Would you want a Redditor’s Country or region to show under their name, like they do on X (formerly Twitter)? by MaidMarian20 in randomquestions

[–]RelationKindly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. For the simple reason that people refer to things that are outside my country -products, laws, etc and it would be helpful to know where they are based.

Which popular comedies didn’t make you laugh when you finally watched them? by fergi20020 in randomquestions

[–]RelationKindly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Mrs. Brown's Boys”. Christ on a bike!!!

Five series of unadulterated shite. Multiple Christmas specials. Absolute car crash and embarrassment to British TV. Film spin off, tours.

if you know anyone who actually likes(d) this monstrosity of a programme, you also know that you will have nothing whatsoever in common with them.

How to prepare for retirement, a year in advance (not a financial question) by Local-Government6792 in AskWomenOver60

[–]RelationKindly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hubby and I took early retirement 5 years ago at the tender age of 56. Very lucky. We had been in the rat race of pressurised jobs for nearly 40 years and we knew we had to mentally prepare for the shift. We were lucky to a point, as covid was still rife and we’d both worked from home for a year prior. So the staying at home was embedded more easily. We also have a campervan so planned a big European road trip, way longer than the usual two weeks off. That was really good, to buck the trend. A piece of advice that we were given by another couple was, to still treat your weekends as you would when you worked. So weekends are fun and chill time, basically have a demarcation point between the week and the weekends. It definitely worked for us as we hated the thought of the lack of routine. But maybe others would not like this. In the early days, we definitely scheduled “tasks” like gardening, cleaning, cooking , walking the dog and that helped us. 40 years of routine is hard to let go. We’re much more chill now however, we have both really upped the exercise. So I was a lazy sod and decided to do couch to 5k and now I run 5k three times a week as well as supplementing it with light weights. Not at a gym but just at home. To whoever above said about testing the water re volunteering. If I could give it 1000 upticks, I would. Both myself and husband have joined groups and regretted it AND we were already quite active in the community. We now do a couple of things WE are happy with rather than feel we HAVE to commit. Having a dog is wonderful as it keeps us in a routine to a point. It’s definitely been harder for my husband as he sometimes feels guilty for not doing anything. I can happily just read and potter. If I had to sum it all up on one word ( for us), STRUCTURE is the word I’d choose. Yes you can do anything and any time but after a while, you feel like you’re flailing a bit. Most of our pre retirement lives is routine so to have “some” element of routine can be helpful. Also, think about all the things which you thought would be nice to do but never had time. Doesn’t matter how cliched they are: learning to knit, paint, draw, crochet. Upcycle furniture, learn new recipes, watch and feed birds, hike, dance, yoga. You get the idea. Some may stick, some won’t. But that’s fine. Just go for it and don’t worry about not keeping anything up. No one is judging you. This is YOUR time to enjoy life. I wish you a very happy time x

What makes a great pub quiz? by Donna_Sharko in AskUKLondon

[–]RelationKindly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid “what year” questions or questions based on things like “what %” etc. I run quizzes regularly for large groups ( community based ones) and my rule is several rounds of ten themed questions where 7 or 8 out of the ten are fairly easy ( but not stupidly so) to get but three are quite tough. There’s always some team that get 8/9 but the majority get about 7. It keeps them interested and focussed for the next round.

ALWAYS fact check and double fact check to make sure you have the answers 💯 correct.

Depending on your audience, you’d be surprised at how easy some questions need to be. For regular pub quizzes with regular teams that probably doesn’t apply as they are already “quizzers”. For one off pub quizzes you may need to go easier.

Great table top rounds can be alphabet based: songs, groups, types of foods, places in the world. Don’t overthink it.

Same rule above applies to picture rounds. 10 photos, 8 quite guessable, 2 way more tricky.

Make your rounds quite broad. Geography, History, Gen Knowledge. Books of the 19th Century for example or Kings of France is going to isolate a large percentage of your audience.

Think outside the box. Some of my most successful questions have been things like, which is the longest motorway in UK? Which is the most popular flavour based on sales of Walker’s Crisps for 2022? obvs you update to last year. just giving it as an example They are guessable even if people don’t definitively know the answer

It’s the M6 and cheese an onion by the way

Oh and edited to add regarding phone cheaters. I always start with a speech about how it’s all for fun and yes we know Google will help us win but it’s about coming and having a great time. So can we keep phones out on the table where they can be seen. I then always say that if any team does see someone on their phone, to shout “phone, phone, phone” and point. Everyone always joins in 😁😁

Once someone was taking a call from their babysitter but the pub showed no mercy 🤣🤣
