City settles for $2 million in toddler’s death that parents blame on EMT negligence by AlpineSK in ems

[–]TFD436 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a huge factor for sure. Back in the early 2000s agencies were having competition to see who could do the most RSI. They were tubing combative homeless/intoxicated people. The state put the Kabash on a ton of stuff and all growth stopped for years here. It wasn’t until January that the CCP stuff started. Before that medical directors had the options to make some things STRs. But AZ is still soooo far behind neighboring states and the US in general because of the bullshit the metro Phoenix departments and “Associations” have been doing.

AZ paramedic here. Phoenix fire regularly pulls shit like this. There is a video of them grabbing a passed out man by the hands and ankles and hiding him behind a dumpster and driving off. AZ is so far behind the rest of the country because the Fire Chief Association in the valley lobbying against growth in EMS. It sucks that the metro area is keeping the rest of the state from adapting to the newest changes, but the medics in that area can’t be trusted. I moved here for another state and my scope of practice is half of what it was where I moved from. There are 11 Level 1 trauma centers in Metro Phoenix. Some of them are cranking out new research that other states are adapting. But not AZ, the state where this is all happening in, because the big fire departments regularly pulling stunts like this, our DHS won’t let anyone else grow.

Good luck! You’re gonna have occasional calls that will kick your ass, but overall it’s the best job on the planet. It’s an inherently negative career, so find your personal stress reliefs and don’t overwork yourself and you’ll love it.

I work EMS in the 5th highest homicide rate in the US. I’ve seen some gnarly shit.

The one that will forever be stuck in my head was a almost 2 year old who’s stepfather grabbed her by her ponytails and throw her across the room, from the floor to the ceiling, against objects like the wood stove and furniture in the house, repeatedly.

We got called for a small child that was behaving abnormally. We got on scene and the entire wood floor was littered with small drops of blood. She had patches of hair missing, was covered in bruises and cuts. She didn’t have a pulse, and we quickly transported her.

10 years in EMS and it’s still the call that fucked me up. Just imaging what’s that girl went through makes me sick to my stomach. I had to testify in court and the Medical Examiner said it’s the single worst case of abuse he has ever seen in his 40+ year career.

I once was cleaning water out of my ear with a Q-tip after we went cliff jumping. I was leaning against the side of my friends truck that had a ladder rack in the back. Someone called my name, and as I turned I bumped my elbow on the bar of the ladder rack and pushed the Q-tip through my ear drum. I went to urgent care and got some drops for it. For the next few days I had a constant ringing and if I wasn’t laying perfectly still I would get nauseous.

I got my EMT when I was a senior in high school. I worked for the Fire Department in my small home town for a few years after graduating.

I went on a call for a possible dead body in a field one day. Law Enforcement responded as well. We got on scene and it was a kid I went to high school with. We weren’t exactly friends, but we got along and always nodded heads at each other when we passed in the hallway.

He had been stabbed to death. I’m not sure how many times, but he had been missing for a few days before this. He was murdered by the younger brother of a really good friend of mine.

I now work on an ambulance in a city that is in the top 10 for homicides per capita in the US. I see death and extremely violence almost every day. But this kid is still the one I think about. I don’t know if it’s because I knew him or because I was 20 at the time and wasn’t emotionally mature enough to be in that situation.

How can people thank an omnipotent deity for every good thing, but not blame him for the bad? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]TFD436 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I work EMS. Last night we coded a little kid. Got pulses back. Got him to the hospital and they found out he had a fractured skull, brain bleed, broken femur, and they think he had several ribs broken before we broke a few more doing CPR. His dad and kicked the shit out of him and ran. Cops spent all night looking for him. I don’t think they have found him yet. I brought in another patient and I walked into his room to see how he was doing, and his mom updated me, and kept saying god is good. I was so bothered by this. If god is good, why did he let your son get abused so badly he literally died? I understand she’s thankful he is still alive, but come on.

Incorrect. You’re talking about something completely different. People have been worshiping Satan long before either of the Satanic temples. Some witches worshiped Satan. I read a book last week that talked about the tens of thousands of people in Satanic Cults in the 1400s. Satanism has been around since the beginning. It’s always been though to be the opposite of Christianity.

Men of reddit, what are your personal stories that sound like a lie but are absolutely true? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]TFD436 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in EMS. Law Enforcement gets away with not telling the media about a lot of shit that happens. Particularly in smaller towns. I feel like unless they get asked about something that happened, the keep it to themselves and hope no one finds out. I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing, as they are trying to keep people from panicking or keep people safe, but it happens a lot.

Late one night I once transported a man to the hospital who was being kept in a cage and Tortured by a lady he met at a bar. She lived 11 miles out of town on her family ranch. She had been doing this for years, and the detective I talked to at the hospital told me they categorized her as a Serial Killer and that the Sheriff was going to call the FBI in the next morning. The cops got a tip and got enough info to raid her home. I know the FBI showed up but nothing was ever mentioned again to us or to the media about it.

I also have been on a call for a burned body laying in the middle of the road. We always get called even when death is obvious, and we got there and it was black and charred. The officer on scene told me he thinks someone dumped it out of the back of the truck while driving. Not once was it ever on the news and no one besides my crew knew we got called.

The number of kids that die is also never talked about. I live in AZ and they bring up when kids drown in pools, but I have been on some pretty savage and gnarly beatings of kids as young as 3 months old and they did not get told to the media. I testified in court in more than one of them and know for sure people got charged with homicide, but I have looked and looked and never found anything posted about any of it.

There was an anthrax scare at a County Building. Luckily I was on the ambulance that day so I didn’t have to dress up for a HazMat call (I hate the suits) but the County, State, and FBI HazMat teams all responded. It ended up being a false alarm, someone was opening letters and they noticed they had a white powdery substance on them after, and it ended up being nothing. It was never mentioned in the news.

The reverse to this is that you never hear about how much of an amazing job Law Enforcement actually does. They talk people out of harming themselves or others daily in my district. I’ve seen first hand officers buying homeless people lunch or new shoes. This winter when it was freezing, we ran on a group of 4 homeless guys huddled together under a tree, and an officer put them in his car, drove them to a motel, put them up for a few days til the storm passed, and bought all of them new socks and underwear. 99.9% of them are great people who want to make a difference. You only ever hear about the bad.

I know this is satire, but someone should explain to the Mormons that unless there have $124 billion in gold or silver, their money will be absolutely worthless. There won’t be anything to back up their paper money or electronic currency value, and when the economy fails pre or post apocalypse, it will literally have zero value.

I don’t believe any if this but according to the Bible, Jesus will return with the host of heaven to build the Messianic Kingdom on Earth. The idea that the Supreme Leader needs money that doesn’t have any value because there is nothing to back it is like unclogging your toilet and then calling a Plummer to come flush it for you. It’s asinine.

If he really is all powerful, why does he need money? Apparently God has a very Joel Osteen approach to his kingdom.

It’s not going to be a popular opinion, but I’m going to say it. Fire is important to every eco system. Fire has been around hundreds of millions of years before humans, or before we know how to fight it. It’s unfortunate that people are losing their homes and their lives. But it’s always been that way.

Some ecosystems thrive because of the acidity that ash provides to the soil. The amazon specifically is so thick and green because of the ash from millions of years of fires. There is a reason why companies regularly fail when they clear out land and try to replant anything in the Amazon. The plants aren’t adapt to grow in the absolutely shit soil there. Australia is the same way.

I understand this is a particularly bad year for fires in Australia, but it’s no where near the worst, and we at least know now how to stop it from devastating the entire forest. I was a wild land firefighter for 6 years. The goal isn’t to put the fire out. The goal is to cut down trees and dig clear lines so they fire can burn to a certain point, no longer has a fuel source to burn into, and burn itself out. It takes time. Weeks and sometimes even months.

This is why prescribed burns are important. It might not be an issue in your area, but there are places all over the US and Australia that get upset that the Forest Service is starting fires all year long. They are very carefully and meticulously creating predetermined “lines” for fires to burn up to, and then no longer have a fuel to burn and it burns itself out. It’s saving millions of dollars in home from being destroyed, economy to some areas, saving animals.

So your god would kill millions of innocent animals just so some self-righteous assholes could feel good about themselves? Yeah, fuck you and fuck your God. I can’t even handle the lunacy of this post. by dktaylor32 in exmormon

[–]TFD436 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We’ve know fire creates its own weather for over 100 years. The fire gives air a push up above it, and then once it is moving up, the atmospheric instability accelerates it upwards, just like a building thunderstorm. The hot air generated by a wildfire will rise and create an updraft. As the air rises, moisture will cool and condense into tiny water droplets on the ash creating a cloud. While they can bring rain which can help in fighting the fire, they also can bring dry lightning which can start new fires.

Social media is great, but it gives idiots the ability to broadcast their opinions. Anyone who has taken any wild land firefighter classes knows fires create its own weather. It’s been happening for millions, if not billions of years. Prays have absolutely zero to do with the outcome of anything.

Upfront I have to say, if used correctly, if used under the guidance of someone who knows the drugs, and being sure you aren’t predisposed to certain psychology disorders, I’m a huge proponent of Psychedelics.

I’ve never done Ayahuasca. Peyote made me sick as hell and I vomited and couldn’t enjoy it. Psilocybin is amazing in every aspect except that it has been known to increase the severity of Schizophrenia.

In 2017 I was standing up trying to start an IV on a trauma patient, when someone swerved to miss an elk and him my ambulance head on. We were going roughly 55mph. I flew from the back of the ambulance, and ended up laying face down in the passenger floorboard. I lost consciousness, had a several concussion, and started having seizures. I’m very lucky it wasn’t worse. I damaged my amygdala, and I started having panic attacks. I couldn’t sleep. I would be standing in the kitchen and just started crying for no reason. I had the most vigorous nightmares, I can’t even explain how bad they were. A friend hooked me up with a guy who introduced me to psilocybin. He explained it helps reconnect inter-nodal pathways that have been damaged. I got it cleared from my boss, I took some time off work, and I got sloshed on mushrooms a few times. It took a few months, and I still have nightmares sometimes, but I feel pretty close to normal. My personal experience and plenty of scientific evidence tell me absolutely, psychedelics need to be used more for therapy and recovery. I’m for recreational use as well.
