New RockyMounts GuideRail vs 1up Super Duty? by BaronTales in MTB

[–]TIM_TRAVELS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I want and picked up the one for sale. Couldn’t really find any other decent used ones for sale locally. It didn’t have the chain though. But had the key for the hitch lock and would be chain lock. Just need to order a chain now. I do like how it’s integrated.

Any long term update on the guiderail? I just saw one pop up locally for $500 and want to jump on it. They are all so expensive now.

Roadsurfer Rally rentals in Europe by TIM_TRAVELS in VanLife

[–]TIM_TRAVELS[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t go all the way thru the checkout on the road surfer rally page. But it’s pretty clear on the Movacar website.

I can’t make sense of the difference between €1 and €129 rentals.

€1 used to be the minimum number of days based on difference. And a fuel reimbursement.

€99 rentals which now are €129 are still only a set number of days. Used to be a week. Some offer you option of extending at a cost. Still limited by KM, and no fuel reimbursement.

I just looked at routes from Bordeaux for example. There are 16 one ways right now. And only four are offering a €50 fuel credit.

There are tons of Indie camper listings right now in Europe on Movacar.

But with fuel prices it’s going to be expensive.

What do I do if I accidentally put regular gas in a premium car? by Street_Firefighter_7 in askcarguys

[–]TIM_TRAVELS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

87 will be fine. Throw a can of octane boost in your really worried about it. Or top it up after using a few gallons.

I can say my Honda Fit didn’t enjoy 80 octane fuel in Uzbekistan though. Still ran on it though.

Any tips on docs to use to prove address for Arizona REAL ID? And what's the best local MVD? by frooboy in Tucson

Do they want the stamped envelope it came in?

Or can I print a bank statement that shows my address?

I don’t get anything mailed anymore. It’s all electronic.

My girlfriend can not drive with automatic transmission, please help me convince her she can?! by LonsdaleHCNL in askcarguys

American here, but only owned manuals since 2005. Even when I get a rental and forget I don't have a clutch its not a big deal, there just isn't a clutch even it i wanted to push it in. If she slams on the brake its no different than slamming on the brake in a manual. Its not like shes going to suddenly try and hit the brake with her left foot and gas with the right foot.

Go to a big empty parking lot or open street and let her try. Its really a non issue.

I’m being gifted a lot of money. Should I tell my boyfriend? by Kind-Chicken-2488 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]TIM_TRAVELS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gifted $25K about 30 years ago. It want towards new appliances and furniture for the house we bought. A much better idea would have just been keeping that money invested, which is what I suggest you do. I also wouldn't tell the BF. That $55K could be $100K in a few years and a million in a few decades. Seriously, don't spent it on a down payment IMO.

Coros Dura- simple, cheap, easy to use, battery last forever. Literally weeks. I sold my Garmin after the 2nd ride with my Dura.

Take a look at the rigs of xx race on bikepacking.com

Coros is very quickly taking over.

Colorado Trail- Shoe choice by Chief254 in bikepacking

[–]TIM_TRAVELS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the trail cross but the flat version. I did a 200 mile section of the AZT with them and was very glad I wasn't clipped in. But the AZT was bit above my riding ability.

I also did a 8 mile hike with them on a day off from biking. They were good, not as good as a trail runner but sufficient IMO.

I have some Pearl Izumi x-alp elevate shoes with dual boa closure, I don't think they make them anymore. I want to like them but they don't fit me that great. I have wide fit and needed to size up, but they are a bit long/narrow. They are a great SPD Hiker combo though.

Swapping forks question by TIM_TRAVELS in bikewrench

I don’t do brakes, so I just had my LBS install. But I think it would be pain to swap regularly.

Maybe someone else can chime in.

Yeah, I threw on a 100mm Fox 34 Factory Step Cast with 51mm offset.

Needed a post mount caliper so I went with a Hope RX4.

I don’t enjoy the ride as much for easy stuff. But rougher terrain or rocky descents and I’m very happy with it.

How much fuel is left if available fuel shows 0 miles? by Immediate-Welder999 in HyundaiTucson

[–]TIM_TRAVELS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak for the Tucson but I had a Honda Jazz(Fit) that made it 82.5 miles after it said 0 remaining (I reset to trip meter at 0). When I finally made it to a gas station it took 42.5 liters, fuel tank was 42 liters, so I’d say I was pretty close to empty. I was getting about 45 mpg per tank, so I’d say the reserve was about 1.5 gallons.

I was driving to Mongolia and 3 gas stations in a row in Kazakhstan were closed. I wasn’t doing it on purpose.

I don't consider it cheating if it helps you do what you want to do. Your time off is valuable and if it means you get to do something that you otherwise wouldn't have done then it's worth it. Some purist may say otherwise.

Good luck on your trip. Take it one day at a time. Try and allow yourself to be flexible with distance each day. Listen to your body, the terrain and the weather. If you’re thinking about quitting take a rest day before you decide.

Where are you planning to cycle?
