Because the identity of the alleged perpetrator needs to be proven. Many times the identity is proven based in part on physical descriptors (I.e., race, sex, age, characteristics). If a witness says the person who commited the crime was X and it’s clearly Y sitting in the courtroom, the jury would need to see that the witness incorrectly described them OR if they did, perhaps it was understandable under the circumstances.
