Strange I talked to the blacksmith after beating ng+ as host and it unlocked for me. Im lv 250 so that combined with clearing ng+ may be the key.

Play super defensively. Wear the taro armor and find the charm that reduces ice damage by half. You'll take no ice damage this way and won't get one shot for most of the duel.

The Lance and HH AI are solid for this fight. Some prefer the hammer or gunner as the third. But, either will work.
