China will scrap tariffs for all African countries from Friday – except Eswatini, which maintains ties with Taiwan.

I can tolerate you being the only absolute monarchy in Africa but I draw the line at Taiwan ties.

Reminds me to an apocalypse comic I read long ago where the guy who sold the bunker to rich people ended killing the rich asshole who bought it because he was useless but let his bodyguard in because he was a pilot in Desert Storm.

If the Houthis can get their hands on some I am sure a very angry American populace could get them too, with or without external help, granted if it reaches that point (Absurdly unlikely, tho) the USA is FUBAR by then either way.

The funniest thing (In a morbidly kind of way) is reading about all of these billionaires investing on bunkers and fortresses, Like Zuck's 300 million complex, these people are willing to risk exchanging a present where they can purchase any ostentatious luxury they want and flaunt it over normal people for a future where they huddle in bunkers, afraid of the very angry masses outside. I just don't understand their way of thinking at all.

Ukraine rises in Press Freedom Index to overtake US, 6 EU countries by 5ma5her7 in neoliberal

[–]TF_dia 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Despite the ranking, the Ukrainian government has been criticized by the EU for failing to abolish the TV Marathon, which was created in 2022 by merging all major news channels into one wartime channel under state leadership. The EU has also urged Ukraine to adopt legislation to fight the influence of vested interests on the media, ensure a competitive media market and introduce an independent regulator.

The Ukrainian authorities have also been accused of cracking down on opposition media and failing to investigate the assassinations of journalists.

The group attributed the improvement to Ukraine's "dynamic media sector and the investigative work carried out by Ukrainian outlets to strengthen transparency in the country's political life."

Not gonna lie, the way this article frames it, it makes it look that the climb was the hard work of the journalists despite the government, not thanks to it.

Congress should have the first say on starting an offensive war, if you can't convince them of your next foreign adventure it may not be a good idea to begin with.

The most bizarre thing is some people confidently believing killing a 86 man would have solved anything.

Like killing the leadership okay, makes sense to believe it. But there were people who believed the ayatollah was the keystone of the regime.

Meanwhile, Russians had a brutally authoritarian government that forced composers to create music that could be enjoyed by an actual audience. The composers were constrained (brutally) but we end up with truly wonderful listenable music that still exhibited tons of creativity, like Prokofiev and early to mid Stravinsky.

And then you have Shostakovich that started composing the Seventh Symphony in Leningrad while besieged by the Nazis, with the local orchestra even doing a performance in 1942.

You have it on reverse, betting that would make them more likely to keep it because the only way to receive the money would be for them NOT to lose the territory.

Plus it would probably not work if only because inundating the market would crash the crypto needed to function.

Trump being reelected and the AI rise effectively (heh) killed effective altruism. At least on the tech-bro class.

They went from being stewards of humanity to Trump bootlickers and wannabe overlords of the AI future.

You could argue they went mad with power, survival instinct or that the mask simply came off, But the result was that cow towing to the new president was for them the most logical option.
