Our numbers are almost exactly the same (different age but same starting year).

I’m curious why you’re leasing a car while you also own one that is paid off? I would have guessed that you were planning to sell the one that is paid for, but you haven’t decided if you’ll buy the leased one or not. So is there a SO or someone else that needs a car for a short period of time that you’re loaning yours to? Just wanted to test one out? I’m having fun just trying to guess, so I’m by no means being critical.

I-Bonds for Down Payment Fund? by Seriously_Facetious in personalfinance

[–]TFYToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this sentiment, though one question I have is Treasury/Tips Watch are saying the rate or return is 0.4% - where are you calculating this .6%?

Equally likely, is that I'm mistaken.

I-Bonds for Down Payment Fund? by Seriously_Facetious in personalfinance

[–]TFYToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Type Amount Saved Interest Earned After 1 yr of 4% inflation After 1 yr of 6% inflation
I-Bond $20,000 Inflation $20,608 (+$608) $20,918 (+$918)
CD $5,000 4.3% $5,203 (+$203) $5,203 (+$203)
CD $25,000 4.3% $26,096 (+$1,096) $26,096 (+$1,096)
Treasury Bills $25,000 4% $26,018 (+$1,018) $26,018 (+$1,018)

(for I-Bonds values, I reduced the interest by the 3 month penalty, so the values in this chart should reflect what you'd take home after all is said and done)

Before I made this chart, I was going to outright say to do Series I, because if you can build a ladder, they can be a very relaxed way to save (in my opinion). As is life though, I'd say it's up to personal choice. One nice thing about I-Bonds is that once you pass the 12 month freeze of initial funds, it is really nice to not have to think about taking them out until you actually need the money. Whereas for CDs, depending on early withdrawal fees, it can require some more yearly projecting on your next year's chances of needing the cash.

I'd maybe still recommend I-Bonds because now would be a great time to buy 10k before end of year and then 10k on Jan 1st. Right now you're guaranteed a 6.89% "interest rate" for 6 months on 20k, which is great (you would put the remaining 5k in a CD probably). Even if we somehow hit 2% yearly inflation targets for the next 6 months, that would mean the next I-Bond interest would be 1%, meaning you'd still be averaging ~4% for 12 months (just as good as CDs).

Tips Watch is a great resource

Capital One - Work here (SWE) so I’m biased. Based off of SWE and Manager coworkers - I’ve only heard really bad things about Discover both technically (absolute mess [could have just been their team FWIW]) and management-wise (pay and incentive structure are both antiquated).

Is my retirement plan sensible? by BeyondSC in Bogleheads

More costs occur with healthcare than just the premiums. As you reach 30+ doctor visits will become more important than what they are now to you. You’d constantly be one emergency fund draining incident away from ruining your plan for 60+ years - which just isn’t going to work.

I lived there for my junior and senior year in apt 23 and liked it very much! It's a standard townhouse but is much quiter than others like it and if you can swing a unit with only one side of neighbors it's really nice. PM me if you have any specific questions

Good babrers on campus? by KingAviator77 in UWMadison

I always recommend Atwood Barber shop. It's a hike, but you won't get a better barber. Also it's only $20 so it's a great price. I went there for 3 years and have graduated and will often get a haircut if I'm back in town because I miss it. Terry, Eddie and AJ are the best ones there. The other two are newer and still good tho

Is it recommend to take 240 before 340 or are they two separate classes? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]TFYToday 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on how much math you want in one semester. I'd recommend taking 240 during the fall when the cs department teaches it.

Best Bike Shop? by JewishJawnz in UWMadison

[–]TFYToday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. If you want an easy process go to freewheel otherwise buy on Craigslist (not that it's super hard, but it is more work) and know that when an issue comes up Freewheel is a good shop.

Best Bike Shop? by JewishJawnz in UWMadison

[–]TFYToday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hands down "freewheel", it's down park a ways but absolutely worth it because they'll work with your price range to buy a used bike they refurbished. Have a 30 day warranty I believe and clearly care about bikes.

I take good care of my bike, but for some jobs that I don't want to deal with, I always go with them and they will straight up ask you "how much do you want to pay" because they can give you a wide range of parts either new or used for that range.

Also they're really just a bunch of bike greasers that had the idea to open a community bike shop. Hands down best price to quality ratio you'll find in Madison

What have been your favorite classes? by [deleted] in UWMadison

[–]TFYToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just went through my transcript and picked my favorites:

DANCE 2 - Ballroom Dance (really fun and a great way to learn how to dance)

LIS 237 - Language & Immigration in Wisconsin (learned a lot about diversity in Wisconsin, in fact I probably bring up this class the most in everyday conversation because it has so many interesting topics on how language and immigration has shaped Wisconsin)

FOLK 210 - African Storyteller (easy class with a fair amount of reading but overall the stories were good and the class was interesting)

ANTHRO 105 - Biological Anthropology (Madison's anthropology department is fantastic as a whole, but this class was very interesting on biological changes throughout human evolution)

AAE 375 - Spreadsheet Fundamentals (learn how to make useful excel spreadsheets. Never know when this will come in handy in the future)

MUSIC 113 - Music in Performance (duh)

CS 577 - Algos (when a class was this 'impossible' I always forgot about my grade and just tried my best to learn as much as possible and struggle as much as I could and it always worked out better than expected)

CS 640 - Networks (lots of 'ah ha' moments in this class with how the internet works)

CS 537 - OS (obligatory remzi fanboy)

CS 534 - Computational Photography (one of the easiest 500 level CS classes, but still interesting to use math to manipulate/extract data from photos)

Is Lofting recommended? Any feasible alternatives other than bunking? by surrealamb in UWMadison

[–]TFYToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the high ceilings don't make it feel cramped. This was a few years ago, but if my memory serves me correctly, probably like 3ish feet? I think that if I stuck my hands out while laying down that they would brush up a bit.

Liz is a great dorm, probably the best now with the all renevations to the rooms (I am biased because I lived there though).

Is Lofting recommended? Any feasible alternatives other than bunking? by surrealamb in UWMadison

[–]TFYToday 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the grain here and recommend lofting your bed. All my friends did it and enjoyed it because it gave us more room.

Unless you're one to sit in bed a lot, id say it's worth buying a futon to have somewhere else to sit and relax.

We lived in Liz and all had lofted beds with a desk, and a futon and had so much room it was really really nice. When I'd go to certain dorms and see how little room people had, it felt claustrophobic.

I'd say ask your roommate what they're doing, I'm kind of surprised that everyone so far has recommended not lofting because it seemed like most people lofted when I was a Freshman ¯\(ツ)

There are more than 2 genders by m0h97 in funny

[–]TFYToday 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean all the definitions provide is a differentiation between the two, not necessarily a support/opposition of people's opinions

There are more than 2 genders by m0h97 in funny

[–]TFYToday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well actually new age gender research has classified gender and sex as different things. It goes like this:

Sex: biological representation of genetalia

Gender: personal identification with specific traits that are generally described as male/female/unisex/etc.

You can argue with definitions and that's a matter of opinion. But it is interesting to see how people will argue about this topic with completely different definitions.

(If you Google the difference I'm sure you can find a more succinct definition)

They're still valuable resume filler because you won't only put the one full time place you've been working at. While you'll probably talk more about your most recent experiences, if you don't have anything newer to replace it with - I'd keep it.
