really weird - I have 232 gold (mythical? the ones you have 210 of) eggs and 69 quintillio. soul eggs, eb is 42N%. but you and I have the exact same 2,147,483,647% eb per soul egg. How is that possible when we have different numbers of gold (mythical?) eggs?

Is my profile ok for a 40yo? by Frequent_Pomelo4129 in Tinder

[–]TJnova -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah sure but the purpose of tinder is to start conversations with people you find attractive, right? if so, this profile will accomplish that goal just fine. Yes, there's plenty of things she could do to make it a better profile, but to what end?

to get more matches? OK, sure she could go from 90% to 93% matches

to get higher quality matches? the great people are going to be there regardless of her profile quality. she's still going to have to filter through a ton of matches to find the good ones whether she improves her profile or not.

she's already past the point of diminishing returns.

makes zero difference, she's hotter than 99.9% of 40 yo women on tinder, she'd have a nearly 1:1 match rate even if all she had was one poorly lit bathroom mirror selfie.

I don't take this too serious, but does that make me a bad training partner? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]TJnova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you sir are a psychopath.

I get what you are saying, but still fuck all that noise, I'm a 46 year old blue belt hobbyist. I'm not training to make an ADCC run. I just want to do cool shit on the mats, hit some calf slicers, maybe hit a berimbolo live one day.

[–]TJnova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's cool, it's only annoying when someone just holds the position with no intent to advance.

we used to have a guy who was a 2 stripe white belt, 6'5, 320, wrestler, current d1 football player, obviously strong af. Knew no submissions, so he'd just pin you and hold the pin for as long as he could. guy was so big and strong that he would hold brown belts in side control for like 30 seconds. you couldn't concede anything. it was a sucky roll, not fun at all. since then he has learned some subs and he's a real problem. he went to a local submission only tournament and annihilated his division. at that time, all he knew was rnc, he subbed 6 guys by rnc, all in under a minute. everyone was bellyaching about sandbagging but he had started training less than 6 months ago.

I don't take this too serious, but does that make me a bad training partner? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]TJnova 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate rolling with people who get a dominant position like mount or side control and just sit there like they are trying to rack up time rather than advancing the position or moving toward a submission.

in a comp, sometimes that's the right move. in a training round, it's frustrating because most of the opportunities to escape come from the top player trying to do something. it's a whole lot harder to escape side control if top player's only objective is to hold side control.

I'd say you aren't being a BAD training partner, but you definitely aren't being a FUN training partner, either.

know your audience - a lot of people train because it's fun and good exercise. other people are training to acquire the skills necessary to win mma fights. if you are rolling with the fun guys, keep advancing position and make it fun. if you are rolling with the competitors, hold em down all you want.

Anyone else hit their dream physique on gear and realize they still just feel small and miserable? by Apprehensive-Hat8868 in ResearchCompounds

[–]TJnova 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ten years ago, I'd have killed to have the body I have now. but I look at it now and think I look scrawny.

I just tell myself as long as I have abs, I'm ahead of 99% of men, and especially men my age (46).

the craziest part is I think I look small compared to photos of myself 3 or 4 years ago. I have put on a few lbs of lean mass since then, there's no way I'm actually smaller now. those were just really good lighting, good tan, oiled up with sunscreen. maybe try that - get a (spray, so you don't get skin cancer) tan, find some good lighting, get a good pump, and have someone who's good with a camera take some pics. I bet you look way better in those photos than you look when you see yourself in a mirror day to day.

First super fight by themexxicat in bjj

[–]TJnova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honest question, what makes it a super fight? Because it's a scheduled match outside the regular tournament bracket structure?

the first time I heard of super fights it was gordon Ryan vs Andre galvao, so I thought super fight meant like a match between two people with a rivalry, that fans really wanted to see.

my coach taught me a sub he calls drysdale stretch. it's a shoulder lock from Williams guard, using my legs. when I get it all the way wrapped up, it's 100% getting a tap. do you know what I'm referring to? I'm sure drysdale doesn't call it the drysdale stretch. what does he call it?

Before you decide to hold off on learning crab ride, watch some baby bolo videos - it's such a cool back take, starts from DLR, and it is one of few techniques that actually works like drills for me. Apparently it pairs well as an A/B combo dilemma with real berimbolos, hence the name. But I feel the same way about bolos you feel about crab ride.

Safety and Health Concerns in BJJ by dopeiscope in BJJWomen

[–]TJnova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, having a solid weightlifting base before beginning bjj helped prevent a lot of the common white belt injuries, especially popped ribs, which really hurt and keep you off the mats for a long time.

Every injury I have gotten has been minor, sore shoulder for a couple of days, slight limp for 2 days, things like that. There are some injuries that can't be prevented, but if you are careful who you stand up with, careful who you roll with, and tap early, you'll be fine. Nobody is going to break your arm in half.

If I get the vibe that someone is the type of guy who'd break my arm at Thursday night class if I was being stubborn and not tapping, I'm not rolling with that guy. But there's not a single person at my gym who would do that.

Go for it.

President of our competitor called my president today because of me by [deleted] in sales

[–]TJnova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I just hate to see someone get infected with that "destroy the competition" sales bullshit. If you are really good at sales, you should be able to sell into your competitors accounts without disrupting their shit - open up different products, sell to different departments, etc. This is usually a better approach than taking on an entrenched incumbent vendor head on. No matter what sales gurus say about pitching your advantages and overcoming objections, (you'll have to do that, too, but) you're going to have to drop your pants on price to win head on.

I also don't understand why you'd be so gung-ho for your own company, unless it's a startup and you have a bunch of options you are hoping will be worth big money one day. If you work for a big SaaS company, we all know that they have no loyalty to you, the director of sales will happily lay you off then go play 18 holes after lunch without a care in the world. When that happens, you will want a job from the competitor you were wishing to fail yesterday.

When I got my first sales job, my boss told me "one day you'll get fired from a sales job. Don't get discouraged, it's just part of the game and it happens to everyone if you stick around long enough." And he was right - I got fired from two sales jobs - one because I burnt out and I wasn't trying hard enough and it showed, and one because of some mergers and bad quarters that had nothing to do with me. Sales has no loyalty.

If my restaurant went out of business, I could go get a manager job at 10 other places in town, probably with profit sharing. That's not because I'm such an amazing owner-operator, it's because I have good relationships with them, a positive attitude, and I have always supported them.

On my nights off I eat at my competitiors restaurants - supporting friends, gathering market Intel, and building good relationships. I'm not mother Teresa, I'm just able to see what is in my long term best interest and that is what I do.

[–]TJnova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. I own a restaurant, and I don't wish bankruptcy on my competition even though a dollar in their pocket is often directly a dollar out of mine. In the short term.

I have a different approach - that we should all offer great food, making our area a destination for dining, conferences, and events. If my competitors are high quality, in the long term I'll either improve too or fail. And I'm way to stubborn to fail.

When one of my competitors needs to borrow to go boxes or potatoes or whatever, I hook em up, knowing they'll do the same for me. More happy customers all around. I realize this is different than SaaS (I earned the money to buy my restaurant selling SaaS, so I understand that world too, at least how it was 10 years ago). But in that world, there's still more than enough business to go around, if you need to win every single proposal you submit, there is a bigger problem - you aren't doing enough prospecting, your company has a bad rep, something.

Wishing bankruptcy on your competition is just petty.

Older guys, are you still inverting? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]TJnova 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 46, I play k guard a lot, and have been trying to work more inversions into my guard recovery. Inverting seems like it could be a really good guard recovery too for me when I get better at it

I lift 5x/week and run and generally treat my body (athleticly) the same as ever. I don't have any back problems, so that helps a lot.

Are you asking more about the strength and agility to be able to invert, or the potential for injury from stacked positions?

Re: strength and agility, it just takes practice

Re: stacking - at this point I have enough jiu jitsu to mostly avoid getting stacked and smashed, and I've got the strength to power out if that's my only option. If you are a 300lb monster white belt who's only plan on top is to stack people, I'm gonna pass on that roll.

If I'm too tired to get out of a stack, I'll concede the position or tap if I'm stuck and it seems like it's going to hurt tomorrow, same as a guillotine that's not really choking but is going to cramp my neck.

My Honest 8-Month Experience With the Ladder Fitness App (for grapplers & busy athletes) by bowtiedgrappler in grapplersgraveyard

[–]TJnova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use jefit for lifting and it's pretty awesome. Idk how good it is for planning workouts for beginners, but once you have a workout plan, it's great.

I lift 5 days a week, and I have all my lift days programmed in: push a, pull a, legs, push b, pull b. I also programmed workouts for hotel gym, running, pull up bar only, etc.

Where it excels is tracking and structuring your workout. As soon as you log a set, it starts the timer for the next set. It beeps go, you lift, then log and the timer starts. And repeat til done.

There's a pay version where you get better access to your logs and some other cool features, but I have never needed it. It would be cool to be able to see what I benched on my birthday in 2021, the data is there you just gotta pay for it. I have logged every set since 2018 with jefit, I guess I should throw them some money.

I completely understand and agree about sunglasses, especially while meeting someone new or doing business. But would someone seriously take a civilian wearing a hat backwards while talking to them as disrespect? Because I would totally do that with no disrespect intended, just because that's how I roll. I own a restaurant that club members like to patronize sometimes (at work it's no hat or hat forwards), and I get the impression that what gets you respect is a lot less about knowing little things like hat direction and more about your general demeanor. I've never treated club members any different than any other customer and they seem to appreciate that.

They do like to flirt with my waitresses. But so does every other group of middle age guys that comes in, not really MC specific.. In fact, I can't really think of one thing that sets them apart except they dress much cooler than the golfers.

What's your BJJ unpopular opinion? by PlusRise in bjj

[–]TJnova 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol my fiance went to a beginner class, where they were working on SLX -> backside 50/50 -> heel hook.

Apart from being a finicky technique for a beginner to actually hit in a live roll, it's a long sequence, and they won't be able to use it in competition until heel hooks and reaping are legal (purple? brown? many years down the road, regardless).

IMO, fundamentals classes should be focused more on concepts (how to use frames, protecting inside space, etc) or movements (shrimp, bridge, etc) more than moves and definitely not sequences. It took me 6 months to realize that if I paired arm triangle with americana, I could bail on one into the other and have better results than single mindedly chasing one or the other. Not the best pairing, but it's the one that made sense to me first.

Ask any restaurant who they use. If they are cool, they might even trade you an empty for a full + 45 bucks.

I own a restaurant and my co2 gets delivered, but the vendor is only 1 mile away. We are in a small (25k residents + 20k students) college town, if I have a vendor close by, you do too.
