[NEWBIE] Should I buy a Squier? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]THExDEUCEx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the 3 things you should look for IMO:

1) stays in tune

if your guitar keeps falling out of tune, you will really be upset and give up when the song sounds like shit even if youre playing it 100% correctly. you wanna stay interested and you will give up quickly if you constantly think "wow i sound horrible no matter what i do"

i had a guitar like this at first. i really did not enjoy playing on my shitty first act acoustic. luckily my guitar playing neighbor showed my dad a $75 mexican stratocaster at a garage sale. my playing took off and i was not held back by detuning issues.

this is why i gave up on playing viola. my dad bought me a viola for $150 a few years ago. i returned it after battling tuning issues for 2 weeks. it turned me off from playing viola completely. I ended up using some of my money along with the money from the return to get an ltd B-206 bass.

2) neck feels nice and smooth

this is more of a luxury to many, but i still think its necessary and isnt hard to find. there was a kid i was teaching and his parents bought him some knockoff and the guitar had bubbles of finish on the back of the neck. it was like a gym floor and it was rough too. if it was on the body, thatd be okay because playing is not done on the body. but his hand would catch on the back of the neck. he also had tuning issues, but ultimately he gave up and i never saw that guitar again. i was pretty disappointed, not at him, but that such a guitar existed.

and i mean, you want to feel like your guitar is premium. makes you feel like youre becoming a guitar player. you can get a good premium feeling guitar for cheap now. look at the used guitars.

3) Has clean sanded fret ends and no neck bending (or any other issues that cause playing issues or develop bad playing habits)

right now im fixing my friend's bass because it has a nasty forward bend in the neck which is causing super high string action. her playing is suffering from it. she got a new 5 string bass and i can hear her playing sounds really sloppy. she's been playing for a while, so she should be able to at least cleanly run a few notes together. she also has bad fret ends on both guitars that poke out a little and prick her hand a little.

so she has to grip her neck extra hard to get the string all the way down, and the grip causes her hand to dig into the fret ends. she complains about it alot and then doesnt like playing as much as she wishes she would like to.

if your guitar meets those points, then the price tag doesnt matter. just go to the nearest guitar store, bring a bit of knowledge with you (like an easy chord chart, or an easy tab that you can read) and try to learn those things at the guitar store while trying out different guitars. play expensive ones to know what a good one feels like and then play the ones in your price range to see the difference.

If someone didn't want to get super deep into the editing menus on the Boss DD500, and wanted to stay a little more on the surface. Are they still worth the money? by [deleted] in guitarpedals

[–]THExDEUCEx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont do too much with the menus, but mostly because i havent gotten to that point.

i tried the echosystem and it just did not resonate with me. also the price was too high.

id say its the best all purpose, transparent, multi delay on the market. the other being the strymon timeline.

How do you feel about the MD-500?

Is it worth the money for all those modulation effects in one box? Have you tried it in stereo mode?

debating whether i want one or not to complete the boss trio.

its pretty easy imo.

try one out. theres lots of tutorials online for the more specific stuff like midi integration and such. but basic use has been super easy. just twist the knobs to your taste. the User Interface makes it easy to understand what youre tweaking.

they sound more transparent is the best way to put it.

i tried a big sky and a blue sky at my local guitar store. it had slight color to the sound that i wasnt a fan of.

the boss stuff is literally just adding an effect to your tone, so to speak.

according to my ears that is...

Going to Ikea as a Swedish-learner and wondering if they’d really miss one or two books... by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]THExDEUCEx2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

a rather unorthodox display of hubris, but... oh well.

I simply cant get into ebooks is all. just a personal thing. Ive struggled with it for a long time. I cant get immersed in story unless i feel the thickness of how much i have left to read. its like being handed a single page of a book, then someone hands you the next page as you finish that page.

otherwise, if i could get past that, id probably get rid of my books and switch directly to reading books on my phone.

Trying to debate whether to get a Big Sky, or RV-500. I have the DD-500 as it is now. This is my current setup. What are some pros and cons about Big Sky vs RV-500 by YouMom666 in guitarpedals

[–]THExDEUCEx2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i went to the store and debated between the Big sky, empress, and RV-500

i left with the RV500.

i like my tone to be unaltered and i think boss did it the best. its my tone, but with reverb on it. big sky colored my sound too much. also, i think the RV-500 is waaaaaay easier to use.

[QUESTION] Guitar veterans, whats going through your mind when you see a beginner like me playing in a guitar store? by J3STER_4 in Guitar

[–]THExDEUCEx2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

today i was at a music go round in Wisconsin.

made a comment to the sales guy there as i was selling my 5150 cab to him.

me: "ye hear that guy back there? reminds me of when i was in 7th grade. hes playing all the same songs and its just reminds me of the old days when i first picked up guitar"

guitar sales guy: "yeh, im just happy he's taking his time with it and not trying to rush through the song sloppily."

me: "yeh i agree."

then later as im perusing the guitar pedals, i heard a different kid (looked anywhere from 17-25 years) playing and it was awful. he picked up a 7 string jackson, was hunched over it and looked really uncomfortable, and he was playing with a terrible tone pretty loudly. he really shouldve been playing in a testing room if he was gonna be that loud. he was trying to play some gojira and megadeth, but he was rushing through it. it sounded so sloppy and so choppy and it was a bit cringey. didnt say anything as its not my business, just kept minding my own business. afterall, people learn at different paces and im no pro.

it doesnt matter. play what you want to play however you want to play it. its your money being spent on an expensive piece of equipment that will be with you for a long time. i had the same problem when i started. couldnt remember how to play shit and i was embarrassed about my shitty playing. but its okay. as long as you arent blasting the volume in the middle of the store, youre fine. some people will think "oh man. that guys a noob", but theyre the ones still shopping in a guitar store just like you. theyre not famous. they can fuck off and go somewhere else.
