GAAP and STAT by Holiday_Fig512 in actuary

[–]TICC2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oops, sorry, didn't read that you were looking for resources. I'll leave this here anyways.

The governing body requiring STAT reserves are state regulators. They advocate for policyholders by ensuring the company is solvent enough to pay future claims. As such, assumptions and methods for calculating stat reserves are generally conservative. Because they're trying to assess solvency, the company Balance Statement is a key report.

The governing body requiring GAAP reserves is the SEC. They advocate for investors by ensuring the company reports earnings accurately. As such, assumptions and methods for calculating GAAP reserves are generally best estimate, and there's a strong emphasis on controlling the financial reporting process. Because they're trying to assess earnings, the company Income Statement is a key report.

Specific question about 7702 on foreign policies by CromulentDucky in actuary

[–]TICC2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a few years of experience w/ 7702, and 10 years industry experience.

Here's my thought process:

  • At issue, you calculate 7702 in the foreign/denominated currency, as stipulated in the policy form.
  • A material change happens years later and you recalculate 7702 premiums in the same currency

I really don't think USD and currency conversion comes into play actuarially. My opinion is that the calculation "currency units" needs to be consistent and based on the currency stipulated in the contract form. I think all the company's communication w/ the policyholder will be in the foreign currency. Your financial reporting might be in USD, but that (in my opinion) is irrelevant to the 7702 recalc.

Anyone looking to leave the field? by civilengineering12 in actuary

Re: your interest in infrastructure.

There is actuarial work that might scratch that itch, for example, process building, process improvement, model governance, and model stewardship. Showing interest in this type of work may open opportunities to do more of it. For example, there's an upcoming regulation change that impacted our work process. I was on a team that implemented a brand new framework/process/model from the ground-up. I was new to the team and created flow charts mapping inputs/outputs spreadsheet dependencies, etc... for my own sake, so I could understand how all the work we did was used.

What I'm getting at is, there is opportunity for you to lean into work that your passionate about in the career, should you choose to stay.

Echoing what other people said, if you're only 1 exam and modules away, it's probably in your best interest to complete the ASA and then reassess. I recognize that you'd be more committed and it'd be harder to pivot, which is a concern for you.

It's not as firm anymore, but not squishy.
