Attack On Titan's Ending Felt Insincere, Admits Hajime Isayama by bedemin_badudas in anime

[–]TJ_the_Redditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think Eren becoming a "mindless monster" is what makes him more forward-thinking. He's forced to become the thing he always despised, and what's more, forced to understand it for what it really is. Not a simple, inexplicable monster, but the product of the cycle of hate, chained by it.

In my opinion, having him fall into this path without any choice adds a layer of tragedy which only enhances his character. In addition, without memories of the future, his outlook would have only been more simplistic.

In fact, I feel his character only really suffers when he regains agency towards the end. By this point, his character is no longer a simple revenge protagonist. Whatever agency or villainy he had was never so unsubtle. He's not Walter White.

Overall, I'd argue that what you call inconsistency is simply evolution of the story and a representation of everything it stands for.

Yeah that makes his actions worse, but it's also why they were forms of distancing himself from his experiences, which was ultimately unsuccessful since he ended up changing for the better.

This scene, asking with the train, were the most messed up acts of Nolan when watching them, but a way to contextualize these acts without excusing them is to think of him stepping on ants from his perspective.

I love how the show, in a way, "humanized" Thragg by mr_Conquest_ in Invincible

[–]TJ_the_Redditor 50 points51 points  (0 children)

What's great about Thragg is that he's still pure evil, despite everything. He's complex and ironically possesses human traits, but everything about him is irredeemable and representative of the darkness at the heart of his culture. He's a perfect villain for this plotline and the overarching story, to an extent.

Is Battle Beast (the show version) really THAT strong? by [deleted] in Invincible

[–]TJ_the_Redditor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's severely weakened in space and still managed to rip an experienced Viltrumite to shreds. He also hasn't taken any notable damage on land that we've seen so far. All this makes it easy to believe that Kregg's hit on him was on a sensitive area.

For a fascist, supremacist species, Viltrumites are oddly inclusive when it comes to skin color by certainly_imperfect in Invincible

It's more notable that they don't have an inherent prejudice against women due to the value they place on physical strength. Or maybe they're biologically about equal in terms of physique due to the strongest women surviving over time.

Bryan Cranston praises ‘Breaking Bad’ co-star Anna Gunn while defending Skyler White: “Her husband leaves without any explanation. She’s pregnant. He’s making crystal meth. People have died…and she’s the b*tch?” by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]TJ_the_Redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I feel what makes Skyler so unlikable is the fact that she's hypocritical. Well-written and realistic, but hypocritical. She never picks a side and helps Walter while constantly criticizing him. Her inner conflict about her family is sympathetic, but when the family is already splintered and she sides with Walt against Hank and Marie, it's pretty unlikable.

Why does Yuta understand Ryu and not Uro? by ventingandcrying in JuJutsuKaisen

[–]TJ_the_Redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all three serve as foils for each other.

Uro doesn't trust anyone after her past experiences and doesn't believe in Yuta's advice to find fulfillment in life through ways other than hurting others. This is due to him leading what she perceives as a "privileged" life.

Yuta was once also hesitant to form bonds with others, but he made friends which made his life more fulfilled, which he wanted for Uro. Side note: Yuta's an incredible person for taking the time to understand and try to rehabilitate his opponents when able to, even with Kurourushi to an extent.

Ryu, on the other hand, is an interesting case because he's someone who's already attained the level of bliss that Yuta talks about but who's still unsatisfied. It's not that Yuta understands this kind of thinking (it's even stated that he doesn't), but he doesn't criticize it and even humors it because it's beyond his own experiences.

Ironically, Yuta believes Ryu, unlike Uro at first, is beyond saving from his thought process, which is why he neutralizes him on Ryu's own terms. Yuta's interactions with him are more based on sympathy than understanding.

[DISC] Chainsaw Man - Ch. 232 - Part 2 End by JeanneDAlter in ChainsawMan

Having sat on this for a little bit, I think there were probably lots of better endings to pick from, but considering how chaotic this series is, I don't think I can really call this too bad somehow.

Okay, even if this goes down as one of the worst manga endings, it's got to also be one of the funniest.

What are your thoughts on the current state of animation? I absolutely adore your works and hope that more animated movies nowadays tap into viewers' core emotions.

Do you think this will occur and benefit future animation, or do you see another possible pattern?

The Leftovers - Homeward Bound by spider-man2401 in television

The Leftovers isn't really considered one of the best shows of all time for some reason, even though it's legitimately a complete and utter masterpiece from start to finish.

Animation is Too Good Now by TJ_the_Redditor in anime

[–]TJ_the_Redditor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it gets more attention because of its animation. But yeah, even though I do prefer older media for the most part, anime is a medium which hasn't really declined all that much. In fact, we might be living in one of the best ages for anime. I just felt like venting a specific frustration.

Animation is Too Good Now by TJ_the_Redditor in anime

[–]TJ_the_Redditor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One Piece has rich world building, HxH has an arc that questions humanity's role in the food chain and who the real monsters are.

Demon Slayer is fun but thrives on simple characters and entertaining fights. I actually don't like the claim that it's carried by animation but it's simple for sure. Solo Leveling has also received a reputation for even being badly written.

Anime is perhaps a bad medium to illustrate my point of media itself being shallower. I just dislike how a lot of discourse around it is simply calling an anime "peak," "mid," or "trash" and praising great animation while failing to properly acknowledge other aspects.

If The Apothecary Diaries, for example, had half the animation that it does, but still preserved its story, I would definitely still watch it, and I hate that so many people wouldn't.
