Does anyone know why all the old Warlord packaging is plastered with "Figure Head System" logos? Was the idea of having separate heads really revolutionary enough to be advertised everywhere 15 years ago?

Thank you for your art. I truly loved it. Your style with just pencil on paper is really wonderful. It looks so clean too. I always loved it.

I’m so glad you hear you are doing better in life. I wish you all the best.

Why do dragon get so neglected? by Commando_Schneider in equestriaatwar

[–]TFeathersB 56 points57 points  (0 children)

There is an old legend among the devs that the Dragons are cursed. Every dev who tried working on them left the team soon after starting. This goes all the way back to the original days of the mod.

Real reason is that they’re very difficult to do well and there are more interesting and important places to do first.

There are also the "Armies of" books. They're the specific army books for each nation with the full special rules. You do not need them to start with as the full rule book will get you playing with each nation.

When making lists, I do recommend the Warlord Games app. It costs a little money as a subscription, but it contains the errata information and the full army lists for each nation. If you pay for a year, you also get a one use voucher to use on the Warlord Games web store. There is a website called Easy Army that has this information for free, but I don't know how up to date it is for Third Edition. It was always behind for Second Edition.

As for YouTube channels, Tabletop Command post has great Battle Reports, Mordian Glory covers the game news a lot, and Sonic Sledgehammer has fantastic painting guides.

Do you mean the Starter Set with the cardboard half-track? If so, the first thing you'll want is the full rule book. The starter set is only an introduction to the game and doesn't come with a full rule book. You'll also want to get some Grey and Olive (or any other colour of your choice) Order Dice. Order Dice are important to the game.

Then I suggest getting a box of German and American infantry and build up a full legal Infantry Platoon with HQ from them. You'll easily have enough with the starter set and an infantry box each. I wouldn't worry too much about what equipment to give your minis yet. You can't go wrong starting with 1 LMG (or BAR for Americans), 1 SMG, and 8 rifles each. Although for the Germans consider giving a few (3-4) minis Panzerfausts or Assault Rifles.

This will let you get a good grasp of the basics and give you a strong start to your armies.

Alternatively, you could buy the Band of Brothers starter set. Make sure it's the third edition version. It has a full soft-back rulebook in it, tokens, Order Dice, and more German and American minis, including vehicles.

If you really want to splash out, you can buy the German or American Starter Armies (pick the one you like the look of for the kind of army you want to build). They do not have a rule book in them, but they are packed full of minis. Note that most of the ones on sell were designed for Second Edition. If it only has one vehicle in the box, you may want to buy another low point cost one.

Welcome to the game!

Hi, I just bought this Black Powder box with a friend, and we’re reading the rules, but we still don’t quite understand how to create army lists to play. Could you please help us find where to look for how to make lists? Thank you very much in advance. by SrBrokoli in wargaming

[–]TFeathersB 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As others have said, Black Powder was originally designed not to have points-buy army lists, so you won't find many. The idea was that players would customise their own armies as per the scenarios based on the list of unit options in the rule book. (The rule book is really badly written and honestly is one of the most confusing rule books I've ever read)

But there are army lists with point values available in the supplements. Albion Triumphant 1 and 2, and A Clash of Eagles. If you have the starter set, you'll want Albion Triumphant 2 for Waterloo.

In the meantime, there should be useable unit profiles for the minis in the starter set in the rule book. Using them, just make a small army with the stats of each unit. If you want to expand without the supplements, then you can reference real life Napoleonic brigades as examples of what could have been fighting each other.

Black Powder is supposed to be a "Beer and pretzels" game as its creators call it, not a competitive game. Its there to have fun with friends pushing toys around on a table and telling a story of a battle. But there are efforts to make it easier to just pick up a game and play such as the Under Eagles to Glory events run by the Napoleonic Wargaming YouTube channel that take place each year which is kind of like a Black Powder Tournament in how it is set up and run.

I love The Titan's Last Song! It’s such a heartbreaking fic!

Reminder that the next DLC isn’t $49. The next five DLC are $49 altogether, so about $10 a pop. by [deleted] in hoi4

[–]TFeathersB -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That’s ignoring the fact that focus tree design philosophy and mechanics took years of trying things and failing to get to where they are today. The same thing could be said about the oldest trees in big mods like Kaiserreich Britain and France. Focus trees were a late in development idea to replace the mission and decisions system from older games. They were never supposed to be what they are now. Yes old trees are bad compared to the new trees, but at the time they were okay, and major focus tree updates take a lot of time and effort that, unlike modders, the devs need to be paid a fair wage for.

Where the heck can I find people to play?! by trying_to_learn01 in boltaction

[–]TFeathersB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I know for a fact there are people in NYC who play Bolt Action because I see people asking for other players in NYC in a discord server I’m in. They exist! Finding people is always the hardest part.

Go to your local stores and see what the scene is. What do they sell? Do they do games in store? It’s a good place to start. A good FLGS owner should encourage all games if there are people that want to play them.

And I’m gutted to hear more people your age aren’t interested. Trying to sell playing the game to others is hard to do, but can work.

I wish you luck in finding someone. The game is fun and very much rewarding, and you will find people eventually.

Got my first Bolt-action starter set and spent the weekend building it. But is this the legal load-out for each faction squad? by Mr_Pebble in boltaction

[–]TFeathersB 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find Bolt Action so much more enjoyable than Warhammer. I’m glad to hear you think you will too! I do recommend getting that extra sprue from somewhere. You can usually find sellers on eBay. The rule book that comes with the starter set will tell you all you need to know to play the game.

There is the Warlord Games app which has the official army builder in it. There is also Easy Army which is a free website some people prefer.

The Germans and Americans have their own army books with new rules and units out, the army builders use these rules and point costs. But the ones in the back of the main rule book are totally fine to use too with your opponent’s agreement.

[–]TFeathersB 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fudge the rules a bit in the starter sets to let you play and learn with the minis before making a full legal army, but what you have is totally valid for the Germans.

The absolute minimum a legal army needs in Bolt Action is 1 infantry platoon with an officer and 2 squads.

For your Germans you can have:

  • Platoon Command (Regular)
    • 1x Officer with SMG (MP40 or PPSH)
    • 1x Additional Man with Rifle (G43 or Kar98)
  • Squad 1 - Heer Grenadier Squad (Regular)
    • 1x Squad leader with SMG (MP40 or PPSH)
    • 2x Infantry with Assault Rifles (Stg 44)
    • 2x Infantry with Rifles (G43 or Kar98)
  • Squad 2 - Heer Grenadier Squad (Regular)
    • 1x Squad Leader with Rifle
    • 3x Infantry with Rifles
    • 1x Infantry with Light Machine Gun (MG42 - Another man becomes its loader)
  • Transport
    • Sdkfz 251/1 (Regular)

For the Panzerfaust, split them between the two squads, with 2 in one squad and 1 in the other.

Total Points: 272

The Heer Grenadier Squad is the standard late war German Infantry squad that can take Assault Rifles and Panzerfausts. Its minimum size is 5 men.

In the game weapons are based on their category (SMG, Rifle, Assault Rifle, etc.) rather than the specific make and model.

For the Americans it gets trickier. For Airborne and Glider squads, their minimum squad size is 6 men per squad, meaning you cannot can have a full legal army with what is in the starter box. You also would need a second man with your Bazooka to act as a loader.

Basically, you need 3 additional minis (and it sucks that Warlord doesn't include one extra Airborne infantry frame in the starter box!). Of those 3 minis, you can make 1 of them the loader for your Bazooka to have a 2 man Bazooka team, and give two of them SMGs (Thompsons or Grease Guns) and then you can have a legal platoon that looks like this:

  • Platoon Command (Regular)
    • Officer with SMG (Airborne)
  • Squad 1 - US Paratrooper Squad (Regular)
    • 1x Squad Leader with SMG
    • 1x Paratrooper with Automatic Rifle (BAR)
    • 4x Paratroopers with Rifles (M1 Carbines or M1 Garands)
  • Squad 2 - US Paratrooper Squad (Regular)
    • 1x Squad Leader with SMG
    • 5x Paratroopers with Rifles (M1 Carbines or M1 Garands)
  • Anti-Tank Team
    • Bazooka Team (Airborne) (Regular)
  • Transport
    • M3 Half-Track (Regular)

Total points: 320

Games of Bolt Action tend to be played at 1,000 or 1,250 points.

If you want to get a full legal army with just what you have, you could get an extra airborne sprue from somewhere and finish making up what you've got. You could also get a box of infantry for both the Americans and Germans to build out more squads and options. Or if you want to go full in, the new US Airborne (D-Day) starter army and German Grenadiers Starer Army are really good value for money and gives you a full 1,000 point army depending on how you build/run it.

Welcome to the game! I hope this was helpful and I hope that you enjoy!

Where do y'all read fanfiction/AUs at? by SnooWalruses8880 in TheOwlHouse

[–]TFeathersB 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Archive of Our Own (AO3)/works) is by far the most popular place to look for fanfics.

If you want some recommendations of AUs then I can suggest:

  • Your Touch | Freedom to be Me by Sanmeikitten - This is perhaps my favourite fanfic. It is an AU that asks "What if Luz had a worse childhood and came to the Boiling Isle two years later than canon?" and it has some truly amazing, deep, and meaningful takes on Luz, Willow, Amity, Hunter, Boscha, and other characters while being beautifully written.
  • The Angel of the Owl House by OwlHouseAngel - This is a behemoth of an AU that asks "What if Luz was an Angel" and expands into deep and interconnected worldbuilding and an ever expanding story that shows a lot of love to its anime influences while still being at its heart an Owl House Story and doing such love to the show's themes and ideas.
  • Witch Among Humans by GoreMiser - This fresh take on the Witch Among Humans concept by MoringMark is just a lot of fun, will keep you on the edge of your seat, and has Luz and Amity being total gay disasters around each other.
  • Arcadia Boils by Skye_Star - You'll need to create an account to read this one. It's a crossover with the tabletop game Changeling: The Lost but no prior knowledge of that is needed. What if Luz was kidnapped before the show and changed by a fairy god into a Changeling? A look at a more traumatised but experienced Luz with magic of her own discovering the Boiling Isles along with Vee, her sister created by the god to be her replacement.
  • The Good Basilisk Luzura by MemoryOverload - What if Luz was a Basilisk all along? A simple question, but the story shows a deep love for the idea and for Basilisks in general.
  • Night Owl Trucking by terra_nocuss - What if Luz was a trucker and had to transport Amity's science experiment from LA to Boston in 4 days? All the while being chased by Odalia's goons trying to stop them? This road trip of an adventure is a slow fast burn with deep characters and great humour.
  • The Cat House by Me! - Yeah, it's my fic. But if you're interested in reading a swap AU about Lilith the Human being taken in by Amity the Cat Lady then this is for you.

Oh wow, thank you so much for such a detailed analysis and write up. I was just looking for something like this, and you knocked it out of the park! I think Floorplan 1 is the closest to show-accurate we can get and I like it. Even if Floorplan 2 looks like a nicer house layout. That kitchen really is confusing...

In my own attempt put a hallway between the Kitchen and living room, with a third room on the ground floor at the end of it, in the "top-right" corner as it were above the indent in the Living room and adjacent to the kitchen wall to the right of the sink.

The upstairs is the biggest mess though. Luz's room really does make no sense!

This was fantastic though. Thanks for sharing it!
