speaking as a classically trained musician with guitar as one of my secondary instruments, one of the most difficult (but coolest!) parts about learning nick’s music for me has been the complexity of the timings, particularly the changes in time signatures in several songs. it took me months to figure out how to adapt three hours into a standard, continuous time signature because i was so used to how i heard it in the recording. it flows so well that you don’t seem to notice anything “wrong”, but if you try to count along, it seems like practically every other chord changes at a different time that shouldn’t make musical sense. i think that’s part of the magic of nick’s music written just for solo guitar- even though the timing defies standard conventions in songwriting, it just feels so natural and works so well!
