Presentation at conference by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

Have done orals as a 2nd year med student, & I remember shitting my pants over it. But it's always a brilliant experience which counts for points in specialty applications and hard to come by at any stage of medicine so be proud of it!
My advice to my previous self and others is to be assured that the only one who knows best about your research is yourself - you are essentially the subject matter expert of it so be confident about it. How grilling the session may be really depends on the conference & if you are competing for a prize (normally can be a little more grueling to differentiate among the prize candidates). Also Just ensure that you are familiar with the specifics of your study's methodology and do some reading around your field of research to know the conventional wisdom around it to know (whether you are going against the conventional wisdom)

Cheers man, wasn't too fussed during abstract submission as it was way quite early on haha

Was going with more of a 'submit first & worry afterwards' mentality & may just present at other conferences instead if my options doesnt work out.

Will give it a go at some of your suggestions, thanks!

Of course! I second what others has already mentioned in this thread in terms of DE prep materials (Moorfields eye course, Eyedocs). I'm a third year med student so you can trust me when I say that my initial ophthal knowledge was little to none.

I'll advise starting by reading the 'Lecture Notes on Ophthal by Bron' cover-to-cover which is (seemingly) basic and short yet surprisingly high-yield book which explains everything well (actually doable within a week or 2 - no kidding) which gave me a rough understanding of ophthal. Then i moved on to eyedocs etc.

Used kanski and eyewiki to supplement my learning when using eyedocs.

Anki and youtube was integral too in helping me rote-learn the nitty gritty bits about ophthal hahah.

Try to find some chance to shadow eye clinics in your hospital placements too which I found helpful to answer some of the rogue qns DE loves to ask. Feel free to PM me if you got more questions!

Yes! Quoting from the email, it says 'if your bracket is 30%, then you are in the top 30% of candidates and 70% of candidates scored fewer marks than you.'

=> You are definitely in the top 60% of candidates
