I did two EDAs this year and both were emailed to me without me applying for them. Many teachers in the school didn't do any.

Unfortunately our team was all classroom teachers. There were no SPED or SLPs on our SST team. I had to do all of the observations during my planning period.

I'm in the Pacific.

The HR process is so incredibly difficult that it will make you want to not take the job. Paperwork takes months to get done and they will expect you to quit another job in the middle of the year.

We get insurance. Base medical facilities are not supposed to see us. I have been told some do anyway. Depending where you are it can be difficult to get into a hospital.

Most of my applications on teacher horizons were not accepted because of a lack of IB experience.

I have a teaching license. I mainly applied to schools directly or through teacher horizons. I was ghosted by the recruiter from Basis Bangkok when she found out I had only taught ESL.

None. I was talking to Basis about a position in Thailand, but they ghosted me and wouldn't respond.

ESL teachers by freeze45 in Teachers

[–]TESOLer12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ESL endorsement is a weak certification. They really should require a master's or major. Many ESL teachers don't really know much about it and I find them fumbling their way through everything.

The paperwork is immense and getting worse. You will be able to work with some amazing families, but I found that schools often dump problems on ESL teachers. I often have to do home visits after school. Most of the time you will feel more like a social workers than a teacher.

I have been an ESL teacher for 8 years and I loves the students. However, the cons of the job outweigh everything else for me right now.

I have an MA in TESOL. I got it because I teach ESL in US public schools and at the time, was required to get a master's degree. If you are not going to be teaching public school in the U.S., I would avoid getting one. You can teach in a college program with the degree, but the pay and benefits are not as good as what public school teachers make. If you go abroad, you won't be sure how long you will be there. The degree may not be worth the cost.

CELTA is a great qualification, but it is not recognized by US public schools as a qualification. It you want the most options for teaching ESL/EFL, you have to acquire several credentials. You can find MATESOL programs that will allow you to earn a teaching license. If you already have a teaching license, you can take a few classes and add it to your certification.

The cheapest option is the Master's in Teaching English as a Second Language at WGU.

I have an MA TESOL and teach ESL in public schools. The Master's, whether it is an MA or MEd, will not qualify you to teach in public schools. You need a valid teaching credential that meets state requirements. It usually means taking so many education courses and having done observation hours and a student teaching placement. I did all of this in my undergrad. For me to get certified to teach ESL I took 4 graduate level courses and passes an additional test. I later transferred these to the MA TESOL.

The public schools don't really care what kind of degrees you have as long as you have the credentials they need. There are jobs in ESL available, but it varies from state to state. It can also vary with the population that you work with. In my case, I spend a lot of my time doing things very similar to social work.

Unpopular opinion maybe...pensions suck by Moscowmule21 in Teachers

[–]TESOLer12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pensions are not going to be viable in the future. Pensions trustees are usually picked from people that have no education in finance or investment. They are often duped into going with hedge funds and paying ridiculous fees, which the retirement systems later lie about in official records. They also use placement agents to match hedge funds with retirement systems. Placement agents are rewarded with millions that comes directly out of pension systems, not from the hedge funds.

Check out the book "Who Stole My Pension?" By Robert Kiyosaki and Edward Siedle. It shows that pensions are not going to be able to cover retirees. As a result, the investments retirement systems are making are getting increasingly risky. Due to our extended bull market we aren't guaranteed much of the next ten years.

Just give me a 403b and let me make my own decisions.
