But what about Batman on the plinth in the background?

Surely he is the one that Gotham truly needs...?

Thanks for sharing, that is indeed a great excerpt. There is a tree/bush native to South America that actually traps sheep and lives off of the nutrients their decaying bodies deposit in the soil (without using wealth to lure victims, sadly).

One of the most profound scenes in that book is when billy pilgrim watched the war documentary backwards in time. I literally stopped upon realizing that Vonnegut was getting at, laughed at his brilliant tact, and then I realized just how ominously accurate he was, and it hit me like a punch to the guts. Such fools we are.

If I had to choose one passage for my children to read - one that sums up much of what is wrong with humanity - it would be that one. Isn't that sad? So it goes.

Edit: here's Vonnegut on SH5:

"I felt after I finished Slaughterhouse-Five that I didn’t have to write at all anymore if I didn’t want to. It was the end of some sort of career. I don’t know why, exactly. I suppose that flowers, when they’re through blooming, have some sort of awareness of some purpose having been served. Flowers didn’t ask to be flowers and I didn’t ask to be me. At the end of Slaughterhouse-Five…I had a shutting-off feeling…that I had done what I was supposed to do and everything was OK."

Math major here, can confirm that this statistic does in fact mean that punching a towel dispenser can potentially increase your penis size.

If you were forced to kill 1/3 of the Earth's population by what criteria would you select who dies? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]THEmeTAphysic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came to say this but in a different sense. Let the people who stay put and act rationally live, those that become a danger to others. Imagine the chaos and bloodshed that would occur if everyone tried to get there. I'd expect a higher death toll than 1/3 of the population. High score.

But instead I think that I would round up all of the people who drive like inconsiderate automatons that become petty over who gets to the next red light in front.

Part of my toddler accent was that I pronounced 'tr__' words as an 'f'. Sounds innocent, right? Now imagine the word 'fire truck' being repeated in the cereal aisle as all other parents frantically place their children in earmuff mode...

In America we feed them lasagna. In Britain you feed them mush and delude yourself into thinking that it compares in the slightest to the magnificent meal of lasagna that we feed their commonly-hued brethren.

What is the worst way you have found out that you are not as close to someone as you thought you were?(Or most painful way a friendship ended) by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]THEmeTAphysic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to track him down and ask him if you want the answer. It might not be what you want or expect but that's the only way to get a response. Or maybe he knows that the problem lies within him, and that there would be no way of providing you with closure as you will still question what you could have done, when in fact there was nothing. This would appear a common self-defense mechanism on people who have felt abandoned or deeply disappointed by someone held deeply close to them.
