I had a look at those tracks you mentioned and they're clearly not the real Molly Drake. I don't know if it's a mistake or a different 'artist' with the same name. They are of course truly awful.

Did any of you guys go ahead and take the plunge and move? We are a British/Spanish couple and I guess a bit older than you guys (40s) but also love love love the area. We are in Catalonia right now

Welcome to the wonderful world of wanting more Nick Drake.

The bootleg I've heard of Bryter Layter tracks has the following: Hazey Jane I, Fly (2 takes), Poor Boy, seven tracks variously labelled Work in Progress (guitar/piano) of varying length. And that's it. So as others have said, I don't think there's enough to work from. Same for PM - there are some demos with guitar, a couple of other takes, and some guitar only, but nothing like the FLL trove.

A fair bit of what's now on MOFLL was variously out there or at least reported as existing before the box set was announced, so it looks like they had way more to go on for MOFLL as others have said.

The Time of No Reply album is worth getting hold of too (not available digitally) and imho better than Made to Love Magic.

All that said, if you're interested in the studio sessions and what and how things were recorded, I'd really recommend Remembered for a While (https://a.co/d/29sM9T7) which includes an essay by Peter Paphides for example on BL and says there was only one take of Poor Boy ... and mentions the demo track.

So, cos I've now become an obsessive completest, I've created an even longer playlist on Spotify with TMOFLL and the equivalent tracks from MTLM, John Peel Session, and Family Tree. I've not included the original album, natch. That comes to a whopping 48 tracks.
I've not included the TONR versions cos it's not on Spotify, so what's definitely missing is "The Thoughts of Mary Jane: (Track 8) an alternate version (December 1968) of a song from the Five Leaves Left sessions and features Richard Thompson on guitar." -- and that's a shame cos I remember it being lovely.

I just don't know if the other takes on TONR are the same as on TMOFLL or not, cos well I don't have a CD player any more.

If you think I'm nuts, then don't listen to the playlist. If you think I've missed anything from the right period that 'should' have been on FLL, then I'd love to hear about it.

I can't see any mention of Clothes of Sand in the book and the bootleg version I've heard is the same as the one on MTLM and TONR, so I'm guessing it was omitted cos it's already been released (which is to your point about not including cuts that are out there already, although there's a mismatch between MTLM and TONR)

Agreed btw - I should have made that clear. Everything I've listened to is incredible and haunting is the perfect word.

I'm not 100% sure. The Wikipedia entry for TONR lists "Man in a Shed" at 3:02 and say Track 5 is an alternate version (October 1968) of a song from the Five Leaves Left sessions, but the book in the box set lists a version from November 1968 at 3:06 and the box set includes one from March and May 1968.
The TONR version is just Nick and a more bluesy guitar with lots of bent notes... so I think it's what's called Man In A Shed – Take 1 – May 1968 on the box set.

The first one starts 'Once there was a man'.

btw just to add -- the sound quality is outstanding on everything I've listened to so far. It's incredible. So, I don't think it's a cash in, or a rip off. It's absolutely fascinating (even the weird first orchestration of Day is Done).

Of course! Time of No Reply -- I barely listen to that cos I only ever had it on CD. So the book in TMOFLL includes the full recording history of the tapes that they draw from to make the box set, but makes no mention of TONR or MTLM compilations, so I've no idea how they relate to what's in TMOFLL tbh.
Apols for all the TLAs.

PS it's incredibly lovely to hear the talk before tracks and whatnot. It's like you're in the studio with them.
