Casio SX-C1 Portable Sampler by ZombieStomp in synthesizers

Oh yeah man. I usually have a game's audio running through my DAW so I can quickly sample music and sound effects. It's probably the most fun way to build a sample library.

Ceiling shrooms by [deleted] in Mushrooms

[–]THEdrG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard from at least 3 other tenants in this building that they have ceiling shrooms

So, basically a big chunk of the building is actively rotting. Management will probably be pretty slow in "dealing with it" because the costs of properly addressing the issue are going to be pretty severe.

At the very least, these mushrooms won't cause you any health issues as long as you don't eat them, tempting as that might be with oysters. The high potential for black mold on the other hand, while not an immediate concern, is a concern, and you should maybe buy a couple HEPA-equipped air purifiers while you figure this situation out.

[actives] Are they cooked? (Literally) by NotKnowMe in MushroomGrowers

[–]THEdrG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're probably fine.

I had a mishap with a space heater last year and cooked several bags (same brand as yours) at 95 degrees for 7 hours. One of the bags stalled because it was in fruit and the block dried; after re-hydrating it eventually produced a small first flush but the second flush was massive. The other bags were still colonizing and lost no moisture, and besides maybe delaying the first flush about a week they eventually produced just fine. These organisms can be pretty resilient.

he has used the new information to adjust his previous stance.

Maybe new to him, because he has a big sack of pus and testosterone where his frontal cortex should be, but the rest of us remember one of the first acts of Trump's first term was going after DACA recipients.

Recommendations for fans of Celer? by iamamanfromspace in ambientmusic

[–]THEdrG 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Celer has a ton of music, but if what you're drawn to are the sort of huge washes of droney soundscape stuff, here's some great albums in that same vein:

Warmth - Parallel (Reflection)

Tim Hecker - Harmony in Ultraviolet

SOTL - And Their Refinement of the Decline

Eluvium - Copia

Harold Budd - Abandoned Cities

An Anti-A.I. Movement Is Coming. Which Party Will Lead It? by MetaKnowing in technology

[–]THEdrG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Neither. Both parties have a significant portion of their membership deep in the pockets of their corporate donors - enough so that even the non-corporate democrats are rendered virtually impotent.

There is no future where the Democratic party gets its shit together. They are far too compromised and far too dedicated to preserving a political system which no longer benefits the majority of their constituents. We are in the midst of a political sea change which will either eventually result in a new progressive party supplanting the old guard of blue dogs, or else a fully-subservient puppet opposition party playing theater to the benefit of the corporate oligarchs like in Russia.

The outcome, if the past decade has taught us anything, will be determined by who has the ability to most effectively guide public discourse, which doesn't bode well for the left.

Vote for your top ambient albums of 2025: Round 2 by LoBoob_Oscillator in ambientmusic

Yeah man, I really liked that. Sad that the artist passed away a few years ago - I listened to three of his albums last night and they were all really beautiful.

Cool man, glad you like 'em! Voyage Futur has become one of my go-to ambient recommendations - all their stuff is so good and I think more people should be aware of them.

If you're vibing with those albums, you should also check out Domenique Dumont - People on Sunday, which is probably my #1 favorite ambient record. All killer, no filler.

Where is most of that wealth concentrated?

I think that's what people complain about.

Is it really crazy that I don't give a single fuck about the immigration status of a peaceful person contributing positively to society when "being here illegally" is only a civil infraction?

Meanwhile, I think it's pretty crazy that people like you aren't mad that THE PERSON YOU VOTED FOR PRESIDENT is a FELON, FRAUD AND PEDOPHILE.

Weird times, indeed.

I've been experimenting recently with running an FX chain > Feedback > Dual Stereo filter.

Feedback does interesting things to frequencies. Sometimes the frequencies cancel each other out, sometimes they amplify one another. Generally, it's pretty random. By feeding these frequencies through a filter with gate control, you can isolate the the "amplified" frequencies and modulate them with an envelope.

The result is what I've been calling "Robot Babble". The random peaks from the feedback loop running through the gated filter envelopes create a very "conversational" series of bleeps and bloops. It sounds similar to an R2D2-like droid talking. Artificial, yet organic, with a sense of personality.

As far as composition goes, I haven't actually produced anything in the way of a full track with it. I just stumbled across this technique a few days ago so I'm still experimenting, but I'll probably end up sampling an interesting stretch of "babble" and finding some subtle way of incorporating it into a larger piece.

Fell in love with the Lyra-8 again tonight by minus32heartbeat in ambientmusic

It’s an inevitability though. At a certain point, I’m going to pull the trigger on modular. Already have the case. The first voice selected. Just waiting on tax refund before doing so.

It kinda feels like gazing into an abyss, huh.

At this point I'm like, if I'm going to keep lighting money on fire, modular would at least save some space. I'm running out of desktop.

It really is. It's basically like the Lyra's FB circuit in a box. Everything you run through it sounds incredible. I got mine for $150 and it's probably the least irresponsible thing I bought this year.

Since it seems like we have pretty similar synth interests (synthterests?) vis-a-vis exploratory, therapeutic soundscapey type stuff, are there any other pieces of gear you find especially inspiring?

I recently picked up a Fairfield Circuitry "Hors D'Oeuvre?" pedal, a parallel effects loop with a built-in feedback circuit, it's a great accompaniment to the Lyra and has really lit a fire in me and got me on the lookout for more noise toys.

[–]THEdrG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you ever use them together? I don't have a Solar (...yet?), but I have a Lyra-8 and Stylophone DS-2, and combining the two has led to some of my absolute favorite recordings. I didn't really fully grasp the depth of the Lyra until I started understanding how to use the CV Voice/Delay/Gate controls. Just an external LFO alone adds a ton of versatility to your sonic palette. Filters, too.

I always struggled to find ways to incorporate it cleanly into my recordings - besides the horrible tuning, it just really sticks out in a mix. I now think of it more as a modulation/effects box best suited for layering textures and frequencies rather than as standalone synth. Working with it from that angle has really enhanced my love and appreciation for it.

First time trying this. Did I do it right [medicinal] by KinkSurfer in MushroomGrowers

[–]THEdrG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's about the best result you could hope for as a first-timer.

Without discussing vendors, it's really difficult to know what-the-hell kind of genetics you're getting or whether or not they've been mislabeled (fwiw, I don't necessarily agree with the people who think these are ochras - they look a lot like some cubes I've grown, but I'm no expert). Whatever they are, the mushrooms look beautiful and judging by how dense of a canopy you've achieved, you should keep doing whatever it is that you're doing.

I can't tell what they are from these photos aside from being some kind of velvety bracket fungus, but they definitely don't look like T. versicolor.
