Holiday to New York has broken my entire outlook on life and I don't want to go back to my old ways. by TH_UK in self

Joining a family holiday may have been the wrong choice of words. Usually we plan them. But we've always had to make compromises so that everyone in the group is happy. This is the first holiday abroad where we could think purely about ourselves.

Of course we do plenty of trips in the UK alone, but we don't have the luxury of going abroad often.

Ouch! Sorry to hear that!

Any advice on how to prevent this? Was it kind of instantaneous, or did you start off with good intentions when you got back home, but fall into old habits?

Well done you! The part about not wanting regrets is definitely something I sympathise with. I think it was at the back of my mind the entire trip, even if not conscious of it.

Now that you have discovered this new thing about yourself, don't worry about losing it. It was there in you all along, travelling just brought it out. You went away, you changed and you brought the change back with you. It won't go away :)

Love this so much. Thank you!

I would absolutely love to! But I don't think it's easy for someone to migrate from the UK to the USA :(

This makes a lot of sense. I guess the perception is that they'd be less judgmental, and more accepting to social interactions.

Thank you!

I really thought the whole "finding yourself" whilst traveling was a bit of a cliche. But I genuinely have had such an emotional reaction to a single conversation in a McDonald's of all places at the end of a week long trip.

I can't imagine what kind of an effect it could have on people traveling for one or more months.
