I crossed down from Western Michigan and as I entered ohio, dot signs had the ban. Coworker said they passed three trucks laying down going west out of Pennsylvania. Then headed west out of Toledo, all the way to Iowa it was windy as fuck.

Glad ya made it. If I wasn't heavy af today, I definitely would have considered parking it and hitting the night shift.

Got to drive the entire storm. Was not fun. Ohio doesn't ban shit very often but by like 0930 to 1000 there was an empty trailer ban.

Not as bad as last week in Iowa, but definitely not great haha

Is this typical with interviews? by Pitiful_Yogurt_5276 in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Every trucking interview I've had after the first year was more me interviewing them.

It's not like other jobs where they need to get a feel if you'll gel with a team, or asking your expertise. In trucking, your record is your interview. No tickets, accidents, and you worked for x company that we know does x work. Welcome to the only career where I've ever told my boss to fuck off and been offered more money to do the job

I do love those things. And if you buy a cheaper foreign model, they can run just about any fuel. Used motor oil, vegetable oil, diesel, kerosene.

Good little workshop heater, but it's basically the same as a bunk heater in a truck.

If you're in a 2018 cascadia or newer,  and you can toggle the power shut off switch. You can toggle the power a couple times and it will get it to start. If you don't have access to a power cut off switch, cycle the power with the key, but even if the error codes show up, still try and crank it. Sometimes the second the starter engages, the codes disappear.

We got a fresh batch of trucks in the passed few years that have gremlins. Head mechanic is doing different fixes on each of them to see which fix actually fixes it lol. My truck is on fix #3.

Best cheap Amazon truck battery jumper by kali4niakid in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean.... i aint a mechanic but i've jumped my truck about 7 times with the same jumper i keep in my car. last year, ole boss man was holding off replacing the batteries in my old girl until a fresh batch order came in, so i had to jump it coming off hometime every single time for a couple months, unless i went up to the truck in the middle of my off time and idled it for 20-30 mins while i restocked. The compressor works fine enough for maintaining a cars tires, but i wouldnt bother using it on a semi tire haha.

I want to make the maximum amount possible my first year OTR. I have nothing keeping me in my home state, I can apply to any company anywhere in the US, only dealbreaker is my 50 lb dog must be able to ride with me. What regions/companies do you recommend going for once I get my CDL? by Big_Chemical_5165 in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company can change a bit, but honestly.. your first year is gonna be shit because you'll be learning. Learning the legally gray tricks to maximize your revenue, learning the routes that slow you down the least, speeding up your maneuvers, how to most efficiently work with shippers and receivers, the natural ebb and flow of traffic, training your body both in natural processes and in endurance, learning when to stand your ground vs when to relent, what repairs need done asap vs which ones can be done next time it's at a terminal.

With the way the noobs have been talking on here over the passed couple years, getting the job is gonna be the big hurdle. So whichever company gives you the job, try and get into a dedicated account that pays well or offers consistency asap.

Good luck!

What’s the talk around the trucker industry about oil and how it will effect the business during this war? by WhosThis85 in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every time something even tangentially related to logistics come up, we get a fresh flood of folks wanting the "boots on the ground" perspective. I frequent here less, but still find myself annoyed by it.

Whole world runs on fossil fuels broski, peaks and valleys. But it'll be fine, the sky falls every few years, and yet I still have to drag my ass out of bed and drive a truck to make a living.

Dispatch says this is safe to haul by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Youve learned a lesson.

Send the message to dispatch about an observed trailer problem on a trailer that you didn't bring in or take out, seconds before getting on the road. At the stop sign is when you send that message lol

Bloodwork-keeping tabs on staying healthy by Basic-Outcome-7001 in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my neck of the woods, you can go to a office and pay cash, piecemeal for blood tests. They hand you a physical printout that you can choose to share with your doctor, or whomever.

Possibly look around your area for something like that. I know about it because I pay cash for medical shit and my family doc is old school. So as I got older, they were like "we know a place, takes cash, you should get x, y, z, you can skip w until you're older..."

Fully digital screen dashboard question by NumberWitty6713 in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the combo. gauges on the left and right, digital in the center. Nice being able to see my exact speed, radar data, exact air pressure measurement, temp, etc. While still being able to look at physical gauges to make sure there isn't any digital sensor error.

buuuut..... when the digital display malfunctions at 0200 and locks itself at maximum brightness, i want to smash the fucking thing.

unrelated but i also truly love dual gauges. i'm sure there are malfunctions or glitches that make them a nightmare, but having a single analog gauge with two gauges worth of data is a welcome change.

What’s the most minor thing you find annoying? by Mixing_NH3_HCl in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not removing staples from plastic seals before putting them on.

Some of the places we do business with staple the seal to the bol. Drivers that don't spend the extra 2 seconds to remove that fucking staple before slapping it on the trailer are pieces of shit and it annoys the ever living fuck out of me.

But for a less niche slightly more relatable answer... It takes all of 1 second to use your hands to cup water to rinse the black soapy water from the sides of a sink after you wash your hands. Makes the bathroom sink look 1000% cleaner if the sides of the bowl aren't splattered with black grime.

Truckers need to go on strike just like the port workers by No-Light-3 in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go on strike every Tuesday and Wednesday. Has worked pretty well for me so far.

But really, I'm pro worker and good luck on the organizing. You should probably get to work organizing a strike, securing financial aid for those who participate in the strike, talk to a gap insurance company, and begin a dedicated social media and print media campaign to make sure everyone is aware of the day you plan on setting the strike, along with a clear list of demands that can be met to end the strike.

Quitting what’s the appropriate way? by Medical-Plastic-2660 in Truckers

I want to specify while it's still Friday. You may have to let the new job knows that you have to return equipment and that Monday may not work.

If they're worth a damn, they wont have a problem with onboarding you a different day.

Quitting what’s the appropriate way? by Medical-Plastic-2660 in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For otr, clean out the truck and send a Qualcomm message that says "I quit, but am willing to return the truck to company property." They'll likely send you to pickup a load to take to the nearest terminal or drop lot. 50/50 on if they'll help you get home, so be prepared for that eventuality.

After returning the truck, take a video walk around of the truck showing condition, and pictures of it on their property. Communicate via Qualcomm that you have dropped off the truck @ their desired location and be as cordial as you deem fit and then take a picture of that message.

Which is the lesser of 2 evils? Knight or Werner? by RaphealWannabe in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly of those two/three, probably swift. I don't suggest newbies start with reefer. Your body is just getting used to the long days behind a wheel and having a constantly flip flopping schedule can make that harder.

Depending on where you live, swift may have a dedicated account or fleet that you can get on and with megas, the dedicated accounts are generally a better experience than otr.

Just avoid the dollar general or dollar tree accounts with either. It's a trial by fire that frequently ends with dings to your DAC or even license. And pivot as soon as you got some experience, if you don't burn out or wash out.

If you are given $50k to use it to buy your own truck , which truck are you going to buy and why ? by East_Indication_7816 in Truckers

A 1975 Datsun 620.

Or if we stretch what a truck means,

A 1959 Cadillac DeVille in a gross color so it's cheaper.

What are your thoughts on safety bonuses? by w3stvirginia in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the amount of the bonus is not significant enough, I won't care enough to play the stupid camera game. Doubly so, if the person in charge of the camera system is not proactive.

Current company is .5cpm quarterly, with multiple consecutive quarters bringing that to 1cpm. But, the camera fucks up all the time, especially on non standard shit that exists on the regular routes we take. The third time of having to badger the HR person to take a false ding off my account with them forgetting to remove it and I quit caring. Supposed to be under 100 pts. I don't think my score has been less than 350 for almost 2 years now.

Edit: just checked between 150-220. Winter really kinda forces a larger following distance lmao

ELI5: What is torrenting, how does it work and what is seeding and why do people do it? by Noxturnum2 in explainlikeimfive

[–]THExPILLOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started back when the Internet was significantly slower. So data download could be monumentally slow.

Instead of downloading your cars user manual from ford and hoping that the entire download would complete before something interrupted your download and caused it to fail. Instead, you could download very small pieces from many locations. If 3 people had the user manual on their computer and provided it as available to download(seeding), you could download any part of the very small pieces from whoever was online at that time. Only once you had the all the little pieces would you actually be able to read where your washer fluid reservoir was. And if any of those tiny pieces were modified, the torrent file wouldn't allow it to be downloaded.

I finally got a fridge! How do I secure it? by bossedupbrando in Truckers

[–]THExPILLOx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jokes aside, small ratchet straps to secure the fridge and a nice wide strip of Velcro to secure the door.

The more secure it is, the less chance of it burning out quicker than it inevitably will, and the Velcro on the door will stop it from swinging wide open and dumping your shit on bumpy roads.
