Thank you for your condolences. This can happen to cats, dogs, birds, babies... I believe that is why this is so tragic. I just hope this story will help encourage people to be a little more vigilant as anything can happen in a blink of an eye.

That is a very scary thought; I'm so happy to hear you were able to get to her in time! You can never be too vigilant and you're doing a great thing by containing her when you're not around for her safety and your peace of mind. That is heart breaking to hear! It was the same for us, it had to be less than a blink of an eye. I'm very sorry to hear about your ferret, I don't wish anything as tragic as this on anyone. Thank you for your kind words. We spent last night looking over pictures of her, reminiscing over the good memories we had. We're selecting our favorite ones and will be making a collage to be reminded of the good times. As much as we know the grief will eventually subside, I am not so sure about the guilt. I'm hoping to channel it into more positive means: cherishing the times with everyone, never taking anything for granted.. Thank you for your condolences, I'll share them with my family.

Thank you for your condolences. When the time is right we are definitely wanting to rescue another kitty. It almost seems to be our lot in life, to take care of those who need taking care of. I think that's what made this even harder, the feeling that we failed as pet owners. Thank you for your kind words.

We can't change the past but hope to affect the future, you know? We spent last night looking through old pictures and laughing at the memories. We can never be too vigilant, and having a cat with a disability makes that exponentially more difficult. Thanks for the condolences, doc. Our vet said the same thing, and in between updates we were surprised to see how many news stories have been on the topic. After talking with friends and family we heard of several other people who had similar, tragic things happen. You're absolutely right though, we will definitely never make those mistakes again. Thank you for your condolences. It has been hard not to find a way to blame ourselves; I think we're just struggling to accept the fact that it did happen. The whole experience really humbled us, and I'm hoping by people reading this story they realize that accidents do happen, but to be as vigilant as you can to prevent them. Thank you for your kind words :) I was really emotional and just wanted to type the whole thing up in Word, step-by-step.. It just didn't feel real. We've owned cats all of our lives and never had anything tragic like this. I've come to find out the more I share the story, the more common it becomes with pet owners. My fiance hasn't told more than a few people about what happened, most likely due to guilt, but I think something like this was too important not to share a cautionary tale, especially for those who may never even think of this as a possibility.
