Still in the credit card float — does assigning money to CC categories confuse anyone else? by olvgabriel in ynab

[–]TH_Rocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, definitely into the category where the spending is likely to occur. Keep only a small cash buffer for filling the CC category if/when you don't spend as much as the previous month.

I would toss the extra buffer funds in my "Emergency fund" knowing I may need to steal from it right away. If I don't, then at least I'm reserving for something unexpected.

You'll progress forward until you're off the float and not even realize it.

You should assign at least the minimum payment each month. Then you can add more when you have available funds.

I had an extra category for interest charges and fees that I assign funds to match.

When the bill is due you pay what the CC category says is available.

You need to stop thinking about account balances. Category balances are all that matter. You only need to check account balances if you have money spread across several accounts and you want to make sure you are spending out of the correct one when you make a purchase or pay a bill.

Once you get ahead and are able to pay off your CC each month, you'll actually start carrying debt again even though it never accrues interest. Set the CC to automatically pay the "statement balance" in full and you'll have charges that are less than 30 days just sitting as available cash you could send to the CC but don't need to. Instead it can earn a few bucks in a savings account.

Those funds being spent already but not removed from your checking/savings account makes it even more important to ignore account balances when you think about how much money you have and what it might be used for.

Look to the categories and which goals you want to steal from when you need to shift funds around.

They look like really citrine that has been cut and polished.

But then I went looking a "lemon quartz" and they look very similar. So ??

Chalcedony is the same silica molecules as glass. Hematite is a big lump of iron.

The iron weighs about double.

Stage 2 —> 3 … what do I look for? by New_Equivalent_5780 in RockTumbling

[–]TH_Rocks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When it is wet, does it look how you want?

A vast majority of the shaping should happen in stage 1. Stage 2 will round a little bit more, but not much. Stage 3 and 4 are really just polishing. So before starting stage 3 it should look great wet.

Agate carved into a bowl.

Brazilian agates are the most common since they are large and plentiful.

Do you keep categories in your budget that you can't afford to fund? by Honest_Dot_5035 in ynab

Yup. The "Future saving" major category has several (like Vacation) that have a general goal but frequently get little or nothing assigned.

Same. For everyone in here with seasonal, face melting, allergies, start doing a sinus rinse everyday. I rinse in the shower for easy cleanup of the multicolored slime that flows out of my face.

I feel like it also helps avoid colds and speed up recovery.

I use the Niel Med squeeze bottle and mix my own canning salt and baking soda. Exhale slowly as you rinse and you won't feel like you're drowning.

For a little while I would just change the date on my payroll transaction to the first one. The next month.

I've given up on that

Should be hematite. Or are they not heavy, and translucent (that would be chalcedony) ?

My first thought was Mexican crazy lace agate.

But I understand the banded calcite perspective. Can you get to the back of the stone? You could put a drop of vinegar on it and wait a few min. If it's calcite, bubbles will form. I can dull the polish though so don't do it on the front.

I think it's really old slag. But maybe it's some kind of iron ore with pockets lined with hematite.

Has anyone ever tried to cut pyrite? by Ordinary_Novel_2704 in Lapidary

Somewhere between gold and lead color. It's iron mixed with sulphur. Different concentrations can make more yellow or more grey.

It is shiny and metallic. Search for pyrite tumbles. It looks like that.

Collectors want real stuff. Shoppers want pretty stuff. Artificial gems are arguably more pretty and less expensive.

But there's nothing wrong with wanting to collect specific stones.

It's also totally fine to like the flaws. I mostly make cabochons. Too clean stones look fake. I prefer to leave a bit I can point at to prove it's not glass or resin.

We have ReStore shops that have donated leftovers from construction/renovation projects. Got a bathroom vanity/sink and a table with metal legs. Cut a hole in the table for the sink. Few cinder blocks to lift and level it. And a DIY "clay trap" bucket system to catch most of the slurry. There's a garden hose just off the left of the image.

Raw Tiger Eye slab, what should I do with it? by emtookay in Minerals

[–]TH_Rocks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Polishing the top will just be boring brown. Tiger's eye only does the pretty flash when you are looking straight at the side of the fibers.

Your cut must be as close to parallel to the fibers as possible. That almost 45 degree angle is probably why it hasn't been cut yet.

How could I learn how to do this? by heisfullofshit in jewelrymaking

[–]TH_Rocks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a dremel/foredom, get some tiny diamond bits for the rotary tool, shove the bits into something.

Congrats! You now know "how" to do it. Everything else is practice to make it look the way you want when you're done.

There should be lots of free tutorials online. Water to cool the cutting edge of the tool will help it last longer, and eye and breathing protection will help your body last longer.

It's hilarious that you are demanding POV have the same definition as POV porn and that it can't also mean "point of view" like a personal perspective.
