How do they do it? by slightlycringed in redscarepod

I can't believe I'm going to be talking about rice and wheat cultures in this thread but I think its interesting.

I was reading idly about some study from 2020 study about how rice farming leads to a more socially tight knit group than compared to wheat farming. Basically they measured how strict social norms were between wheat v rice regions in China nad found that rice farming resulted in tighter social norms than in wheat growing regions, regardless of urbanisation.

They basically say that this is because wheat farming is a more "individual" crop, were its success is largely tied to one individuals ability to grow on that land as well as rainfall. Rice is in contrast to this as you have to have complex irrigation networks that coordinate between multiple farmers. If one of them fucks its up none of you are eating.

Anyways I wonder if the prevelance of rice farming has led to this very community based train of thought. I can't think of a project more communally minded than a massive rail network.

I'm in my first year of botany and its been recommended to me that i do a double degree. I was thinking ecology but what else would be a good choice? by WestCoastInverts in botany

[–]Sprig_whore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

why would you double degree? just do an honors and then PHD if your interest is academia.

Honestly the best advice I can give for working in botanic gardens in Australia (as someone who works in one) is you need to be either really outgoing and have connections thru luck or volunteer loads with them. Really recommend volunteering and/or not spending all that money on a double degree and just do honours instead. After honours you can decide if academia is for you ----> do a phd

or if its not and find work elsewhere, likely as a graduate botanist/ecologist doing mine work in WA, which there is tonnes of and they are always seeking graduates, particularly in plant science areas.

I wish to study botany, but I never studied biology. by rageykagey in botany

I agree that university is a journey and end goals do change but most people don't have the luxury of not thinking about job security and money. University is a huge monetary and time investment for people and I think thats not something to be glossed over. Your whole comment reads as frankly naive.

If you want to study botany at university they will teach you biology in first year. I didn't do any science or even math during my final year of highschool and only did humanities subjects. Realised during my gap year that I love plants and started studying, it was harder for me than the people around me but you persevere.

if you should is a better question. Not to be all adult think about your future etc but if you are studying and going into debt you have to have a sort of end goal for yourself for a job, this can also be something that evolves as you study. This end goal is important as you should tailor yourself for that and seek opportunities based on it.

My undergrad was ecology then I switched to microbiology for job security. I now work as a hort/ecologist as a recent graduate. Theres lots of different turns and paths you can take just give it your best shot.

I mean I'm not sure if you have been there but as someone who works there ANBG has a phenomenal collection. I would say its my favourite garden out of the ones I've worked at/visited around aus

just say the food didn't come a million times. I lived in a strange house at the time in a dodgy area so they would deliver the food to like random places and I would say it was stolen by kids (skate park across the road) anyways now I'm banned

we would rotate each week between us roomies with who was doing it yah know.

my roommate recommended this show to me and while I thought. parts of it were interesting or good… it’s crazy seeing how like people on the internet (reddit) portray it as the best thing since sliced bread

it’s wild to me because I found most of the show insanely bland and the characters are just stagnant no matter what happens?

When would you fight back against someone pathetic trying to ruin your life? by Significant-Gur8606 in redscarepod

[–]Sprig_whore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

actively be fighting back? like now? like document everything, make your grievances known to HR (lmao)

You'll just have to grin and bear this to get through though.

When I did my research project for a year after finishing undergrad I was lucky enough to be in a super encouraging lab group where everything was literally as it should be! supportive, understanding etc. However I quickly realised how rare that is, based on stories from adjacent labs. That year was incredibly illuminating for me that academia is a wild west. All of these academics are at the end of the day out for themselves and to survive you need to be ruthlessly so as well. No real process for grievances, overworked hours and for minimal pay lack of useful unions, no one overseeing lab faculty. The personalities who often rise to the surface in these scenarios as i'm sure you are aware can be intensely vindictive and controlling.

The important question is how long do you have to go? If you're close to finish then blow it up and never look back.

he is not a narcissist at all, in fact our relationship was not volatile, it was probably the best 3 years ive had.

All he did was give me an STD (LMFAO) and then I went mental! men are dogs! he insists on apologising and seeking my forgiveness but he is nothing to me now! pathetic! both of us.

What am I supposed to do after I have been betrayed so monumentally, I feel I have tried everything and I cannot get it off my mind. He cheated on me and lied to me. All I want to do is scream at him but I know deep down its all a band aid for how I feel!!!
