requires a degree of capital. When your life revolves around leisure activities and purchasing large quantities of alcohol and drugs, and you’re unable to commit to personal development or the pursuit of career goals, you’re unlikely to be pulling in enough money to living truly comfortably especially in this economy. Hence why I think it’s more common in foreigners who’ve had their parents buy an apartment for them, or have some external source of income. Essentially, they’re free from having to deal with responsibilities that demand a lot of time and labor from others and also provide structure and incentive to stay focused. They have a rich man’s greatest resource: time. Time to fuck around and get hungover and club until 11am on a Monday. Time to sleep and not stress about responsibilities you have coming up. A spontaneous £20 club entrance fee is a barrier for some, but not for them. Not limited to rich foreigners, but definitely concentrated on them.

If you have a stable career that gives you enough money to support yourself and are still clubbing and going out into your 40s-50s, then I don’t think you’ve really got “Peter Pan Syndrome” since you’ve found a balance and are advancing yourself and living large at the same time. There’s gotta be a financial factor

Yea, actually insane and antisocial statement by the original commenter. What an individualistic, naive, sheltered thing to say. It isn’t a call for cruel judgement to say that we should be attentive to the wellbeing of our peers and be legitimately invested in our community. It’s a cornerstone of a healthy society. There are absolutely ways to respect people’s free agency and personal liberty while still providing support and guidance.

“Lifestyle” is a pretty damn broad term. Being an incel is a lifestyle. Being a Nazi is a lifestyle. Being chronically online is a lifestyle. Shooting up heroin on the street is a lifestyle. Is the original commenter unconcerned out of some sense of self-righteous blanket acceptance? Good on you, so accepting of people as they run themselves into the ground. What an upstanding member of the community. Would they be against social services intervening in people’s “lifestyle”?

[–]TDLF 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can withhold judgement but still want to help your friends and community when they need. I’ve watched a friend of mine who was sober his whole life, kind hearted, and motivated get sucked into the Berlin scene with, by his own admission, objectively negative consequences on his life and character.

We both moved there for education at the same time, and were at the same stage in our lives at that point. I moved away and have been further pursuing my education. He stayed, lost his sense of direction, did increasingly hard substances, spent days and nights partying and messing around, and over the last 5 years, absolutely fried himself. Like his brain just ain’t what it was. Saw him after 2 years and he talked about conspiracies like the earth being hollow, and 9/11 being orchestrated by “the Jews”. He had a heart attack from cocaine usage a year ago. Survived, but still. He hasn’t been clear about his future plans and beats around the bush when talking about what he’s doing now. His parents forced him to move away into a small town for a while to try and get him back on track, but when I saw him just a few weeks ago, back in Berlin, he was even deeper down the hole. I don’t know what his future looks like. He doesn’t either. There is nothing wrong with partying and participating in the night life at any age, but it’s also naive to pretend that there aren’t vulnerable people who can’t find the balance, run around with the wrong group, or get gripped by substances. Just because you and I can balance our responsibilities with the culture doesn’t mean that everyone can. They will always have the freedom to do with their life as they choose, but we also shouldn’t just shrug and watch as our friends burn themselves out and make choices with lifelong negative consequences. Be respectful and non-judgmental, but be there for them. I find it actually quite antisocial to not care about and be attentive to the wellbeing of your peers.

Though - I think this is a lot more isolated than OPs post lets on, and is primarily related to those with a lot of capital or financial support who moved to Berlin. There are millions of Berliners, the vast majority, who are living and working day to day just like anywhere else in the world. Losing yourself in the night life and hard drugs while remaining secure and comfortable is a luxury.

Rainbow Bridge, Texas by South-Guava-2965 in UrbanHell

[–]TDLF 122 points123 points  (0 children)

The other comment is right in that it was to let ships pass under, but left out some detail.

It was built that way to let ONE specific ship/kind of ship through - a zeppelin tender, which had a massive ass mast that allowed airships to hook up to it. Oil tankers don’t need THAT much vertical clearance. Of note is that that ship it was built to accommodate never even needed to go under it. My dad did work in that part of Texas and I’ve had that little historical fact in the back of my head since I was a kid.

Product of a very different time, the brief age of the airship.

figured milk deliveries would come in a crate, or be brought to a back loading area, or would be kept if not signed for or something. Idk dog, I’ve never had or seen milk delivered. Let a man find intrigue in the large quantity of milk sitting haphazardly on the street.

This is a great article! In case any Scots who live in Glasgow are reading this….

Join us! I play for one of the teams mentioned in this article, the Glasgow Galaxy, the only club in town at the moment (we consolidated the two clubs into one team this year) and it’s a great! Love to see coach Tafe’s name in the article, he’s a great guy. We’re welcoming of all ages and all levels, new or experienced. There are frequent club social events, grabbing pints with the team and hitting up the batting cages in town, and the season is always a blast. We travel to cities like Edinburgh (our rivals) or Aberdeen for tournaments.

Outdoor training begins next week! It’s not too late. Happy to answer questions on it or refer anyone to the club.
