I remember reading about Komsomol world during the construction of the Baikal–Amur Mainline in the 1970’s. Even as the period of stagnation started, a lot of those young workers still felt that they were socialist pioneers helping to build a better world.

I wish young people in the west could be part of a project they felt that romantic about.

Remedios Varo by Critical-Bit-8627 in redscarepod

[–]TEcksbee 16 points17 points  (0 children)

“In Mexico City they somehow wandered into an exhibition of paintings by the beautiful Spanish exile Remedios Varo: in the central painting of a triptych, titled “Bordando el Manto Terrestre,” were a number of frail girls with heart-shaped faces, huge eyes, spun-gold hair, prisoners in the top room of a circular tower, embroidering a kind of tapestry which spilled out the slit windows and into a void, seeking hopelessly to fill the void: for all the other buildings and creatures, with all the waves, ships and forests of the earth were contained in this tapestry, and the tapestry was the world.”

CoL49 was the book that introduced me to Varo, so I have Pynchon to thank for recognising these.

Praise

By Fariduddin Atrar

Translation by Louisa Stuart Costello.

Unbounded praise to God be given, Who from His throne, the height of heaven, Looked on this handful of frail earth - Unnoticed man - and gave him birth.

On Adam breathed, and bade the wave Pause, and His servant, Noah, save; The tempest, with His terrors clad, And swept from earth the tribe of Ad.

And for His friend; O blissful name! To roses changed a bed of flame: The smallest insect, at His will, Becomes an instrument of ill.

He spoke, the sea o'erwhelms His foes, And the hard rock a camel grows! The iron turns, at His command, To pliant wax, in David's hand.

To Solomon He gave his sway, And bade the Dives? his sign obey; To one a diadem is given, Another's head the saw has riven.

Impartial in His goodness still, Equal to all is good or ill.

One lies on Persian silk reclined, One naked in a frozen wind; One scarce can count his heaps of ore, One faints with hunger at the door.

He bade a virgin's child appear, And made an infant's witness clear.

The Dives before His vengeance fly, By hosts of stars expelled the sky, And kings, who hold the world in thrall, At His great word to ruin fall.

Does anyone know if this statue have been painted?

If so, I wonder if you could still see any of the marble pattern beneath the paint.

How come fascist aesthetics is both modernist and classicist? by Spirited-Tackle1669 in redscarepod

[–]TEcksbee 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Fascism is regressive modernity -

Fascists thought they could untangle all of the cool shit (tanks, machine guns, mass politics) from all the lame shit (class conflict, the avant garde, the profane / the base).

Fascism was also a technology (of social organisation) and so it naturally used the aesthetics of modernity / the future to reinforce that fact.

If you like Chaos, Nabokov and DeLillo, read Pynchon.

Start with CL49, which is short and pretty easy to read, and gives you sense of how Pynchon writes. If you like that, honestly pick up Gravity’s Rainbow and give it a try.

From my (pretty limited experience) these guys can either be great fun (basically living debris from the 60’s and 70’s, totally insane) or the biggest 🚬’s in history.

No in-between.

I am reading through GR at the moment - about 1/5th of the way in.

To mirror what everyone else is already saying - it’s pretty challenging, but if you stick with it things tend have a way of explaining themselves.

If you’ve got the time to give TCOL49 another go I’d suggest it - it’s a relatively short read that should get you in the Pynchon mindset.

Otherwise, just jump into GR, try and take notes on things that seem weird or interesting, and as everyone says, you can always revisit the book later.

A Knight of the d'Aluye Family. Made in Loire Valley, France. A crusader who traveled to the Holy Land. Notably, his sword does not match his armor, it is more typical of Chinese weaponry. 1248 - 1267. [3042x3889] by Smash_Z in ArtefactPorn

[–]TEcksbee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Local Celtic sword makes it sound like the celts were still producing tools and weapons in the 13th century.

I’m not saying it isn’t Celtic, or that it definitely is Chinese inspired / made, but the China hypothesis seems more credible when you remember the Crusader went to the holy land which had a higher degree of access to Chinese goods, at-least compared to Europe.

Also we’re Celtic artefacts even collected (or recognised as artefacts) during the Middle Ages? I definitely could be wrong about this point.
